I may once have been the target of one of those creepy you\u2019re-going-to-die-if chain messages and deliberately ignored it and deleted it from my recollections. I live in the same district \u2014 Lisbon \u2014 where the accident supposedly took place, in the gorgeous Sintra hills I can see from my balcony, usually enshrouded by a misty aura.<\/p>\n<p>So, what has my research revealed to me? Has it struck fear into my heart to never drive through Sintra at night ever again? Well, not really. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-blair-witch-project-but-portuguese-style\"><em>The Blair Witch Project<\/em>, but Portuguese style<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A CURVA aka Teresa Fidalgo Ghost (Original)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o_a70cughDE?start=153&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>I watched the original short film, <em>A Curva<\/em> (<em>The Curve<\/em>), without first watching an interview with the director, and supposed sole survivor of the paranormal event, David Rebord\u00e3o. I immediately recognized the style of film students and aspiring filmmakers, who had clearly seen and been inspired by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/news\/24-years-later-the-blair-witch-project-still-deserves-the-prequel-the-director-dreamed-of\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Blair Witch Project<\/a><\/em>, a groundbreaking horror film that had come out a few years prior. I recognized the tone, choice of words, and upward inflection of amateur actors trying their best. I noticed each deliberate cut and rudimentary glitch-like effect. There was no doubt in my mind this was a short <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/horror-fans-break-down-the-appeal-of-one-of-the-genres-most-iconic-you-had-to-be-there-movies\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">film posing as the real deal<\/a> to gain traction and public attention \u2014 and undeniably successful at that, even though the director wasn&#8217;t anticipating it.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa Fidalgo was a young woman who supposedly died in a car accident in Sintra in 1983. <em>The Curve <\/em>follows T\u00e2nia, Tiago, and David \u2014 the latter who is filming and testing out his new camera \u2014 as they pick up a hitchhiker, Teresa, who is suspiciously standing on the side of the road wearing a plain white dress. Before the movie is abruptly brought to an end, Teresa lifts her arm, pointing, and tells the group to be careful of the curve ahead as that\u2019s where she had the car accident and died. We\u2019re made to think that the ghost then attacks the trio. The film closes with David \u2013 assumedly \u2013 writing about how T\u00e2nia and Tiago died and he was the lone survivor \u2014 such a stroke of luck! Also, one would need to be quite the unfeeling jerk to be capitalizing on their two friends\u2019 deaths if this were true. <\/p>\n<p>But it isn\u2019t. The movie&#8217;s director never actively intended for it to be taken as such, although, he clearly welcomed the fame. <\/p>\n<h2>When fiction, stranger than truth, gains life on the internet<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Design-sem-nome-2023-12-09T141541.205.png\" alt=\"David Rebord\u00e3o\" class=\"wp-image-1636569\" width=\"840\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Design-sem-nome-2023-12-09T141541.205.png 1200w, https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Design-sem-nome-2023-12-09T141541.205.png?resize=564,317 564w, https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Design-sem-nome-2023-12-09T141541.205.png?resize=640,360 640w, https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Design-sem-nome-2023-12-09T141541.205.png?resize=150,84 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Selfie posted by David Rebord\u00e3o on social media (left, via Instagram), Rebord\u00e3o during a TV interview (right and down, via YouTube)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VhadK0gOrA4\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In an interview<\/a>, David Rebord\u00e3o candidly explained that this short film was done to promote another movie he was producing at the time. <\/p>\n<p>He had no clue of the impact his 3-minute-and-a-half-long film would have, much less that it would be felt outside of Portugal. The director talks about <em>The Blair Witch Project<\/em> \u2014 in <em>The Curve,<\/em> the group even discusses witches early on \u2014 and how in the wake of it, he wasn\u2019t expecting people to take his short film as seriously as they did. He was surprised to see it subtitled by netizens in so many languages and even advertised as real in certain countries like, for instance, Mexico. <\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s precisely what Rebord\u00e3o thinks is the most fascinating aspect surrounding the film: How it acquired a universe of its own through the reactions, interactions, and overactive imagination of the netizens. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DavidRebordao\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rebord\u00e3o&#8217;s YouTube channel<\/a> even includes a sequel \u2013 which, the comment section below was quick to point out, features the same people who &#8220;died&#8221; in the first film. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TERESA FIDALGO GHOST STRIKES AGAIN\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uyHLljcEdl0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Watch it, or your cousin&#8217;s elderly pet parrot&#8217;s cousin&#8217;s hamster&#8217;s imaginary friend will perish on the next Feb. 30.
