Today is \u201csleeper day\u201d for Winter 2024. \u00a0That makes it a pretty important benchmark for how the season will go, since the performance of the top four shows is pretty much hard-wired and it\u2019s unlikely (though certainly not impossible) I\u2019ll find anything really excellent from the lower ranks of the preview. The first to hit the boards is Majo to Yajuu<\/em>, which was a show I had pretty high expectations for despite having no direct experience with the source material – in part because the review of that source material are generally very good.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s always tempting to try and slot new series into a niche, and define them in part by what they resemble. \u00a0The obvious candidate with Majo to Yajuu<\/em> is Undead Girl Murder Farce<\/em> (which itself had an obvious candidate in Revenger<\/em>). \u00a0This premiere was certainly not on a par with UGMF<\/em>, but there is a sort of common vibe. \u00a0To be honest what really struck me was that the art was reminiscent of Matsumoto Leiji – especially the character design for Guideau<\/a> (Taichi You<\/a><\/em>), the \u201cbeast\u201d of the title. \u00a0But tonally it stands as pretty distinct – I sense we\u2019re in for more of a battle series here.<\/p>\n

\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The premise finds the aforementioned Guideau traveling with a soft-spoken, chain smoking mage named Ashaf<\/a> (Morikawa Toshiyuki<\/a><\/em>). \u00a0His nature certainly stands in contrast to Guideau, who\u2019s hotheaded and verbally abusive to a fault and frankly a lot to take. \u00a0They arrive in a vaguely steampunk city searching for a witch, her rather impatiently. \u00a0Ashaf preaches patience, Guideau goes in guns (and mouth) blazing, that\u2019s clearly the dynamic. \u00a0In this city \u201cLady Witch\u201d is considered a hero and a protector, but our titular duo are skeptical about her good nature to say the least.<\/p>\n

The witch, Ione<\/a> (Hikasa Youko<\/a><\/em>) certainly does turn out to be evil – though not the witch Guideau is searching for, who cursed her. \u00a0In this mythology there are only two means of removing a witch\u2019s curse, kissing a \u201cPrince Charming\u201d or getting the witch to remove it. \u00a0As it turns out kissing a witch works too even if it\u2019s not the curse-r, but only temporarily (kind of the kissing your sister of curse removal). \u00a0Ione has been playing a long game of revenge after her grandmother was blamed for the fire she sealed<\/a> and saved the city from 417 years earlier, and burned at the stake. \u00a0And the disciples she\u2019s drawn into her circles are her means of doing so, acting as \u201ckeys\u201d to unseal the fire on the anniversary of its sealing.<\/p>\n

\n\"Majo<\/a><\/p>\n

The gist of this seems to be that witches are usually<\/em> evil, but seems to allow some wiggle room for exceptions (and acknowledges that witches were persecuted irrespective of that). \u00a0Ashaf does comment that he\u2019d hoped to resolve things amicably, suggesting that it\u2019s at least theoretically possible. \u00a0 He and Guideau work for a the \u201cOrder of Magical Resonance\u201d, which at first flush appears to be effectively a witch hunter general but may be more nuanced that that. \u00a0Her real motivation is that curse, though. \u00a0And a kiss with Ione after an interesting battle releases a beast<\/a> from inside the coffin Ashaf always carries, which seems to be her true identity. \u00a0Whatever it is, it\u2019s strong enough to take down Ione and get her apprehended.<\/p>\n

All this is quite interesting, though not truly compelling yet. \u00a0The Witch and the Beast<\/em> certainly looks good – Yokohama Animation Lab doesn\u2019t immediately spring to mind as a top-tier production house but the animation is crisp (and mostly 2-D) and the backgrounds detailed and very pretty. \u00a0Director Hamana Takayuki is extremely experienced and consistently competent or better, if not the auteur that Hatakeyama Mamoru is (which may result in a gap between this show and Undead Girl Murder Farce<\/em> more than the writing will). \u00a0I definitely see potential here and after the premiere I\u2019m more encouraged than not, but there\u2019s still work to be done and questions to be answered for me.<\/p>\n
