Which ones pulled on our heartstrings?<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Each year a string of cars we can briefly call &#8216;our own&#8217; arrive at Autocar towers, ready to be tested over a set of months and subjected to the rigour of a journalist&#8217;s everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>In getting getting to live with them as if they were ours,\u00a0we can dig into the less-obvious high-points and gritty flaws that only raise their heads after an extensive period of testing.<\/p>\n<p>Some of our cars provide a much more memorable experience than others. Without further ado (and deliberation), then, here are our picks of Autocar&#8217;s 2023\u00a0fleet.<\/p>\n<h2>The long-distance award<\/h2>\n<p><em>For the car we\u2019d most want to take on a very long journey<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner:<\/strong> Bentley Flying Spur<\/p>\n<p><strong>Runner up:<\/strong> Toyota GR Supra<\/p>\n<p>No need for a play-off or penalties here: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/bentley\/flying-spur-hybrid\/long-term-reviews\/bentley-flying-spur-hybrid-s-2023-long-term\">Bentley Flying Spur<\/a> was just a single vote away from having more nominations than every other car on this year\u2019s fleet put together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Steve Cropley looked after Crewe\u2019s finest and \u2013 unsurprisingly \u2013 \u201cenjoyed every mile\u201d. Chief sub-editor Kris Culmer enjoyed reading about Cropley enjoying it so much that he voted for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/bentley\">Bentley<\/a> without ever having driven it\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bentley Flying Spur driving\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/bentley_flying_spur_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=GyfeLbon\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Deputy road test ed Richard Lane marvelled at \u201cthe magical combination of connection to the machine but isolation from the road\u201d, while Mark Tisshaw (that\u2019s me, by the way) said \u201cnobody does seats like Bentley\u201d while pondering the grammatical protocol for quoting oneself in the third person.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lane\u2019s road test desk colleague Illya Verpraet, always the iconoclast, was one to put forward the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/toyota\/supra\/long-term-reviews\/toyota-gr-supra-manual-2023-long-term-test\">Toyota GR Supra<\/a> \u201cfor its excellent driving position, nice seats and good old \u2018dumb\u2019 cruise control that doesn\u2019t have a mind of its own and which helps to make this a very relaxing long-distance car\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised not to see more votes for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/alpina\/d3-s\/long-term-reviews\/alpina-d3-s-2023-long-term-test\">Alpina D3 S<\/a>, although in voting for it, Cropley\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/podcasts\/my-week-in-cars\">My Week In Cars podcast<\/a> co-host (new episodes every Wednesday from your favourite podcast provider)\u00a0Matt Prior perhaps explained why: \u201cThe Alpina D3 S, so long as it was on the continent so I didn\u2019t have to stress about potholes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;I&#8217;d buy it&#8217; award<\/h2>\n<p><em>For the car we\u2019d be most likely to spend our own money on<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Alpina D3\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/alpina_d3_s_touring_front_three_quarter_static.jpg?itok=TF4PP4Mx\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Alpina D3 S<\/p>\n<p><strong>Runner up: <\/strong>Range Rover PHEV<\/p>\n<p>Less than 5% of cars sold in the UK this year were diesel-powered.<\/p>\n<p>That fact is far more a reflection of paucity of options in today\u2019s market since a certain German manufacturer did you know what than it is the underlying technical quality of these machines. But when done right, diesel can be so truly compelling. Presenting exhibit A: the Alpina D3 S.<\/p>\n<p>Special contributor Al Clements, who you would hope, as editor-in-chief of Classic &#038; Sports Car magazine, would be able to spot a model with enduring appeal, was one of those to put forward the D3 S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever mind limiting my choice to the \u2018Our Cars\u2019 fleet,\u201d he said. \u201cI can think of few cars that I\u2019d rather live with every day given a completely free choice. Surely there is no other car that will perform like this \u2013 both in a straight line and cross-country \u2013 while returning 40-50mpg and carrying my dogs and kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several cars got a mention in this category, including Toyota\u2019s Supra and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/toyota\/long-term-reviews\/toyota-land-cruiser-2023-long-term-test\">Toyota Land Cruiser<\/a> and even the Ford Focus (Matt Saunders: \u201cComfy, versatile, affordable and real-world efficient \u2013 and a Ford Focus, so inherently worth preserving in aspic if at possible\u201d) but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/land-rover\/range-rover\/long-term-reviews\/range-rover-plug-hybrid-2023-long-term-test\">Range Rover PHEV<\/a> ran the Alpina closest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis