\n It was a busy year in the world of motoring, with an incredible variety of machines<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Photographers Max Edleston and Jack Harrison pick out their favourite photos from the past year<\/p>\n

\n

The skill of Autocar’s superb photographers, Max Edleston and Jack Harrison, helps to bring our plain-black-and-white words to life.<\/p>\n

Here, the duo picks out their favourite photos from the past year in the wonderful \u2013 and often weird \u2013 world of everything automotive.<\/p>\n

\"Ford<\/p>\n

Max has fond memories of our Ford Ranger Raptor<\/a> and Jeep Wrangler<\/a> face-off. \u201cI\u2019ve never been covered in more mud in my life,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n

\"Garage24<\/p>\n

More glamorously, Jack captured Nascar\u2019s \u2018Garage 56\u2019 Le Mans entry at this year\u2019s Goodwood Festival of Speed<\/a>. \u201cIt was great to see Jenson Button hop behind the wheel and do the biggest burnouts I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\"Ferrari<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a hard life snapping pictures of a Ferrari Purosangue<\/a> in northern Italy, isn\u2019t it, Max? Taking advantage of the beautiful landscape, Max used his drone to create this particular one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Toyota<\/p>\n

Back down to earth, or rather a wet Wales, Jack borrowed our long-term Toyota GR. Supra<\/a> for a weekend and reckons this shot sums it up perfectly: \u201cA red missile cutting through the dark clouds over Snowdonia.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Volkswagen<\/p>\n

Or how about Cornwall in January with a Volkswagen ID Buzz<\/a>? \u201cIt was a very cold winter\u2019s morning on the south-west coast,\u201d says Max. \u201cNot the most enjoyable experience, but the chill was worth it for this shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"GSR\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fast forward to summer, Max also captured this off-road buggy at Goodwood: \u201cI think the photo shows perfectly the insane mix of skill and speed needed to get this jump.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Unimog<\/p>\n

This shoot was a \u201cdream come true\u201d, says Jack, who was first impressed by a Unimog<\/a> in Regent\u2019s Park when he was 10: \u201cThis go-anywhere vehicle is much faster than you think, and this image captures that pretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Garage24<\/p>\n

A second entry here for the Nascar Chevrolet Camaro<\/a> ZL1, this time at Le Mans. Max says: \u201cThere was so much hype around this entry, it would have been mad not to have taken the opportunity to get a big image of the standout team, car and garage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Kia<\/p>\n

Jack was particularly happy with the Kia Picanto<\/a> snaps, having not shot many road trips before: \u201cThe tiny Picanto was dwarfed by Ireland\u2019s incredible landscape. Shame the car wasn\u2019t a brighter colour\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Jeep<\/p>\n

There\u2019s always a story behind each shot, as Max explains: \u201cThe stress of getting the Jeep Avenger<\/a> up a mountain to an electric charger with 0% range left was an interesting experience. Once we were sorted and onto the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the fog had set in, and driving through the mountain tunnel in dead silence was a moment to savour.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Lamborghini<\/p>\n

Jack reckons it\u2019s almost impossible to take a bad photo of the Lamborghini Hurac\u00e1n Sterrato<\/a>: \u201cIts low profile looks utterly extreme away from the Tarmac.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Triumph<\/p>\n

On the Triumph TR4, Jack says: \u201cSometimes you stumble into nice shots \u2013 and this was one of them. The race-prepped TR4 caught my attention as soon as I entered Classic Performance Engineering\u2019s Bicester workshop. The building itself seemed to draw your eye to the beautiful 1960s coup\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n

Autocar’s best renderings of 2023<\/h2>\n

Our rendering superhero is Ben Summerell-Youde, whose Clark Kent-like day job as Autocar\u2019s picture editor helps to keep his eye in for the latest automotive styling trends. His three favourite designs for us this year are from three iconic brands: Alfa Romeo<\/a>, Alpine<\/a> and Ferrari<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Alfa<\/p>\n

On the Alfa, he says: \u201cIt was great fun trying to recreate the overall shape and boxy body mass of the original SZ. I particularly like the short wheelbase, stocky rear end and all-black pillars and roof.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Alpine<\/p>\n

He reckons the Alpine A310<\/a> was \u201cdesperately crying out for an upto-date redesign to complement the retro curvy A110. The flatter surfacing and angular DLO [\u2018daylight opening\u2019 \u2013 that\u2019s design-speak for \u2018windows\u2019] cutting into the C-pillar sets it apart from the A110, as it did when it was launched in the 1970s.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Ferrari<\/p>\n

On the Ferrari 812 successor<\/a>, Ben says he loved the softer classical direction of the Roma: \u201cI wanted to push that style further into a more brutal and attention-grabbing flagship, while trying to remain elegant.<\/p>\n

Ben’s favourite concepts of 2023<\/h2>\n

\"Audi<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Audi<\/a> apprentices designed and built this playful recreation of the NSU Prinz Coup\u00e9. The headlights and tail-lights are simply styled but make such a big difference and really modernise the design. I love the raised bootlid-cum-spoiler, too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"BMW<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Finally, some fresh thinking from BMW<\/a>, with a new grille design that\u2019s shallow and wide instead of tall and aesthetically challenged (yes, iX range, I\u2019m looking at you). Smart lower glasshouse design and thin pillars are reminiscent of the airy E30-generation 3 Series<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Mercedes<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>A truly creative creation that harks back to a golden era of concept cars from the 1970s, and especially so in this wonderful orange hue. Its one-bow design evokes the past but is clearly heading towards the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
