For<br \/>\nexample, despite a current surplus in lithium, demand projections<br \/>\nfor the mineral will likely be in deficit by 2027, according to a<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodityinsights\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/metals\/121123-new-lithium-mining-refining-projects-set-to-strengthen-europes-battery-supply-chains\"><br \/>\nforecast by S&amp;amp;P Global Market Intelligence<\/a>. That will<br \/>\ncreate a bottleneck for automotive supply and drive the industry&#39;s<br \/>\nfocus toward battery recycling to keep EV battery costs down,<br \/>\naccording to a S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility analysis.<\/p>\n<p >In addition to the ecological costs of mining, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/mobility\/en\/research-analysis\/a-reckoning-for-ev-battery-raw-materials.html\"><br \/>\nhumanitarian concerns accessing certain battery-grade raw<br \/>\nmaterials<\/a> \u2014 such as sourcing cobalt from the Democratic<br \/>\nRepublic of the Congo, where a variety of geo-political issues are<br \/>\nin play. There are also macroeconomic concerns regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/mobility\/en\/research-analysis\/a-reckoning-for-ev-battery-raw-materials.html\"><br \/>\nregional monopoly of mainland China in vertically integrating<br \/>\nmaterial supply and refining<\/a>. In addition to investing heavily<br \/>\nin offshore mines, mainland China controls most of the world&#39;s<br \/>\ncobalt and lithium refining \u2014 the crucial middle step between<br \/>\nmining and cell manufacturing. More than 60% of both cobalt and<br \/>\nlithium are refined in mainland China.<\/p>\n<p >In response, several countries have been mandating increased<br \/>\nlocal sourcing of raw materials. But countries not having natural<br \/>\nreserves for these materials will have to rely on recycling<br \/>\nend-of-life (EOL) batteries for their resources. By 2032, S&amp;amp;P<br \/>\nGlobal Mobility estimates around 900 GWh of EOL batteries will be<br \/>\navailable for recycling. That&#39;s the equivalent of batteries for 12<br \/>\nmillion electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p >Foreseeing a challenge in securing raw materials, several<br \/>\nautomakers have established partnerships with raw-material<br \/>\nsuppliers and recyclers. For example, Volkswagen and Audi have<br \/>\npartnered with Redwood Materials in North America, Umicore in<br \/>\nEurope, and Ganfeng Lithium in mainland China for battery<br \/>\nrecycling.<\/p>\n<p >Some automakers are setting up in-house operations. Early in<br \/>\n2023, Mercedes-Benz broke ground on a battery recycling plant in<br \/>\nKuppenheim, Germany, that had been scheduled to begin mechanical<br \/>\ndismantling of EV batteries by year&#39;s end. Tesla also has announced<br \/>\nplans for its battery factories to recycle batteries on-site.<\/p>\n<p ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ihsmarkit.com\/www\/images\/0124\/battery-recycling-jan24-img1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"596\" \/><\/p>\n<p >\nIn addition, production scrap is seen as a key play. Scrap<br \/>\ngenerated during battery manufacturing includes rejected or<br \/>\ndefective batteries and materials or components that do not meet<br \/>\nquality standards. It consists of metals, electrolytes, and other<br \/>\ncomponents. Scrap from cell production accounts for a large part of<br \/>\nthe total production scrap, followed by battery-pack production<br \/>\nscrap and battery-module production scrap.<\/p>\n<p >The hardest aspect of the battery manufacturing process to get<br \/>\nconsistently correct is cell production, due to its complexity.<br \/>\nTherefore, this process inherently generates most scrap. For the<br \/>\ncell, S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility estimates a rate of 4-12% scrap for<br \/>\nsteady production, based on the type of supplier and cell type. But<br \/>\nthat number can be as high as 15-30% for companies in their<br \/>\nstart-up phase. In contrast, for the battery module and pack, a<br \/>\n0.5% to 1.5% scrap rate is closer to the norm.<\/p>\n<p >However, production scrap may see a diminishing rate of return<br \/>\nbased on optimization of manufacturing processes, changing battery<br \/>\nchemistries, and even the evolution of the shape of the battery<br \/>\ncell.<\/p>\n<p >Recycling is projected to provide significantly more battery<br \/>\nmetals over the next 10 years. In 2023, around 40,000 metric tons<br \/>\nof nickel and 8,400 metric tons of cobalt will be recovered from<br \/>\nrecycled lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries and production scrap<br \/>\nglobally. Nickel will see a 28.1% compound annual growth rate<br \/>\n(CAGR) to around 382,000 metric tons by 2032, while cobalt will<br \/>\nincrease by a 22% CAGR to 51,000 metric tons, according to S&amp;amp;P<br \/>\nGlobal Mobility analysis.<\/p>\n<p >As a result, recycled cobalt from EOL recycled batteries and<br \/>\nproduction scrap is expected to meet more than 21% of the global<br \/>\ncobalt demand in 2032, up from around 12% in 2023. More than 19% of<br \/>\nthe total demand of nickel in 2032 is expected to be met from these<br \/>\nrecycled sources.