model\u2019s superb styling and luxury, plus its truly surprising electric range, make it a very appealing choice,\u201d said Steve Cropley. \u201cWould play well with the other half, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;winner takes it all&#8217; award<\/h2>\n<p><em>For the most practical car for any task to which it could reasonably put<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Toyota Land Cruiser driving through big puddle\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/toyota_land_cruiser_front.jpg?itok=7Agah72U\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Toyota Land Cruiser<\/p>\n<p><strong>Runner up:<\/strong> Volkswagen Multivan<\/p>\n<p>Only two cars were ever in the running here, even if the Supra once again, remarkably, found itself not having to return its deposit in a category focused on practicality.<\/p>\n<p>Culmer, the Land Cruiser\u2019s keeper, gets to give the acceptance speech for the legendary 4&#215;4: \u201cIt had space for seven adults, the boot was enormous enough for my mountain bike with both wheels attached and it even had a toolkit recess in its side-hinged boot door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Felix Page also chose the big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/toyota\">Toyota<\/a> despite lamenting that he \u201cdidn\u2019t have more outlandish requirements for it than moving a piano across London\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Prior put forward the kind of case for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/volkswagen\/multivan\">Volkswagen\u00a0Multivan<\/a> that would have swayed many a floating voter: \u201cIt moved photographer Max\u2019s band and the contents of my friends\u2019 house, it\u2019s a podcast studio, I used it as an office outside the hospital my son was in, and \u2019cos it\u2019s a PHEV you can go for chips at the seaside in winter and the battery keeps the cabin warm while you take in the view. You could camp in it, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;yeah, but apart from that&#8217; award<\/h2>\n<p><em>For the undeniably flawed car that charmed us anyhow<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kia Niro EV charging\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/kia_niro_ev_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=jP5slx_4\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winners: Kia Niro EV, Renault Megane, Volvo XC40 Recharge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What do these compact family electric cars all have in common? No heat pump. As our EV lexicon grows, so does our knowledge that a heat pump for the system is essential in order to enjoy an electric car in colder weather.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/renault\/megane-e-tech-electric\/long-term-reviews\/renault-megane-e-tech-electric-2023-long\">M\u00e9gane E-Tech Electric<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/kia\/niro-ev\/long-term-reviews\/kia-niro-ev-2023-long-term-test\">Kia Niro<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/volvo\/xc40\/long-term-reviews\/volvo-xc40-recharge-2023-long-term-test\"> Volvo XC40 <\/a>were all excellent all-round machines that could ultimately never shake the asterisk next to their names.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Renault Megane cornering\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/renault_megane_e_tech_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=ugq4NL_z\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The M\u00e9gane is now offered with a heat pump in the UK after early cars didn\u2019t have one, while on the Niro it\u2019s an option \u2013 and one you must tick. Our XC40 didn\u2019t have a heat pump either (although one is included in some trim levels), which acting mag ed James Attwood noted \u201creally affected the range, which was a shame because it\u2019s so good in almost every other way\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Supra got some votes (again, as it did in every one of these categories), although here it appeared more for nit-picking reasons of subjective personal taste rather than a fundamental flaw.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Volvo XC40 on dockside\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/volvo_xc40_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=ls_qU_I_\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A real-world range of only 240 miles counted against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/audi\/e-tron-gt\">Audi E-tron GT<\/a>, an otherwise fabulous electric grand tourer, for Page as it did for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/lexus\/rz\/long-term-reviews\/lexus-rz-2023-long-term-test\"> Lexus RZ<\/a> for Saunders, while Lane wanted a better ride from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/peugeot\/408\/long-term-reviews\/peugeot-408-2023-long-term-test\">Peugeot 408<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Clements put forward the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/byd\/atto-3\/long-term-reviews\/byd-atto-3-2023-long-term-test\">BYD Atto 3<\/a>\u2019s \u201centire electrical system\u201d for this award, perhaps confusing it for an MGB.