It’s that time of the year again when critics share their “Best Of” lists.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I like to start with the three “worst” shows I watched over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n

To be clear, these shows have the distinction of at least being watched all the way through. My list of “dropped” shows grows larger every year in our content saturation age.<\/p>\n

Shows Dropped<\/h2>\n

1. “I Hate Suzi Too” (HBO\/Max)<\/strong> \u2014 I liked season one and was looking forward to more, but the \u201cDancing with the Stars\u201d plot didn\u2019t intrigue me. The lead, Billie Piper, reminds me so much of an ex that the first few episodes of every season I\u2019m like, \u201cOh yeah, that\u2019s why I love her.\u201d And then as the show progresses I\u2019m all, \u201cOh yeah that\u2019s why we can\u2019t be together.\u201d And I get that it\u2019s British cringe humor and you\u2019re not supposed to actually like Suzi, but it\u2019s not an enjoyable show to watch.<\/p>\n

2. “Shadow and Bone” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 This show got canned and I\u2019m not surprised. I watched season one and it made me scratch my head about what\u2019s going on over at Netflix. Why cancel superior shows like \u201cTeenage Bounty Hunters\u201d \u201cThe Irregulars\u201d and \u201cLockwood & Co\u201d but greenlight this for a second season? Obviously, numbers play a role, the answer to all your questions is money, but Netflix is going to have to learn to be patient with good shows that need to find their legs. Almost every great show has a rough first season. \u2028Textbook case: \u201cSeinfeld\u201d season one.<\/a><\/p>\n

3. “Vikings: Valhalla” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 I think I watched all but three episodes of the latest season, and I\u2019ll probably come back to it at some point. I just completely lost interest.<\/p>\n

4. “Sky Rojo” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 I have stuck with this Spanish show about three strippers\/escorts who rob the owner of the club and escape because it feels like “Spanish Tarantino” and you can\u2019t help but root for the girls. Still, wow does season three drag. I\u2019ll hopefully get back to this show soon and finish it.<\/p>\n

5. “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 This is an odd show, one you have to be in a specific mood to get into it. It\u2019s like watching paint dry, and that has its place but most nights it’s not worth it.<\/p>\n

6. “Sweet Tooth” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 I liked season one but couldn\u2019t get into season two at all.<\/p>\n

7. “Citadel” (Prime)<\/strong> \u2014 WOW this show was awful and painful to watch and that\u2019s amazing given the talent involved, especially Stanley Tucci, Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra.<\/p>\n

8. “Mrs. Davis” (Peacock)<\/strong> \u2014 This show is like a pancake breakfast. It starts out fun but by the end I was sick of it (an old Mitch Hedberg joke). Star Betty Gilpin is amazing in everything she does and I liked the show’s take on Jesus being loving and alive, but I still don’t need to see anymore of it.<\/p>\n

9. “Dead Ringers” (Prime)<\/strong> \u2014 It’s a dark, moody show about descending into madness in a corrupt world. The theme is perfect for today’s age, and star Rachel Weisz just crushes it as the main character(s). I still found it to be a difficult watch.<\/p>\n

10. “Invisible City” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 This little show from Brazil about old myths living among the \u201cnormals” is similar in theme to the great comic book series \u201cFables.\u201d The show’s first season was fantastic, but it meandered a bit during the first five episodes this season and I got lost along the way; I\u2019d like to get back to it and support this show but it\u2019s a maybe at best.<\/p>\n

11. “Beef” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 This dramedy is going to make a lot of people\u2019s \u201cTop Ten\u201d lists for 2023, and I acknowledge how good it is. Plus, Steven Yeun is one of my favorite actors and Ali Wong is fantastic. My brother said it\u2019s a fascinating look into Asian life in California, and I just couldn\u2019t do it. The material proved just too grim.<\/p>\n

12. “Sexify” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 This show from Poland about college students building a sex app had a fun first season but season two just didn\u2019t hold any interest; I dropped it after the first episode of the second season.<\/p>\n

13. “The Head” (HBO\/Max)<\/strong> \u2014 Season One made my \u201cworst show\u201d list in 2022. Oh, it was awful. I was mildly curious to see if things might improve in season two, but after about ten minutes\u2026 nope.<\/p>\n

14. “The Witcher” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 How could a show be so good in seasons one and two and then just flame out season three?<\/p>\n

15. “Human Resources” (Netflix)<\/strong> \u2014 If I had made it past episode three it would\u2019ve made my list of worst TV shows at #4.<\/p>\n

16. “Irrational” (Peacock)<\/strong> \u2014 I loved the book \u201cPredictably Irrational\u201d by Dan Ariely on which the show is loosely based, but it devolved into a \u201cMurder She Wrote,\u201d cookie-cutter formula in record time.<\/p>\n

The Three Worst Shows of 2023<\/h2>\n

1. “Kaleidoscope” (Netflix)<\/strong> — I can hear the marketing exec in my head, “Okay, this show turned out awful, but what if we cut it up into eight parts and mix and match them? Like every viewer sees the same episodes but in a different order? Do you think that will work?\u201d Sold. And so it happened just like that. It doesn’t matter what order you watched it in, this show stunk. This was, by miles, the worst thing I watched on TV all year.<\/p>\n

2. “Velma” (HBO\/MAX)<\/strong> — I liked the animation, the voice actors and some of the humor, but this show was so deeply nihilistic, narcissistic and preachy it sucked whatever joy you remember from the original “Scooby-Doo!” and send you into deep existential angst and question all the life choices you\u2019ve made up until now.<\/p>\n

3. “Treason” (Netflix)<\/strong> — The primary reason for not liking this show is that nobody behaved like actual spies. Just a cursory reading of John le Carr\u00e9 or even if they caught a James Bond film or two it could’ve given the writers a better understanding of the genre. It feels like this show was intended as a corporate drama, maybe even set in a private club or university, but someone at Netflix said, \u201cHey what if we raise the stakes and make it a spy story?\u201d It all went downhill from there. (Note: “Treason” debuted Dec. 26, 2022)<\/p>\n
