George Clooney\u2019s \u201cThe Boys in the Boat\u201d is a true story featuring a \u201cSaving Private Ryan\u201d-like flashback of an old man informing a young whippersnapper how he was once a member of a world-famous rowing team.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This narrative bookend is such a lame duck that most will forget it exists or, perhaps, will half-expect the old guy\u2019s face to morph into Matt Damon. It\u2019s the first touch here that is well-intentioned but, like most everything else here, doesn\u2019t connect.<\/p>\n

\"YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

Callum Turner stars as Joe Rantz, a University of Washington student in 1936 who becomes a member of his school\u2019s rowing team. Rantz initially joined because he was broke and overheard that the team members were being paid.<\/p>\n

After throwing himself into rigorous training sessions, Rantz is under the careful watch of Al Ulbrickson (Joel Edgerton), his no-nonsense coach who sees his potential but also recognizes the inner turmoil in Rantz.<\/p>\n

Despite being \u201cbased on the incredible true story\u201d (as the poster touts) and a 2013 book by Daniel James Brown, none of this feels real. It always seems like the feel-good sports movie that it is.<\/p>\n

From the glossy cinematography to the busy period art direction, to Edgerton\u2019s motivational speeches, it\u2019s all very clockwork.<\/p>\n

Not helping is that there\u2019s no fire in either Edgerton or Turner\u2019s performance. Rantz has a romance with a Gretchen Moll lookalike (Hadley Robinson<\/a>), and this never amounts to much. While Rantz has a great deal of emotional baggage he must overcome to become a better rower, I never detected any tension.<\/p>\n

Edgerton can be a dynamic actor but he\u2019s restrained here. None of the other actors step up and take hold of this thing.<\/p>\n

What happened to Clooney\u2019s directing career?<\/p>\n

Clooney\u2019s debut behind the camera was the intriguing but not entirely there \u201cConfessions of a Dangerous Mind\u201d (2003) but his follow up, \u201cGood Night and Good Luck\u201d (2005), was a knockout.<\/p>\n

That George Strathairn-led drama, about the career of Edward R. Murrow, was shot in black and white, has a startling use of use of image and sound, and is something of a masterpiece.<\/p>\n

It felt like Clooney was about to become a major filmmaker\u2026then \u201cLeatherheads\u201d (2008), \u201cThe Ides of March\u201d (2011), \u201cThe Monuments Men\u201d (2014) and \u201cSuburbicon<\/a>\u201d (2017) happened.<\/p>\n

I actually liked Clooney\u2019s melancholy sci-fi tale \u201cThe Midnight Sky\u201d (2020), even with its Shyamalan-like twist, and wish he hadn\u2019t followed it up with \u201cThe Tender Bar\u201d (2021), another entry in Clooney\u2019s body of work that is respectable, well made and instantly forgettable.<\/p>\n

Add \u201cThe Boys in the Boat\u201d to that list.<\/p>\n

Whereas \u201cGood Night and Good Luck\u201d (and, to a lesser extent, \u201cThe Midnight Sky\u201d) has distinction and intelligence in its filmmaking, the others greatly fall short.<\/p>\n

Despite being unimpressed with his latest film, I\u2019m a fan of Clooney\u2019s work in front of the camera, particularly \u201cThe Descendants\u201d (2011), \u201cSolaris\u201d (2002), \u201cUp in the Air\u201d (2009) and \u201cO Brother Where Art Thou\u201d (2000).<\/p>\n

His choices as an actor are wildly inconsistent: for every \u201cGravity\u201d (2011) and \u201cBurn After Reading\u201d (2008), there\u2019s a \u201cTicket to Paradise\u201d (2022) and \u201cMoney Monster\u201d (2016) around the corner.<\/p>\n

It figures that the man who will be fondly remembered for embodying Danny Ocean and the Fantastic Mr. Fox was also, without argument, the most infamous Batman in cinema. What I\u2019m saying is that, while I\u2019m a fan, Clooney\u2019s film choices remain inconsistent and his latest is further proof of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Boys in the Boat\u201d is exactly the kind of movie I will recommend to my mom and in-laws for Christmas. Why? It\u2019s so Hallmark\/Lifetime channel-ready, so thoroughly inoffensive, such prepackaged comfort food, it will appeal to anyone who found \u201cCool Runnings\u201d too gritty (though even that movie has an unpredictable ending and scenes and performances I still remember).<\/p>\n

At least Clooney found a way to make the rowing scenes visually interesting, even suspenseful, but you can\u2019t make an entire movie out of that. The rest is dealing with the men in school, contemplating their future, talking in mild tones about women, their careers, and their futures.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve seen all this before, done far better. This movie is toothless. Call it Dead Boats Society.<\/p>\n

One and a half stars<\/strong><\/p>\n
