That would require an agreement between the league and players&#8217; union, who have already been discussing blade safety for some time.<\/p>\n<p>The decision comes after the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/sportslens.com\/news\/nhl-facing-calls-to-make-neck-guards-mandatory-following-tragic-death-of-adam-johnson\/\">former Pittsburgh Penguins center Adam Johnson<\/a>, who was tragically killed whilst playing for the Nottingham Panthers in the UK&#8217;s top ice hockey division.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, 29, died due to a fatal cut to his neck from a skate worn by the Sheffield Steelers&#8217; Matt Petgrave. It was described as a &#8216;freak accident&#8217; and now, the sport is taking action.<\/p>\n<p>The English Ice Hockey Association has already mandated neck guards from 2024 but it doesn&#8217;t impact the Elite Ice Hockey League, as the league isn&#8217;t under their control.<\/p>\n<p>The EIHL have strongly encouraged players and officials to wear them, however they are not compulsory.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I dislike how close this skate comes to Elias Pettersson\u2019s head\/neck area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jKTZR5L9aD\">pic.twitter.com\/jKTZR5L9aD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \/Cam Robinson\/ (@Hockey_Robinson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Hockey_Robinson\/status\/1729731620150607878?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 29, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The IIHF remains in close contact with its suppliers to ensure they are able to respond to the current high demand,&#8221;<\/em> the organization said.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Until the rule officially goes into effect, the IIHF continues to strongly recommend that neck laceration protectors are worn by all players performing in an IIHF competition.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The NHL&#8217;s vice president of hockey operations Rod Pasma said he addressed GMs last month on cut-proof equipment and players have far more options then they did a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In the neck, we&#8217;re getting there.
