Over that time he&#8217;s seen countless adventures in comic books, video games and on television, but it&#8217;s the silver screen that&#8217;s cemented him as a bona fide pop culture icon. <\/p>\n<p>So, without further ado, let&#8217;s list these cinematic caped crusaders!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-lewis-wilson\">Lewis Wilson<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batman 1943 ORIGINAL Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kzEpyKuIhkQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Gotham\u2019s Dark Knight fights crime in a sweatsuit and a balaclava. The evil Asian villain is played by a white guy who would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/james-hong-the-new-adventures-of-charlie-chan-fired-1850193936\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">later get Hollywood legend James Hong fired<\/a> from a movie for being too Asian. The guys doing the titles aren\u2019t sure if \u201cBatman\u201d is one word or two.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All this and more can be found in 1943\u2019s <em>Batman, <\/em>the first of Bruce Wayne\u2019s big-screen, live-action adventures. Our first Batman came to us via Lewis Wilson, a 23-year-old working actor whose career never peaked higher than the \u201cplayed the first Batman\u201d footnote. Featuring high melodrama and exactly the kind of racism that you\u2019re probably imagining, <em>Batman <\/em>was released in 15 chapters between July and October of 1943. At 260 minutes in length it <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/the-batman-director-defends-the-3-hour-running-time\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still feels shorter than <em>The Batman<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Robert Lowery<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1949 Batman Serial Intro\/Introduction\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x74B21OPSBI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In 1949, Batman returned to theaters in <em>Batman and Robin, <\/em>another 15-part serial. Produced by Sam Katzman \u2013 think World War II-era <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/the-must-watch-movies-of-influential-filmmaker-roger-corman\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roger Corman<\/a> \u2013 it was cheap, messy, poorly thought out, but kinda fun. This time, 36-year-old Robert Lowery stepped into the lumpy bat suit, going toe-to-toe with an evil inventor called the Wizard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Adam West<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batman Movie (1966)  - trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xuYRyef-xf4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There\u2019s not much in the world that\u2019s more fun than the <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/adam-west-follows-in-the-unsettling-footsteps-of-the-flash-to-make-another-cameo-appearance-from-beyond-the-grave\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adam West<\/a> <em>Batman <\/em>series. Chaotically campy and played with a straight-faced earnestness, it\u2019s joyfully goofy. For this iteration\u2019s theatrical film, the CBS <em>Batman <\/em>show\u2019s main cast returned, along with a good chunk of the rogues&#8217; gallery. Frank Gorshin\u2019s Riddler, Burgess Merideth\u2019s Penguin, and Cesar Romero\u2019s Joker all turned up to chew scenery, while an otherwise occupied Julie Newmar was replaced by Lee Meriwether. The 1966 motion picture remains worth watching nearly 60 years later, and will have you wondering why more evil plans don\u2019t end in the arms of the Penguin\u2019s exploding octopus.<\/p>\n<h2>Michael Keaton<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batman (1989) Official Trailer #1 - Tim Burton Superhero Movie\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dgC9Q0uhX70?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A full five decades after the Batman was introduced in the pages of Detective Comics, it was time for fans to put away childish things, focusing on a version of their favorite superhero who was just for big boys. Following Frank Miller\u2019s lead, Tim Burton tried to leave the goofiness of \u201860s-era Batman behind him, giving audiences the first full-throated interpretation of the character in a high-budget movie. <\/p>\n<p>He chose Michael Keaton for the part. Fans were not happy, reportedly sending tens of thousands of angry letters to Warner Bros \u2013 an almost quaint amount of complaining by today\u2019s standards, but that\u2019s what things were like back when you had to pay postage every time you wanted to send an angry tweet.<\/p>\n<p>Keaton&#8217;s debut was a monster hit, but he bowed out after 1992&#8217;s <em>Batman Returns <\/em>when the studio decided to move in a less emotionally traumatizing direction and canned Burton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Val Kilmer<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batman Forever (1995) Official Trailer - Val Kilmer, Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones Superhero Movie HD\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ROLvjRB4E_Q?start=44&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Among the briefest tenures in Batman movie history, Val Kilmer only defended the streets of Gotham once, during Joel Schumacher\u2019s <em>Batman Forever <\/em>in 1995. He would go on to give many reasons for leaving the franchise, as would other people involved in the project. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/batman-star-val-kilmer-explains-left-role-movie\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kilmer said<\/a> that he felt unappreciated in the role, and that he couldn\u2019t connect with a character who punches all of his problems away. Schumacher said that Kilmer got into a shoving match with him on set.