<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;head turner&#8217; prize<\/h2>\n<h2><em><span>For the car that gained the most interest\/attention from friends, family and strangers<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ora Funky Cat driving\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/ora_funky_cat_front.jpg?itok=E0kFQ-_y\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner:<\/strong> Ora Funky Cat<\/p>\n<p>This year has had plenty of shock results: political by-elections defying the pollsters, England losing to Afghanistan at the Cricket World Cup, Scotland qualifying for another major football tournament (love you really, Scotland).<\/p>\n<p>But all are eclipsed by a landslide win here for the Ora Funky Cat (sadly since renamed the GWM Ora 03). It\u2019s the Chinese electric supermini\u2019s first major honour thanks to it turning more heads than the Bentley Flying Spur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/jaguar\/f-type\/long-term-reviews\/jaguar-f-type-2023-long-term-test\">Jaguar F-Type<\/a> and even a Kermit-the-Frog-green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/audi\/tt-rs\/first-drives\/audi-tt-rs-coupe-long-term-review\">Audi TT RS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probs the Funky Cat, innit, because \u2018WTF is that?\u2019\u201d said the usually quite eloquent, feline-loving Prior, who was so dazzled by the Funky Cat\u2019s wonder and mystery that he resorted to youth text-speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the short time it was on my drive, a string of people asked what it was,\u201d said Attwood. \u201cThey all thought I was making up the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome thought it was cute, some thought it was hilarious and some thought it was just sinfully ugly,\u201d said Page, first name Felix \u2013 and no, we\u2019re not going there. \u201cNone knew what it was, because Great Wall Motor decided to launch it here with no badges on the rear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hmm, there\u2019s a bit of a theme developing here. Maybe it hasn\u2019t won for the right reasons. Why did you vote for it, Richard Lane? \u201cMostly for the wrong reasons, it must be said. My sister took the\u00a0piss out of it relentlessly.\u201d Ah.<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;miles of smiles&#8217; award<\/h2>\n<p><em>For the car from which we derived the most driving pleasure<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Toyota GR Supra cornering\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/toyota_supra_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=cxMaE3-K\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Toyota GR Supra<\/p>\n<p><strong>Runner up: <\/strong>Peugeot 408<\/p>\n<p>He voted for it in every category, so it\u2019s only right we give the first word on the Supra to Verpraet: \u201cDuh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That really is all he offered in support of why the Supra got his vote here. So let\u2019s elaborate on his somewhat concise assessment by repurposing some lines from his nominations for the Supra to win all of the other awards.<\/p>\n<p>Practicality? \u201cIt has a hatchback. That\u2019s all I need, really. If I had a Range Rover, my stuff would just roll around in the boot.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Head-turner? \u201cTook it to Belgium, and in the land where driving fun goes to die, being in a red two-seat sports car is akin to running naked through the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And finally the Best Feature: \u201cThe Supra\u2019s manual gearbox. It\u2019s the future (it\u2019s not, but I wish it was).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saunders was on hand to best describe why so many of us chose the Supra here. Simply put, it \u201clit up many a commute in the summer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The other sports cars on our fleet featured in the voting, including the TT RS to which Page gave the nod because he \u201cwas addicted to the noise more than anything\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The only everyday motor to score a vote was the Peugeot 408, courtesy of Culmer: \u201cI really enjoyed this crossovery thing much more than I had expected. It nicely blends comfort and control.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;best feature&#8217; award<\/h2>\n<p><em>For our favourite feature, system or innovation on a car<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Citroen C5X driving\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/01-citroen-c5-x-rt-2022-lead_1.jpg?itok=j4vJyW95\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Citroen C5X<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly there were many different nominees here, even one from Saunders that drifted beyond the confines of the Our Cars fleet: \u201cI\u2019m a parent, so nothing beats the Stow \u2019n Vac built-in vacuum cleaner I found in a Chrysler Pacifica airport taxi on a visit to Italy earlier this year. Amazing. All homes \u2013 well, all cars \u2013 should have one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back to the vehicles actually here at Autocar, and Cropley raved about the latest mild-hybrid developments to the Ford Focus\u2019s 1.0-litre triple engine, yours truly chose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/nissan\/ariya\">Nissan Ariya<\/a>\u2019s thick carpets that double as sound-deadening, Attwood picked the rotating infotainment screen in the BYD Atto 3, Prior