Skin tone vs. undertone<\/h2>\n
Most people can generally tell whether they\u2019ve got a fair, medium or dark skin tone, but when it comes to finding the hair colours that are the most flattering for you, it can get complicated. There\u2019s tone \u2013 the surface colour of the skin \u2013 and then there\u2019s undertone.<\/p>\n
Undertone is the subtle hue beneath the surface of your skin and this is the key to finding out your ideal colour palette (FYI, it also includes makeup, clothing and jewellery).<\/p>\n
Whilst the surface colour of our skin can change, skin undertone never changes, even with a tan! So, it\u2019s a much better way to determine which shades really suit your mane.<\/p>\n
How to determine your skin undertone<\/h2>\n
There are three undertone colours: warm, cool, and neutral:
\n\u2022 If you\u2019ve got warm undertones, your skin will appear peachy, yellow or golden
\n\u2022 Cool skin undertones have a blue, pink or red tinge
\n\u2022 Neutral skin undertones are usually balanced between blue and yellow, and are generally closer in appearance to the skin\u2019s surface tone (neutral gals are lucky enough to suit a wide range of hues and shades)<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not always easy to decipher your skin undertone, so you\u2019ll probably have to do a few things to work it out.<\/p>\n
1 – Look at your veins<\/h3>\n
An easy way to determine your skin\u2019s undertone is by checking the colour of the veins on the underside of your wrist (in natural light). If they appear blue or purple, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ve got cool undertones, whilst greenish veins indicate a warm undertone.<\/p>\n
If your veins aren\u2019t that clear and seem to match the colour of your skin, then you\u2019ve probably got a neutral undertone.<\/p>\n
2 – Think about how your skin reacts to the sun<\/h3>\n
How does your skin fare after being in the sun? Do you easily burn, or do you tan? The answer can help you determine your skin\u2019s undertone. But remember, you should always layer up the suncream, whether you burn or not!<\/p>\n
If you turn pink or burn easily, it means you\u2019ve got less melanin in your skin, which can point towards having a cool undertone. If you tan easily or rarely burn, you\u2019re probably warm or neutral-toned.<\/p>\n
3 – It\u2019s all in the eyes<\/h3>\n
People with cool skin undertones tend to have blue, green, pale brown or grey eyes, and naturally blonde, brown or black hair with ash tones.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019ve got brown, amber or hazel eyes, and strawberry blonde, auburn, brown or black hair with red or gold tints, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019re warm-toned.<\/p>\n
Those with neutral skin undertones typically have hair and eyes that are a mix between warm and cool; you might have blue-green eyes with hints of copper, or eyes that can appear slightly cooler or warmer depending on what you\u2019re wearing.<\/p>\n
4 – Which colour palette do you suit?<\/h3>\n
Different colours work on different people, and the main reason for this goes back to their skin undertone. If your go-to clothes are blue, purple, grey or white, then it\u2019s likely your skin has a cool undertone. Earthy or autumnal colours like yellow, orange, red, olive green and cream or off-white look best on those with warm skin tones.<\/p>\n
5 – Consider your jewellery collection<\/h3>\n
Whether it\u2019s blingy or understated, your jewellery collection can give you an indication of your skin undertone.<\/p>\n
Silver, platinum and rose-gold jewellery looks especially good against skin with cool undertones, whereas gold jewellery usually flatters warm undertones. If your jewellery collection is a mix of metals, then (you guessed it), you\u2019re a neutral.<\/p>\n

While your skin tone plays a part when it comes to finding the hair colour that suits you, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to your tresses. There aren\u2019t any hair colours that you need to be wary of per se; instead, it\u2019s about choosing the right shade that\u2019s going to flatter your skin tone, accentuate your natural features, and give your \u2018do a new lease of life.<\/p>\n
