How many comedians start their stand-up hours by quoting Henry David Thoreau?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We expect something like that from Dave Chappelle<\/a>. Thoughtful. Different. Provocative.<\/p>\n

Smart.<\/p>\n

Yet what many will remember most about \u201cThe Dreamer,\u201d his latest Netflix special, is how eager he is to taunt his angriest critics.<\/p>\n

\"YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, Chappelle “goes there” more than a few times, even bragging about how he loves to \u201cpunch down.\u201d The indifferent special feels like his way of saying, \u201cnanny-nanny poo-poo \u2026 I can still say what I want and Netflix won\u2019t do doo-doo.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s wonderful, on paper. He shouldn\u2019t be canceled for jokes.<\/p>\n

No one should.<\/p>\n

When you push the envelope the jokes should be the best of the best, and that hardly describes \u201cThe Dreamer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show, taped at the Lincoln Theatre in D.C., opens with Chappelle recalling how he struggled to fill the seats in the very theater he\u2019s performing at 24 years ago. His first big joke targets the trans community.<\/p>\n

Here we go … or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not f***ing with those people any more. It\u2019s not worth the trouble \u2026 maybe three or four times a night,\u201d he says, a fair estimate given what follows.<\/p>\n

He spent more time provoking another community.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight, I\u2019m doing all handicapped jokes. They\u2019re not as organized as the gays,\u201d he cracks before telling a story tied to former GOP congressman Madison Cawthorn, who uses a wheelchair following a car accident.<\/p>\n

He moves on to strip clubs, thoughts on the Chris Rock\/Will Smith \u201cslap\u201d incident and his own attack at the Hollywood Bowl last year.<\/a><\/p>\n