the VW Multivan\u2019s \u201cmint\u201d Harman Kardon stereo, Page the buttons in the Range Rover\u2019s boot that lower the loading height and staff writer Jack Warwick couldn\u2019t live without the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/lexus\">Lexus<\/a> RZ\u2019s knee warmers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Matt Prior driving Citroen C5X\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/citroen_c5x_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=SvA4CECE\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The only car with more than one vote was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/citroen\/c5-x\">Citro\u00ebn C5 X<\/a> for its hydraulic bump stops and camera-based adaptive suspension. \u201cDelightful\u201d is how digital editor Murray Scullion succinctly put it.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Culmer marvelled that a manufacturer \u201chad come up with the interesting idea of making tyres thicker and suspension softer so as to make a car\u2019s ride actually not uncomfortable\u201d. Detecting a hint of sarcasm there&#8230; \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;pick your own&#8217; awards<\/h2>\n<p><em>Made-up honours we would give a car on our fleet<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jack Harrison loading photography gear into Toyota Corolla Commercial\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/toyota_corolla_commercial_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=MXxB91Fw\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Steve Cropley: Toyota Corolla Commercial<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It wins my Modesty Award (aka my Great Proposition Award) for the car that offers no pretensions or sophistication but which is more refined, smoother, more durable, more economical and more comfortable than many here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Attwood: Ford Focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No other car is more deserving of a Why Would They Stop Making That Award. The Ford Focus is spacious (and especially so in estate form), frugal, affordable and good to drive. It\u2019s enough to make you miss it before it\u2019s gone.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Skoda Enyaq iV coupe vRS driving front\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/skoda_enyaq_vrs_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=2IwQQgLj\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark Tisshaw: Skoda Enyaq iV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-review\/skoda\/enyaq-iv-vrs\/long-term-reviews\/skoda-enyaq-coupe-vrs-2023-long-term-test#:~:text=The%20Enyaq%20iV%20is%20perhaps,only%20add%20to%20that%20aura.\">Skoda Enyaq iV<\/a> wins my coveted Who Signed Off Those Heater Controls Award. I had to pull over half a mile into driving for the first time just to work out how to make the cabin warmer. A fix can\u2019t come soon enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Murray Scullion: Lexus RZ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RZ should win a Worst Battery Management Award. Despite the improvements over the Toyota bZ4X, I\u2019ve never had the RZ get even close to its WLTP figure \u2013 or even the range figure the car itself displays on the dashboard.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Volkswagen Multivan\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/volkswagen_multivan_side.jpg?itok=4_pnuJ4v\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Felix Page: Volkswagen Multivan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Not Just For Christmas Award. The Multivan is in effect a small building that drives like a car \u2013 and a pretty decent one, at that. A rather resounding answer to the whole \u201cif you could only have one vehicle forever\u201d debate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Illya Verpraet: Alpina D3 S<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A deserving recipient of the Tyre Fitters\u2019 Award for a steady stream of business.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Audi e-Tron GT\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/audi_e_tron_gt_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=MYTP7ke0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sam Phillips: Audi E-tron GT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d give a special All-Rounder Award to the Audi E-tron GT. It\u2019s refined, fast, highly capable and excellent both to be in and simply to look at. The fact that it\u2019s electrically powered is almost incidental.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kris Culmer: Ora Funky Cat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Please Shut Up Award goes to China. Felix Page was \u2018rewarded\u2019 for his four-star first drive verdict of this EV with four months of being patronisingly told to \u2018please brake\u2019 every two seconds. Poor bloke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Alfa Romeo Tonale driving front\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/sites\/autocar.co.uk\/files\/styles\/body-image\/public\/alfa_romeo_tonale_front_three_quarter.jpg?itok=8G6OrWo8\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alistair Clements: Alfa Romeo Tonale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Never mind the Funky Cat, our You Called It What Award had to land here.
