Great Pretender<\/a><\/em> is a crime-caper series, not unlike Lupin III<\/em>, but less cartoon-zany. This is a hardboiled show, with sex, drugs and real-world grit; it has bold, unreal colours without feeling lurid; and its character designs are by Evangelion<\/em> legend Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. <\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Right from the off, Great<\/em> Pretender<\/em> surrounds us with hustles and counter-hustles. Our viewpoint is Edamura, a Japanese man who considers himself the world\u2019s greatest con artist, and who\u2019s therefore outraged when he finds himself<\/em> conned by a foreigner, a Frenchman called Laurent Thierry. In the first episodes, Edamura finds himself roped into a con that Laurent is pulling in Los Angeles. It involves various complications, including drugs and a monstrous Hollywood producer. Made in 2020, Great Pretender<\/em> ended up being a post-Weinstein anime, perhaps by luck \u2013 the writer Ryota Kosawa started work on Pretender<\/em> in 2014, before the Weinstein scandal broke.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s in L.A. that Edamura meets the third member of the show\u2019s impromptu \u201cteam,\u201d Abigail, a ball-busting Iraqi woman. The Californian setting lasts for the first story arc, but later episodes make the series truly international, flying to Singapore, the UAE, France and even far-flung London. It\u2019s soon clear this isn\u2019t just <\/em>a caper show, with each of the main characters having backstory baggage that a series like Lupin<\/em> wouldn\u2019t often bother with. For example, Abigail\u2019s Iraqi nationality is most definitely relevant to the story. The series is grown-up stuff, and it\u2019s interesting its writer is something of an outsider to anime.<\/p>\n

Ryota Kosawa has very few other anime credits. He\u2019s better known for his collaborations with Takashi Yamazaki, who directed last winter\u2019s monster hit Godzilla Minus One<\/em>. That one wasn\u2019t<\/em> by Kosawa, but he co-scripted Yamazaki\u2019s two live-action Parasyte<\/em> films, based on the horror manga by Hiroshi Iwaaki. Kosawa had previously co-scripted Yamazaki\u2019s nostalgic film trilogy Always: Sunset on Third Street<\/em>, set in 1960s Tokyo. <\/p>\n

The fact that Great Pretender<\/em>\u2019s writer is from \u201coutside\u201d anime suggests that the Wit studio, which made the series, was aiming for something different from the anime norm. That\u2019s also suggested by comments by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, though his very presence as character designer will draw in anime fans. Interviewed<\/a> by MyAnimeList <\/em>and Anime Trending<\/em>, Sadamoto remembered his schooldays watching anime such as Lupin<\/em>. \u201c(Great Pretender<\/em>) is more on the realistic side,\u201d he said, \u201cand people who enjoy these types of more realistic anime are sort of our target\u2026 When I was little, there was no word \u201cotaku\u201d or word for anime lovers like that\u2026 I wouldn\u2019t say (Great Pretender<\/em>) is just for anime fans but for a wide audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sounds like Shinichiro Watanabe\u2019s comments on creating Cowboy Bebop<\/em>, a previous caper anime that broke the mould. Actually, that Cowboy Bebop<\/em> link is obvious from Pretender<\/em>\u2019s opening credits sequence. It\u2019s another jazzy title theme (by composer Yutaka Yamada), and another delightful play with graphic shapes in the tradition of the legendary American titles designer Saul Bass<\/a>. More specifically, Great Pretender<\/em>\u2019s title sequence is plainly referencing a tribute<\/em> to Bass \u2013 the opening<\/a> to Steven Spielberg\u2019s 2002 caper film Catch Me If You Can<\/em>, whose titles were created by Florence Deygas and Oliver Kuntzel.<\/p>\n

The in-series art style, meanwhile, comes from someone else again, an American artist called Brian Cox (no relation to the actor or the physicist). \u201cDuring the preparation stage for Great Pretender<\/em>,\u201d Sadamoto explained<\/a> to Anime News Network<\/em>, \u201cI went to an Aoyama Book Centre in Roppongi, and in the Western literature corner I saw a Brian Cook artbook. I bought a number of his Vintage Britain<\/em> books\u2026 When creating the image boards and backgrounds, I took the shape and the atmosphere of the colours and so forth from the artbook… When it was combined with the quirks of the individual background artists, it was interesting how the background art style developed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything about Great Pretender <\/em>seems meant to go beyond anime as it\u2019s usually conceived, even as it draws on deep (and sometimes forgotten) traditions in the medium. Edamura, for example, gives us the viewpoint of a Japanese man, but he\u2019s surrounded by characters from multiple countries. The series\u2019 director Hiro Kaburagi had previously made the 2016 anime thriller 91 Days<\/em>, about an Italian hero taking on the Mafia in Prohibition America. Kubaragi told Anime News Network<\/em> that when he made Great Pretender<\/em>, \u201cI was conscious about giving balanced roles to both the male and female characters, as well as giving diverse roles to characters across different races. I took care to ensure that even the villains aren\u2019t defined by their nationality or race, and I tried as much as possible to make the characters hard to hate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadamoto made similar comments to Anime Trending. <\/em>\u201cThis is really a story about con men, essentially about bad guys, but they aren\u2019t like dark heroes or anything. They\u2019re very human and have a human side, so I think they\u2019re very lovable characters. I think we did a good job of portraying that, so I hope that people will like the characters.\u201d<\/p>\n
