How do you go about playing one of the most popular and successful women in rock and roll history night after night?\u00a0 If you\u2019re portraying the title character in \u201cTINA: The Tina Turner Musical,\u201d you share the spotlight.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Due to the enormous amount of energy, both physically and vocally, expended over the course of nearly three hours and twenty-two songs, two very talented actresses share the role.\u00a0 While taking a break during their recent stop in St. Louis, both Ari Groover and Parris Lewis took a few minutes out of their busy schedule to speak with Media Mikes.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MIKE SMITH:\u00a0 Can you both tell us how you got the role of Tina Turner?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n ARI GROOVER:\u00a0 I was actually fortunate enough to have been in the Broadway company (Ms. Groover played the role of Alline, Tina\u2019s sister and also served as the Understudy for Tina).\u00a0 Because we were still dealing with the experiences of the Pandemic, I went on quite a bit.\u00a0 That allowed me to get in a lot of practice playing Tina Turner.\u00a0 I\u2019m happy to be with the tour doing Tina full time and sharing the journey with Parris, who has a very similar story.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PARRIS LEWIS:\u00a0 My story is very similar to Ari\u2019s.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t start on Broadway but when the show closed and the tour started, I played Alline Bullock and covered Tina.\u00a0 I did that eight times a week and covered Tina whenever one of the \u201cTinas\u201d were out.\u00a0 So with a whirlwind of a year playing both roles, like Ari I had a lot of experience.\u00a0 Although we had two \u201cTinas,\u201d being on tour is hard.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So whenever the young ladies were out, I was on, which was quite often.\u00a0 It afforded me the opportunity to improve so when the tour opened up for year two I was able to, kind of graciously, walk into it.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 I saw Tina Turner many times in concert.\u00a0 Her last tour started here in Kansas City.\u00a0 She always put on such an amazing show.\u00a0 It must be exhausting to play her.\u00a0 Not only the musical numbers but, I\u2019m sure the show also delves into the issues in her personal life.\u00a0 Emotionally, it must be a work out every night.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PL:\u00a0 Oh, yeah.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AG:\u00a0 It surely is.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Is that why there are two of you?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PL:\u00a0 Not necessarily physical exhaustion.\u00a0 More for vocal health.\u00a0 It\u2019s a beast of a show.\u00a0 We sing twenty-two, twenty-three songs in the span of three hours.\u00a0 It takes a toll, the wear and tear, on any artist.\u00a0 I think they decided that it would be best for the role to be shared.\u00a0 These were things that were learned before we got the tour.\u00a0 Touring is harder than sitting still somewhere.\u00a0 You\u2019re constantly moving and lugging yourself.\u00a0 It gives the \u201cTinas\u201d time to recoup, be it energy, physically or vocally.\u00a0 You get that chance to catch your breath.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Ari, since you did do the show on Broadway, did you ever have the opportunity to meet Tina Turner?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AG:\u00a0 No, I didn\u2019t get a chance to meet her because I joined the show a little bit later.\u00a0 Tina came to the show on opening night in October 2019 and I didn\u2019t join the show until the first of the year in 2020.\u00a0 But she did keep in contact with most of her \u201cTinas\u201d around the globe.\u00a0 Anybody that played her\u2026she would send beautiful notes and messages.\u00a0 Though I have not met her, I have MET her.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 What led you both to pursue acting?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AG:\u00a0 Great question.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PL:\u00a0 Yeah, great question.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PL:\u00a0 For me it started through music.\u00a0 I was studying music as a young person, studying voice, whether it was chorale or classical, that was really where my journey began.\u00a0 Even as a young dancer, taking dance classes, you learn that you have to emote.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t just a physical thing.\u00a0 And vocally, you have to be able to tell a story while singing.\u00a0 Through my transition from high school to college I really began to fall in love with seeking more outside of singing.\u00a0 I learned that acting really allowed a person to tell a story and show up.\u00a0 Also, being a young writer, I would write stories and poems and plays of my own.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AG:\u00a0 I\u2019m very happy that my mom was able to surround me with the arts.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t shy away from anything so I was exposed to different mediums as a kid.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always had the \u201cbug.\u201d\u00a0 The funny thing is I really didn\u2019t see myself performing in musical theater.\u00a0 Even when I got to college, I didn\u2019t see myself doing musical theater.\u00a0 I actually went to school for visual arts and illustration because I wanted to do graphic novels or storyboards for animation.\u00a0 That\u2019s where I thought I was going to go.\u00a0 Or I thought I\u2019d be a backup dancer because that was one of the big things in Atlanta\u2026.music videos.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I had in mind.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t really put together that I was good at doing all three things.\u00a0 Though I had done plays and done musicals, I just really didn\u2019t see myself on the great white way!\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Is there a dream role you\u2019d like to play?\u00a0 Something you\u2019d drop everything for if they called and said, \u201cwould you come play this\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PL:\u00a0 Would I drop everything? (laughs).\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 It depends.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just the role.\u00a0 There are so many things that come into play.\u00a0 In theater there are two roles that I\u2019d love to play.\u00a0 One is an older role and the other is more current.\u00a0 One is Persephone in \u201cHadestown.\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AG:\u00a0 Oh my God, you\u2019d be great in that!<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n PL:\u00a0 I love that show.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so beautiful.\u00a0 I really would love to play Persephone.\u00a0 I would also drop things to play Aida in \u201cAida.\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AG:\u00a0 I get asked this question a lot, but I never know the answer.\u00a0 Sometimes I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s something that hasn\u2019t been created yet, or if it\u2019s something that I have to create.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what is the perfect dream role for me.\u00a0 I do think it\u2019s something that
