In fact, he\u2019s starred in five Broadway plays in his career, but his first was a complete embarrassment for him, and it\u2019s partly because of the stage production\u2019s <em>Star Wars<\/em>-themed ad campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Hamill was \u2014 and still is \u2014 so familiar as Luke Skywalker, that at one time it nearly hurt his career, post-<em>Star Wars<\/em>. It\u2019s certainly understandable. <em>The Empire Strikes Back<\/em> actor entered the 1980\u2019s riding high and rich off of the success of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/mark-hamill-finally-unmasks-the-mysterious-stranger-who-offered-to-buy-his-empire-strikes-back-script-in-1978\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highly anticipated <em>Star Wars<\/em> sequel<\/a>. There was one more movie to make to close out the spacey trilogy but that movie \u2014 <em>Return of the Jedi<\/em> \u2014 wouldn\u2019t begin filming until January of 1982. Hamill also had to think about what roles he could land after <em>Jedi<\/em> to keep his career going. <\/p>\n<p>So, despite already being a multi-millionaire thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/the-moment-that-mark-hamill-and-harrison-ford-knew-star-wars-would-be-a-hit\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the success of the galactic saga<\/a>, Hamill remained passionate about his craft, and searched for work and aimed for the big lights of Broadway. To his delight, he landed a major lead role in 1981, and was excited that he could begin to establish himself as more than just the guy from <em>Star Wars<\/em>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mark Hamill plays Amadeus\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H3bDdBj7Psw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em>The Elephant Man<\/em> won the Tony for Best Play in 1979, and was the inspiration for the highly regarded 1980 film of the same name directed by David Lynch, whose work earned him an Academy Award nomination. Coincidentally, because of the success of the film, <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/celebrities\/george-lucas-unintentionally-video-bombed-random-documentary-creating-hilarious-viral-moment\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Lucas<\/a> approached Lynch to direct <em>Return of the Jedi<\/em>, but Lynch was simply uninterested.<\/p>\n<p>Hamill was cast to take over the lead role in the play \u2014 a character named John Merrick, based on a real- life person named Joseph Merrick who had extreme physical deformities. The play details Merrick\u2019s life in 19th century London. <\/p>\n<p>When Hamill landed the role, he was excited, but also was completely unaware that the play\u2019s popularity was beginning to decline. Its problems were likely due in large part to the subject matter. It\u2019s not exactly the type of story that people would normally jump to see again, so customer retention was probably a significant issue. In fact, Hamill was stunned to later learn that the show was consistently playing to a half empty theater. <\/p>\n<p>It soon became widely known that Mark Hamill was now on Broadway, because producers figured it would be a good idea to run a <em>Star Wars<\/em>-themed ad campaign for <em>The Elephant Man<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The ads included \u201cAnd the force continues on Broadway,\u201d written in a style meant to mimic the opening scroll of Star Wars.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"822\" height=\"965\" src=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/4657C6D6-2DBE-44F9-8270-4BF2938362A9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1628849\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/4657C6D6-2DBE-44F9-8270-4BF2938362A9.jpeg 822w, https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/4657C6D6-2DBE-44F9-8270-4BF2938362A9.jpeg?resize=298,350 298w, https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/4657C6D6-2DBE-44F9-8270-4BF2938362A9.jpeg?resize=307,360 307w, https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/4657C6D6-2DBE-44F9-8270-4BF2938362A9.jpeg?resize=150,176 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 822px) 100vw, 822px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">screenshot via newspapers.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hamill had no idea that the show would run such ads. Considering his desire to do something entirely free of <em>Star Wars<\/em> content, and his understanding that it\u2019s not exactly a fun play despite the ads, it was almost nightmarish for the actor, who later explained that he had it written in his contract that he had to approve all ads. Well, he never even saw these, let alone approved them, and now they were out there for the public to see. The producers soon changed out the ads, at Hamill\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, to no one\u2019s surprise \u2014 except maybe the producers \u2014it turned out that the <em>Star Wars<\/em>-themed ads for such a serious and biographical show like <em>The Elephant Man<\/em> was a bad idea. <\/p>\n<p>Hamill\u2019s run on the show was \u2014 unbeknownst to him before signing \u2014 just a desperate attempt to save it. The attempt disastrously failed. Three weeks after Hamill joined the cast, the show closed. It wasn\u2019t exactly a <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/can-you-believe-that-the-day-it-premiered-mark-hamill-claims-george-lucas-asked-him-to-record-dialogue-for-star-wars-on-release-day\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Star Wars<\/em>-esque premiere for Hamill<\/a>. He lasted just 25 performances, and he had moved to New York from California for the show, and was now worried about his future in acting, though he would obviously ultimately have a long and successful career.<\/p>\n<p>When he was interviewed by David Handler a month after the show\u2019s collapse, Hamill opened up about this first Broadway experience. Excluding Luke Skywalker, his most familiar role is as the voice of the Joker in <em>Batman: The Animated Series<\/em>, which earned him critical acclaim in the 1990\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Hamill filmed <em>Return of the Jedi<\/em> in 1982, and watched it own cinemas in the summer of 1983, so few people will feel bad for his Broadway bomb. It\u2019s safe to say that <em>Return of the Jedi<\/em> didn\u2019t run any ads proclaiming \u201cMark Hamill from <em>The Elephant Man<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2><b>Commercials Cooperation
