At one point Tom Holland came over to our table for a big hug with RDJ, and it warmed my Marvel-loving heart. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CriticsChoice?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CriticsChoice<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QHxZwgX0MN\">pic.twitter.com\/QHxZwgX0MN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ErikDavis\/status\/1746735057900011855?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 15, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The pair have worked together previously on five MCU projects as Tony Stark and Peter Parker respectively, and also appeared in 2020&#8217;s <em>Doolittle<\/em> (which <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/robert-downey-jr-dolittle-lead-razzie-nominations-list\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the less is said about<\/a>, the better). Their ability to bounce off each other was one of the highlights of the much loved Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and something even the incredibly fickle Marvel fandom seemed to all agree was one of the best things about the <em>Avengers<\/em> and <em>Spider-Man<\/em> films.<\/p>\n<p>Both were nominated for awards at last night&#8217;s ceremony, although only Downey Jr. came away with a prize, which was awarded for his stellar work in <em>Oppenheimer<\/em>. Holland would have certainly agreed with that win, as he&#8217;s previously stated in an <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oosKCCawV3g?si=JWB11YbqfZ0Q2z5K&amp;t=2111\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with the SAG-AFTRA<\/a> foundation that his &#8220;mentor&#8221; was the no. 1 scene-stealer in the critically acclaimed film:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI really respect Downey\u2019s opinion, he taught me so much and I always sing his praises. I love the guy, I admire him. I don\u2019t know if you guys have seen Oppenheimer yet but he\u2019s absolutely staggering in it, he steals the movie for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a sentiment Holland has clearly held for a while, as in an interview he did while promoting <em>Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> he was even more gushing:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;And that dynamic of Peter wanting a mentor is a big part of this movie. Yeah, it&#8217;s lovely. It&#8217;s a lovely dynamic and the dynamic [with Robert Downey Jr.] is also the same off screen. I mean, we&#8217;ve become really close. We&#8217;ve become great friends and I ask him for advice and vice versa sometimes. And it&#8217;s just become a really lovely relationship for me to have in the industry. Because, you know, as a young actor coming up in this world it can be very scary and it can be daunting. You can get bullied around. And it&#8217;s nice to have someone who&#8217;s got my back and who will give me some sound advice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fSsNv7P6nR4&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=552\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with BBC Radio 1 in his native land<\/a>, Holland has also let slip that the pair regularly FaceTime.<\/p>\n<p>With all of these good vibes between the two, you might think it&#8217;s only a matter of time until they work together again. After all, <em>Doolittle <\/em>wasn&#8217;t so bad it would have traumatized the pair from being on set together again (although, we cannot stress enough that it is a pretty awful film), and there&#8217;s no buzz without bees. So, are Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland planning to work together again? Emma Stone has been rumored to be playing the part of the famous singer&#8217;s sister Adele Astaire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fthe-actress-is-emma-but-i-cant-figure-out-who-the-actor-is-v0-56njo56924cc1.jpeg%3Fs%3D87ed66ac6bfc23ec904fe9161603ba691f59cb93\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by gossip hub Deuxmoi<\/a>, although there has been no confirmation of that yet. It has also not been confirmed who will be taking on the part of Ginger Rogers, Astaire&#8217;s longtime dance partner.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000375\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">per his IMDB<\/a>, Downey Jr. is currently involved in three upcoming projects: HBO miniseries <em>The Sympathizer<\/em>, sports comedy-drama <em>All-Star Weekend<\/em>, and a third Sherlock Holmes film. <\/p>\n<p>However, all isn&#8217;t lost for fans of the duo who long to see them reunited on screen. Holland is also currently attached to another <em>Spider-Man<\/em> film, and while Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige has said <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/kevin-feige-confirms-robert-downey-jr-wont-be-resurrected-in-the-mcu-but-iron-mans-return-is-still-staring-us-in-the-face\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Downey Jr. won&#8217;t be returning as Tony Stark<\/a>, the comic book franchise has shown that they will do anything for a buck, so don&#8217;t rule it out completely. However, the one that seems to have the most traction (and therefore is the most likely to be willed into production by the internet) is a <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/10-movies-in-need-of-a-remake\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reboot of <em>Back to the Future<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The more you think about this potential movie, the more it seems like a no-brainer. It puts the pair back into a familiar setting: sci-fi, with Downey Jr. as an eccentric genius and Holland as his younger partner. Holland&#8217;s boyish good looks also mean that he can still ostensibly pass for a Marty McFly aged character.<\/p>\n<p>The idea gained momentum after a deepfake was created with the pair in the main roles.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Robert Downey Jr and Tom Holland in Back to the future - This is heavy! [ deepfake ]\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8OJnkJqkyio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>However, you shouldn&#8217;t get too excited about seeing Doc and Marty back in action. In an interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dzJjmlRET_8&amp;ab_channel=AccessHollywood\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with <em>Access Hollywood<\/em><\/a>, Holland referred to <em>Back to the Future<\/em> as &#8220;one of the only perfect movies ever made,&#8221; adding &#8220;we [Holland and Downey Jr.] couldn&#8217;t do it any better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rights to the films are also controlled by director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale, and they&#8217;ve been unequivocal about not opening up the trilogy to more content:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cPeople say, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you guys do Back to the Future Part 4?\u201d When they say that, they\u2019re saying, \u201cI want something that makes me feel as good as the original did.\u201d That\u2019s what this is. That\u2019s the feeling you\u2019re going to get here when you see this show. There\u2019s no need to go back to that well. You\u2019ve seen too many people go back too many times. As I\u2019ve said many times, the characters in<em> Back to the Future<\/em> are my family, my children. You don\u2019t sell your kids into prostitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Then again, they did <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/celebrities\/it-really-is-a-small-miracle-michael-j-fox-praises-back-to-the-future-the-musical-as-he-attends-premiere-with-former-cast-mates\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make a <em>Back to the Future <\/em>musical<\/a>, and people do sometimes change their minds.
