It\u2019s faint praise to say this year delivered fewer stinkers than usual.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, 2023 served up a fair share of disappointments, including \u201cIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,\u201d \u201cThe Flash\u201d and \u201cNapoleon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following films were outright duds, squandering their potential and leaving us hungry for the end credits to roll.<\/p>\n

\u2018Saltburn\u2019<\/h2>\n

Emerging filmmaker Emerald Fennell (\u201cPromising Young Woman\u201d) has an eye for lush visuals and socially aware narratives. None of that saves \u201cSaltburn,\u201d a predictable attack on the elites that fumbles everything that matters in a story of its kind.<\/p>\n

\"YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t blame stars Barry Keoghan or Jacob Elordi, sturdy actors who do what they can with the material. The “Banshees of Inisherin” standout plays a middle-class Oxford University student transfixed by a popular peer (Elordi’s Felix).<\/p>\n

The trouble begins when Felix invites his new friend to stay with him for the holidays.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaltburn\u201d struggles to cement the bond between the unlikely chums, but matters get worse when tragedy strikes Felix\u2019s clan.<\/p>\n

None of this makes sense nor does it effectively skewer the upper-upper middle class. It\u2019s a mess, and the psychological portraits get wobblier as the too-long movie plods on.<\/p>\n

Add gratuitous sequences that offer shock and little else, and you\u2019ve got a prestige season candidate that deserves to be ignored.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Blackening<\/a>\u2019<\/h2>\n

Don\u2019t you hate it that black people are always the first ones to die in a horror movie?<\/p>\n

Hollywood\u2019s race issues are no secret, but you can file this problem in the Fake News bin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one of many problems plaguing this punishing stab at comedy.<\/p>\n

\"YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

An annoying gaggle of friends is summoned to a party where the unseen host has a few tricks up his sleeve for them. They\u2019re forced to play a game teeming with racist tropes, meant to highlight cultural inequities with a satirical snap.<\/p>\n

Except the scares never appear and the jokes are, at best, limply assembled. Director Tim Story will never have the word \u201cauteur\u201d near his name, but he\u2019s usually nimble enough to tell a competent story. Just watch his affecting 2002 comedy \u201cBarbershop\u201d or the populist “Ride Along.”<\/p>\n

He\u2019s lost here, unable to draw laughs from an anemic script.<\/p>\n

\u201865\u2019<\/h2>\n

Adam Driver. Dinosaurs. A setting steeped in mystery.<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t that enough for a genre treat, the kind an actor of Driver\u2019s status should make to shake up his IMDB.com page?<\/p>\n

Not when it\u2019s as cumbersome as \u201c65,\u201d a movie that makes \u201cJurassic World: Dominion\u201d look like \u201cCitizen Kane\u201d by comparison.<\/p>\n

\"YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the FX\u2019s fault. The story is a mess, and we\u2019re emotionally detached far too early for \u201c65\u201d to engage us.<\/p>\n

\u2018You People\u2019<\/a><\/h2>\n

Eddie Murphy flashes his old self a time or two in this socially aware comedy. That\u2019s more than we can say for Jonah Hill, who ditched his dude-bro past to punish us with movies like this. He plays a white hip-hop fan who falls for an energetic black designer (Lauren London).<\/p>\n

Cultures clash, and there\u2019s little laughter or insight to be found.<\/p>\n

\"YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

RogerEbert.com\u2019s review<\/a> skewered the film so efficiently it\u2019s worth repeating here:<\/p>\n

“No one talks like this. No one acts like this.”<\/p>\n

\u2018Paint<\/a>\u2019<\/h2>\n

Come back, Bob Ross! But don’t see “Paint” at all costs.<\/p>\n

This \u201ccomedy\u201d follows a Ross-like TV entertainer (Owen Wilson, who can\u2019t save this dreck) as he maneuvers through romantic entanglements and a professional comeuppance.<\/p>\n

\"YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

Wilson’s antihero is modeled after Ross who died in 1995. Why attempt a character assassination of someone who passed decades ago?<\/p>\n

Better question?<\/p>\n

What’s the point of this dreary, laugh-free mess?<\/p>\n

There’s more than a dash of woke infecting the screenplay, but the bottom line is clear. “Paint” asks us to care for a terrible human being without a worthwhile redemption arc to be found.<\/p>\n

These trees aren’t remotely happy. Nor was anyone who paid for this stink bomb.<\/p>\n
