On the surface, it would appear luxury
\nconsumers have embraced the electrification of the automobile. As a
\npercentage of luxury vehicle retail registrations, electrified
\nvehicles have climbed steadily through the pandemic to a record
\n42.4% in September 2023, according to S&P Global Mobility
\nanalysis of US retail registration data.<\/p>\n

This is up from 15% in September 2019 -\u202fwith
\n“electrified” registrations including battery-electric vehicles,
\nplug-in hybrids, and gas-electric hybrid vehicles.<\/p>\n

However, if Tesla is removed from the equation,
\nthe remaining brands account for a mere 14% of luxury vehicle
\nretail registrations in September – with a split of 9% for BEVs and
\n5% for hybrids. But luxury BEVs have been growing, while hybrid and
\nPHEV share of luxury vehicle registrations have been stable at
\nroughly 4% to 6% for several years.<\/p>\n

On a year-over-year percentage growth basis,
\nBEV growth among non-Tesla brands might appear impressive. And
\nthose brands are indeed taking bites out of Tesla's share among
\nelectric vehicle registrations. But the BEV unit counts remain
\nsmall compared to a legacy OEM luxury portfolio that remains
\ndominated by internal combustion powertrains.<\/p>\n

Tesla has benefitted from being the first mover
\nfor many years. In January 2019, Tesla owned the nascent luxury EV
\nsegment (a meager 326,000 units from a 17 million total US vehicle
\nmarket). The only luxury electrified competition at the time was
\nthe BMW i3, Jaguar i-Pace, and Audi e-tron.<\/p>\n

In subsequent years, even as more competing
\nluxury EVs came to market, Tesla market share continued to grow.
\nTesla's share of total luxury vehicle registrations was 29% as of
\nSeptember 2023, a 19 percentage-point increase over the four-year
\ntime span.<\/p>\n

Prior to that, the non-Tesla luxury EV market
\nbarely made a mark at 1% to 2% share of luxury vehicle
\nregistrations. However, starting in 2022, that share started to
\ngrow with each successive quarter. Current market share for
\nnon-Tesla luxury EVs is 9% in September 2023 – impressive growth,
\nbut still far from crossing the chasm.<\/p>\n

Legacy luxury brands have brought offerings
\nlike the Porsche Taycan; BMW i4 and iX; Mercedes-Benz EQS, EQE, and
\nEQB; the expansion of the Audi e-tron lineup, and Volvo's Recharge
\nline. The new-arrival disruptor brands – Polestar, Lucid, Fisker,
\nand mostly Rivian – have also made an impact among non-Tesla
\nbrands. As more products come to market, the share split between
\nTesla and non-Tesla brands will continue to shift, according to
\nS&amp;P Global Mobility analysis.<\/p>\n

But in looking at overall EV adoption,
\nspecifically at luxury EV households, roughly 90-95% of them also
\nhave an internal combustion vehicle in the garage. This can be a
\ntraditional gas engine, hybrid powertrain, or diesel. So while
\nthere is EV growth, the vast majority of luxury households have not
\nconverted to a purely electric fleet. Rivian households – not Tesla
\nones – are most likely to have another EV in the garage. Yet about
\n80% of Rivian garages also have an ICE vehicle, according to
\nS&amp;P Global Mobility Garage Mates data.<\/p>\n

One electrified area lacking growth is luxury
\nhybrids and PHEVs – an intriguing development as mainstream-brand hybrid
\nsales have been outpacing BEVs<\/a> Back in 2019, Acura, Infiniti,
\nLexus, and Lincoln had hybrid models for sale; today only Lexus
\nsells any meaningful volume of hybrid vehicles while the others
\nhave been discontinued. BMW, Porsche, and Volvo have created a
\npresence in the PHEV market but have seen little growth as they
\nhave prioritized their BEV lineups.<\/p>\n

And while Tesla continues to dominate the BEV
\nmarket, S&amp;P Global Mobility forecast last year<\/a>
\nthat Tesla share would erode as more legacy and disruptor brands
\nentered the market, even if Tesla volumes were to increase. As
\nnon-Tesla luxury brands' commitment to electrification grows, it
\nappears that trend is coming to pass – albeit slowly.<\/p>\n