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>The economics of EV battery recycling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >Even though there will be an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/mobility\/en\/research-analysis\/over-95-million-electrified-vehicles-in-operation.html\"><br \/>\n95 million out-of-warranty electric vehicles by 2033<\/a>, it&#39;s not<br \/>\na straightforward equation for high-voltage battery recyclers.<br \/>\nAlthough recycling requires less energy and generates less<br \/>\npollution compared with mining, the economics of recycling may not<br \/>\nalways be favorable without policy support.<\/p>\n<p ><a href=\"https:\/\/autotechinsight.ihsmarkit.com\/news\/5271766\/batteries-on-the-brink-opportunities-and-challenges\"><br \/>\nA recent report by S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility<\/a> (subscription<br \/>\nrequired) noted that differing regional government policies can<br \/>\nhinder consistent strategic plans for OEMs. For example, while the<br \/>\nEU passed regulations in July 2023 mandating EV battery recycling,<br \/>\nthe US does not have similar legislation in place &#8211; opting instead<br \/>\nfor incentives for manufacturing with local content, as outlined in<br \/>\nits Inflation Reduction Act.<\/p>\n<p >Western OEMs and suppliers must also contend with the ascendancy<br \/>\nof mainland China &#8211; the largest market for end-of-life new-energy<br \/>\nvehicles (NEVs) &#8211; which is projected to dominate the skyrocketing<br \/>\nrecycling scene. Total production scrap is expected to rise from 40<br \/>\nGWh in 2023 to 135 GWh in 2032, with end-of-life batteries expected<br \/>\nto rise from 16 GWh in 2023 to 438 GWh in 2032, according to<br \/>\nS&amp;amp;P Global Mobility analysis.<\/p>\n<p >Despite the size of the Chinese market, there is little<br \/>\nopportunity for new, foreign players to enter the battery-recycling<br \/>\nbusiness there. The 10 largest hydrometallurgy battery recycling<br \/>\nplants in mainland China already process a total of more than 1<br \/>\nmegaton of batteries. In addition, in 2022, China had nearly 8,000<br \/>\nrecycling players (each with more than RMB 10m, or $1.5m, in<br \/>\nregistered capital); that number grew to 20,000 in 2023. Most of<br \/>\nthese firms currently focus on production scrap, but EOL recycling<br \/>\nis projected to exceed production scrap in China in 2026, and in<br \/>\nthe rest of the world in 2027.<\/p>\n<p >As such, recyclers looking to get into the game will likely have<br \/>\nbetter chances and more opportunity setting up shop in the EU and<br \/>\nUS, the S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility report stated.<\/p>\n<p >Not that EOL recycling is an easy task. Changes in EV battery<br \/>\nsystems will potentially make recycling more difficult. Dismantling<br \/>\nthe pack, the crucial step in pre-treatment for recycling, is labor<br \/>\nintensive in that it must be done manually for a high-voltage<br \/>\nbattery cell and module. That will become more complicated as the<br \/>\nindustry moves from cell\/module\/pack to cell\/pack &#8211; where the cell<br \/>\nbody will be nearly impossible to disassemble manually because of<br \/>\nits module configuration. And by 2030 the pack and body<br \/>\nconfiguration is set to be in nearly 50% of EVs.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Changing battery chemistries affect processes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >Availability of metals for recycling will vary significantly by<br \/>\nregion and technology rollout. Owing to current demand for lithium<br \/>\niron phosphate (LFP) batteries, mainland China will generate a much<br \/>\nhigher availability of lithium from recycled batteries than other<br \/>\nregions. But the availability of cobalt and nickel will be much<br \/>\nlower for those batteries.<\/p>\n<p >However, growth in demand for new-tech nickel cobalt manganese<br \/>\n(NCM) batteries in mainland China will ramp up much faster than LFP<br \/>\nbatteries &#8211; thus increasing nickel recovered from EOL batteries in<br \/>\nthe long term.<\/p>\n<p >North America will have a stronger share of high-nickel<br \/>\nbatteries. Between 2023 and 2032, availability of cobalt, nickel,<br \/>\nand lithium from EOL batteries and production scrap should grow at<br \/>\nCAGRs of 23.8%, 26.2% and 27.3%, respectively, according to S&amp;amp;P<br \/>\nGlobal Mobility estimates.<\/p>\n<p >The US will likely be among the most active markets moving<br \/>\ntoward cobalt-free Li-ion batteries, which will keep the demand for<br \/>\ncobalt from the region in check.<\/p>\n<p >Europe is expected to have the highest levels of battery<br \/>\nrecycling across all regions until the end of the decade, owing to<br \/>\ntightening local-sourcing regulations. Between 2023 and 2032 in<br \/>\nEurope, the availability of cobalt, nickel, and lithium from EOL<br \/>\nbatteries and production scrap will likely grow at CAGRs of 24.7%,<br \/>\n33.4% and 32.1%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p >Other than just serving as a source for critical battery raw<br \/>\nmaterials, recycling will play a key role in reducing the<br \/>\nenvironmental impact of batteries. During the life cycle of an EV,<br \/>\nbattery cell manufacturing and raw material mining make the largest<br \/>\ncontribution toward CO2 emissions.
