Kinda weird that there are two motorsports and one Soda Masahito series this season, and his isn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n

MF Ghost – 01<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\"\"<\/a>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\n\"\"<\/a>
\n\"MF<\/a>
\n\"\"<\/a>

\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

First off, I know basically nothing about Initial D<\/em>, which MF Ghost<\/em> is seemingly an indirect sequel to. \u00a0So for me this is basically an original series. \u00a0It focuses on a near future where internal combustion cars are extinct on the road, and survive only in a kind of snow globe world of exotic car racing.<\/p>\n

I have a couple of observations about this premiere, which was basically OK (TBH the best thing about it was Miki Shinichirou as the narrator) but weird. \u00a0First off, the character designs looked really ugly to me – retro (on purpose I suppose) but not in a good way. \u00a0Second, holy product placement, Batman. \u00a0Sukiya<\/a> clearly wrote the biggest check but it was loaded. That bit about Sukiya being a classic Japanese meal was pretty LOL, I admit (hey, it is the best of the big three).<\/p>\n

Mostly, though, the \u201cold-fashioned\u201d attitudes here were pretty striking. \u00a0The way the girls acted was hilariously 1970s, and those \u201cAngel\u201d uniforms – I mean, a 16 year-old acting as a mascot literally wearing panties?<\/a> \u00a0That extends to the \u201cwow, Japan is so great\u201d stuff. \u00a0That got so over the top that I started to wonder if it was self-parody. \u00a0\u201cWow, Japanese food is amazing. \u00a0Wow, Japanese is so hard, I can\u2019t believe an ignorant hafu<\/em> can speak it. \u00a0Naturally, Japan has the racing circuit the whole world is obsessed with and their cars are the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

All that was a lot to take, but on the whole the episode itself wasn\u2019t bad. \u00a0It did make me LOL a few times, intentionally or not. \u00a0The racing side has potential to be modestly interesting. \u00a0I don\u2019t see much chance I blog this show (I have higher hopes for Overtake!<\/em>) but I\u2019ll give it another week or two.<\/p>\n

Megami no Daigo – 01<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m a bit fan of Soda Masahito\u2019s Capeta<\/em>, which I consider to be among the ten best sports manga (and anime, probably) ever. \u00a0So I had a certain amount of hope for this sequel to his 1995 manga, which also got an anime adaptation back in the day. \u00a0But to be honest, the premiere left me pretty cold.<\/p>\n

Megami no Daigo<\/em> shares the big name narrator trait with MF Ghost<\/em> (this time it\u2019s Tsuda Kenjirou). \u00a0But let\u2019s be honest, \u201cfirefighters are really brave and heroic\u201d<\/a> is pretty low-hanging fruit. \u00a0And that\u2019s all I really got out of this – a lot of fawning over how great these guys (and the occasional girls) are.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine, but not especially entertaining. \u00a0If there\u2019s more to it (and I don\u2019t have any exposure to the original series to compare it against) I didn\u2019t get it out of the first episode. \u00a0The leash here is going to be a very short one.<\/p>\n

Ragna Crimson – 01<\/strong><\/p>\n

TBH I only got about five minutes (generously) in before I bailed. \u00a0Ragna Crimson<\/em> screams \u201cgeneric modern fantasy\u201d from ever atom, and Leo was incredibly insufferable literally from the first minute. \u00a0Nope, not the target audience for this one.<\/p>\n
