In our look back at the successes on Hemmings Auctions<\/a> and Hemmings Make Offer<\/a> for the past week, we are reminded that collectors remain as hungry for Corvettes as ever. We look at two from very different generations that benefited from product-year updates: a 1956 Corvette C1 and a 1994 Corvette C4 Coupe. Another Chevy in the mix this week is a 1962 Impala SS Convertible that significantly outperformed its reserve. From the same era comes another droptop on our list of successes for the week: a 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible. Another Ford from an entirely different era arrives on this list via a massively expensive make offer that resulted in a 1915 Ford Model T Center-Door Sedan street rod, something you are unlikely to see anywhere else. Finally, there is a German GT car on the menu in the form of a 1982 Porsche 928.<\/p>\n

For the week of December 31 through January 6, a total of 31 listings crossed the Hemmings Auctions block. Including Make Offer listings of previously ended auctions, a total of 24 cars were sold, resulting in a net 77% sell-through rate. An additional 11 cars were sold via direct Make Offer listings.<\/p>\n

1915 Ford Model T Center-Door Sedan Street Rod<\/h3>\n

Street rods are about as personal as a car can get, each one the realized vision of an owner and its builder. The sellers of this 1915 For Model T Center-Door Sedan street rod<\/a> shared that it cost $340,000 to build and had won trophies at such prestigious events as the Grand National Roadster Show and Autorama. It was powered by a Ford 347-cu.in. \u201cstroker\u201d small-block V8 with a parts list that reads like a who\u2019s who of the speed parts world. It also featured a bespoke suspension that appeared to be largely machined from billet aluminum. Though street rod performance at auctions is hard to predict, this one ultimately sold via post-auction Make Offer at a price within the expected market range.<\/p>\n

Just one year after the start of installing its new OHV V8 into the Corvette, Chevrolet made it a proper convertible for 1956 with actual roll-up windows instead of the earlier car\u2019s side curtains. It was also for 1956 that Chevy first offered the Corvette with the side coves that became an iconic part of the first-generation\u2019s unmistakable design. This 1956 Chevrolet Corvette<\/a> appeared to be in excellent condition with an older repaint in Venetian Red, very clean appearing leather interior, a proper qual-quad 265-cu.in. V8 and a four-speed manual that was not original to the car. With over 25,000 views and 27 bids, this Vette sold well above reserve and toward the high end of the recent market range.<\/p>\n

1966 Ford Mustang Convertible<\/h3>\n

When it comes to postwar American collector vehicles, few cars can hold a candle to the Mustang, which saw more than 1.2 million cars produced in its first two model years. This 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible<\/a> appeared to have been restored to a high standard with no discernible modifications. With its white folding top, C-code, two-barrel 289 and three-speed automatic, it also looked like the perfect fair weather cruiser. When the bidding didn\u2019t quite reach reserve on auction, this pony car found a new home via a post-Auction Make Offer listing on Hemmings.com, with a net sale price still over the reserve and toward the high end of the current market range for a \u201966 Mustang Convertible.<\/p>\n

Chevrolet\u2019s Impala SS Convertible was a popular car when new and remains a popular model with collectors, but this 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible<\/a> surprised us with the furious bidding that all happened in the closing minutes of the auction. Of 21 total bids, 12 came late enough to extend the bidding, at first besting the reserve at the last minute and later realizing a net sale price that exceeded even the high end of the recent market range. This partially restored example had been refinished outside, reupholstered inside, and had its engine rebuilt as well, but it did appear to remain largely authentic. Perhaps that condition and low ownership led to the strong result.<\/p>\n

With its introduction in 1977, Porsche had intended the front-engined, water-cooled, V8-powered 928 to replace the venerable 911. The market responded pretty strongly and the 911 is still with us today, but that reaction shouldn\u2019t take away from the 928\u2019s bona fides as a high-tech, high-speed, comfortable touring car. The 928 stayed in production through to the mid-1990s. This 1982 Porsche 928<\/a> crushed its reserve at auction, finishing with a net sale price some 93% over reserve, a result likely owing to the car\u2019s nearly unmodified condition, low mileage and five-speed manual transmission. Additionally, it featured seats reupholstered in black vinyl along with new carpets.<\/p>\n

1994 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe<\/h3>\n

Chevrolet kept the fourth-gen Corvette in production for 13 model years. Fortunately for Vette enthusiasts, Chevy did not sit still and kept improving the car year to year. Engine output grew from just 205 horsepower and 290 lb-ft in 1984 to 300 horsepower and 340 lb-ft from the LT1 found in this 1994 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe<\/a>. Engineers also did away with the compromised 4+3 manual transmission in favor of a proper ZF six-speed manual. This example appeared to be in excellent condition and showed under 45,000 miles at the time of submission. Its unmodified condition, relatively rare Competition Yellow finish and six-speed manual surely contributed to its net sale price at the high end of the market range.<\/p>\n
