The\u00a0Audi<\/a> A7 Avant is being prepared as the successor to the A6 Avant<\/a>, touting a bold redesign and wide-reaching technology updates while\u00a0sticking with combustion power.<\/p>\n

Due on sale in 2025, the estate takes a new name as part of\u00a0a new Audi naming\u00a0strategy that’s\u00a0intended to make\u00a0it\u00a0easier to tell apart ICE cars and EVs: the former have odd numbers,\u00a0the latter even numbers.<\/p>\n

The A6 name will be used next year for an equivalent\u00a0but unrelated E-tron electric\u00a0model based on Audi’s new PPE platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n

An A7 Avant prototype has been spotted testing on roads around Germany with a design reminiscent of\u00a0the smaller\u00a0A5 Avant<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the forthcoming replacement for the A4 Avant.<\/p>\n

At the front, it features slim, redesigned headlights, Audi’s traditional hexagonal radiator grille\u00a0and a streamlined bonnet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The alloy wheels have been redesigned, the door handles are flush with the bodywork and at the rear it gets a bumper-width light bar and reshaped twin exhausts.<\/p>\n

The A7 Avant will arrive alongside a new\u00a0A7 Sportback, which will replace the A6 saloon that\u00a0has been on sale in the UK since 2018.<\/p>\n

The duo\u00a0will serve as rivals to the BMW 5 Series Touring\u00a0and\u00a0Mercedes-Benz E-Class<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen how similar the engine line-up will be to that of today’s car, but\u00a0yellow warning stickers on the spotted prototype’s windows signal that it has some electrical assistance.<\/p>\n

The estate will continue to use the Volkswagen<\/a> Group\u2019s MLB platform, but its rear structure will be modified to accommodate a 14.4kWh lithium ion battery in the PHEV variant, which will offer an electric-only range of around 60 miles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It’s expected to be larger than the\u00a0A6 Avant<\/a>\u00a0in order to accommodate the hybrid system. For reference, the current estate measures 4939mm long, 1886mm wide\u00a0and 1467mm tall.<\/p>\n

Performance editions are likely to follow and will be marked out from the standard A7 by\u00a0more aggressive bumpers, wider air ducts and wider exhausts – together with substantial power boosts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
