Investments and loans in the highly<br \/>\ncarbon-intensive automotive industry and supply chain are a key<br \/>\npart of their net-zero analyses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >Decarbonization commitments begin with banks and financial<br \/>\ninstitutions making transparent climate disclosures on their<br \/>\ncurrent emissions exposures, setting targets in line with the Paris<br \/>\nAgreement and other international standards, and evaluating<br \/>\nprogress against those goals.<\/p>\n<p >This presents a problem: How to account for automotive<br \/>\nemissions, encompassing both full-lifecycle vehicle emissions and<br \/>\nthe emissions of the supply chain?<\/p>\n<p >Many banks are homing in on their vehicle portfolios, aiming to<br \/>\nevaluate and manage emissions from both the gasoline\/electricity<br \/>\ncarbon footprint (Well to Tank) and combustion (Tank to Wheel)<br \/>\nprocesses, as well as portfolio-level analysis with net-zero goal<br \/>\nsetting.<\/p>\n<p >The goal is to identify the key drivers of emissions, forecast<br \/>\nfuture emissions pathways, and set and work toward ambitious<br \/>\nemissions targets for 2030 and 2050.<\/p>\n<p >However, this journey toward transparency is not without<br \/>\nchallenges. Banks are finding that methodologies for estimating<br \/>\nScope 3 emissions vary widely across the industry, and the<br \/>\nnecessary data is often difficult to access and lacks consistency.<br \/>\nIn contrast with most non-financial corporates, banks typically<br \/>\nhave low Scope 1 (direct operations) and Scope 2 (purchased energy)<br \/>\nemissions; accurate Scope 3 emission analysis is critical to banks&#39;<br \/>\nnet-zero goals.<\/p>\n<p >Properly calculating vehicle emissions requires three key steps:<br \/>\nestimating Well-to-Wheel (vehicle lifetime) emissions, projecting<br \/>\nmanufacturer-level emissions projections, and conducting<br \/>\nportfolio-level analysis.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Estimating Well-to-Wheel (Vehicle<br \/>\nLifetime) Emissions: Well-to-Wheel emissions are typically broken<br \/>\nout into Well-to-Tank (fuel extraction, processing, and<br \/>\ntransportation) emissions and Tank-to-Wheel (combustion) emissions.<br \/>\nCalculating Well-to-Tank emissions includes the upstream CO2<br \/>\nproduction for gasoline (including extraction, refinement, and<br \/>\nshipping) and electric (including mining extraction, charging needs<br \/>\nand grid emissions) vehicles. Next, calculating Tank-to-Wheel<br \/>\nemissions requires projecting vehicle lifetime mileage and vehicle<br \/>\nCO2 production per mile for each vehicle type in the bank&#39;s<br \/>\nportfolio, from ICE to hybrids to battery electric vehicles. This<br \/>\ninformation should be calculated on vehicle Tank-to-wheel emissions<br \/>\nby make, model, and powertrain combinations, accounting for<br \/>\ngeography and usage.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Calculate Manufacturer-Level Emissions<br \/>\nProjections. By using the vehicle-powertrain level well-to-wheel<br \/>\nemissions, the bank should project create manufacturer-level<br \/>\naverage emissions by year of production for each major vehicle<br \/>\nmanufacturer. These projections should extend to 2050 to align with<br \/>\nvarious international net-zero agreements.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Calculate Financed Emissions and Set<br \/>\nNet-Zero Goals.