\u00a0Bad vibes all round. Oh well, next time Schumacher will nail it&#8230; right?<\/p>\n<h2>George Clooney<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batman &amp; Robin (1997) Official Trailer #1 - George Clooney Movie HD\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4RBXypX4qWI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The only Batman actor ever to offer to personally refund anyone that saw his movie in theaters, George Clooney took over the role for 1997\u2019s <em>Batman and Robin, <\/em>a film that\u2019s aged like a fine wine someone opened a glowstick into. Still hot off of the success of <em>ER, <\/em>Clooney didn\u2019t have much to do in the flick. He mostly stood, stiffly, not turning his head very much. He&#8217;s nobody\u2019s favorite Batman. <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/celebrities\/george-clooney-thinks-he-knows-who-the-best-batman-is\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Not even his own<\/a>. Not even Brad Pitt\u2019s, probably.<\/p>\n<h2>Christian Bale&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batman Begins - Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qHhHIbNuok8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>With another decade of goofiness in the rearview, Christopher Nolan pulled a hard reset on Batman, bringing realism (relative to mid-2000s superhero movies) to the franchise. For his series, he\u2019d need an intense, dramatically charged actor \u2013 the kind that could sell even the weirdest lines of dialogue from <em>American Psycho, <\/em>or <em>Newsies, <\/em>or whatever.<\/p>\n<p>Christian Bale became a generation\u2019s favorite Batman in 2005\u2019s <em>Batman Begins, <\/em>finally presenting the character as scarred, traumatized, and obsessed with justice to an unhealthy degree. His interpretation proved so popular, that it contributed to WB\u2019s decision to stay out of the MCU-adjacent shared universe model of filmmaking until Bale\u2019s solo <em>Dark Knight <\/em>story was over.<\/p>\n<h2>Ben Affleck<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Official Teaser Trailer [HD]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IwfUnkBfdZ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nerds of a certain age will never forget where they were the day that DC announced that Ben Affleck would be their shared universe\u2019s new Batman. Some of us went \u201cew.\u201d Others went \u201chuh.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If Christian Bale\u2019s Batman poked moodily at his oatmeal, Affleck\u2019s threw his bowl across the room and screamed that he wanted Apple Jacks. He was a cranky, angry Batman, branding the criminals that he took down with pictures of his favorite animal. He wasn\u2019t for everybody. Heck, by the end, he wasn\u2019t even for Affleck, who was openly exhausted with the role by the time <em>The Flash <\/em>came out in 2022.<\/p>\n<h2>Robert Pattinson<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THE BATMAN \u2013 Main Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mqqft2x_Aa4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Taking a step back from trying to make their own MCU, DC released <em>The Batman <\/em>in 2022, a sort of spiritual successor to the Batman of the Nolan\/Bale era. Divorced of shared universe malarkey, he was a young, humorless Batman, all about punching, gravelly voices, and moody Nirvana covers. <\/p>\n<p>Time being a flat circle, DC elected to keep this Batman off in his own universe being moody while they make plans for a different Batman to do group projects with. It was like 2005 through 2012 all over again.<\/p>\n<h2>Michael Keaton again<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THE FLASH (2023) Trailer #2 [HD] DC Michael Keaton, Ezra Miller\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5I6l93ZNXMk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nostalgia sells, right? Michael Keaton returned to the cape and cowl for <em>The Flash, <\/em>playing <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/comicbooks\/is-michael-keatons-batman-in-the-flash-the-same-character-as-the-tim-burton-films\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kind-of-sort-of the same Batman<\/a> that he\u2019d played in <em>Batman <\/em>and <em>Batman Returns. <\/em>Early reports had his Bruce Wayne taking over as the DCEU\u2019s Nick Fury analogue, and Keaton had already shot scenes for the studio\u2019s <em>Batgirl <\/em>film before it was historically and unceremoniously scrapped. <em>The Flash<\/em> turned out to be an embarrassing disaster. Let&#8217;s just hope Keaton got a good payday.<\/p>\n<p>The further adventures of \u201880s Bruce Wayne are doomed to remain unfilmed, but you can read about them in the pages of the comic book <em>Batman \u201889.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>George Clooney again<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"George Clooney as Batman Cameo Scene | THE FLASH (HD)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PYHovwhDizs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>For one glorious, perfect moment in the final frames of 2023\u2019s <em>The Flash, <\/em>everything made perfect sense. The universe was scrambled by time travel. Everything was weird. Zack Snyder\u2019s obsession with having heroes drop F-bombs finally, just for a second, fit perfectly into the events that occurred on screen. George Clooney\u2019s Batman was back. What the f\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Shot as a bit on the recommendation of new studio co-head James Gunn and representing the troubled picture\u2019s third or fourth ending, <em>The Flash<\/em>\u2019s final scene sees George Clooney brought back to screens. Canon-wise, it\u2019s unlikely to mean anything moving forward, but darned if it wasn\u2019t an enormous swing by a company that knew that it was about to start over from scratch
