The Voodoo god from \u2018Chucky,\u2019 explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\" class=\"type:primaryImage\" src=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Tiffany-Seed-of-Chucky.png\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201c<em>Ade due Damballa, <\/em>give me the power I beg of you.\u201d Or at least that\u2019s what <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tag\/chucky\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chucky<\/a><\/strong> says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/every-time-chucky-died-in-the-childs-play-universe-and-how-he-keeps-coming-back\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">He says it a lot<\/a>. Usually, it\u2019s the preface to some supernatural hijinks \u2013 transferring his soul into a Good Guy doll or trying and failing to take over the body of a frightened child actor. The chant has become a regular staple of the franchise. It must have come from somewhere, right?<\/p>\n<p>It did, kind of \u2013 the part about Damballa, especially. Longtime fans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/how-to-watch-all-the-chucky-movies-in-order-every-childs-play-and-chucky-movie-in-chronological-order\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Child\u2019s Play <\/em>movies<\/a> will know that Charles Lee Ray and his on-again, off-again cuddlebug Tiffany get their supernatural powers from voodoo rituals, either thanks to being regular practitioners or having a <em>Voodoo for Dummies <\/em>book nearby. \u201cVoodoo for Dummies.\u201d I just got that. Good stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, the franchise isn\u2019t pulling from a place of solemn reverence \u2013 the third season of <em>Chucky <\/em>sees the Lakeshore Strangler visiting a Voodoo doctor\u2019s office, complete with examination table, stethoscope, and sphygmomanometer. But it does draw inspiration from at least one sliver of real Voodoo beliefs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ade due Damballa! Give me the power, I BEG OF YOU! | Chucky Official\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FrRrURsOcg4?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;%23038;origin=https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Damballa \u2013 which can be spelled in many ways, but we\u2019re sticking with this one \u2013 is about as high in the echelons of Voodoo loa spirits as you\u2019re likely to find. Depending on which variation of the various faiths you follow, he\u2019s either the guy who created the universe or the first spirit made by the guy who did. Creation myths surrounding him describe Damballa as an unfathomably large white serpent who formed the Earth with the curves of his coils and formed the oceans by shedding his skin. There\u2019s an argument to be made that the gathering storm clouds that accumulate whenever Chucky invokes Damballa\u2019s name are a visual reference to the spirit\u2019s association with water. There\u2019s an equally relevant argument that the clouds show up because thunder and lightning are spooky and cool. In either case, they don\u2019t reflect on Damballa\u2019s character within Voodoo beliefs, where he is depicted as ancient, tired, quiet, and generally speaking, pretty chill. He likes eggs and flour if you\u2019re in a giving mood \u2013 pretty far from what you can imagine Chucky getting psyched to sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>All of which makes you wonder: How did Damballa \u2013 an exceptionally laid-back giant snake, as giant snakes go \u2013 become the go-to favorite for the Midwest\u2019s most prolific killer doll? The answer seems deeply rooted in \u201cmaking stuff up.\u201d There&#8217;s no &#8220;Heart of Damballa&#8221; or any mythology surrounding the spirit helping murderers turn into the holiday season&#8217;s hot toy. In a recent interview with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=09uSVmBVGFo\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pop Culture Planet<\/a> <\/em>discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tv\/chucky-season-3-release-window-cast-plot-and-more\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the third season of <em>Chucky<\/em><\/a>, <em>Child\u2019s Play <\/em>mastermind Don Mancini doesn\u2019t talk much about the cultural origins of Chucky\u2019s favorite supernatural deity.
