The Florida State Seminoles, who scored wins over North Carolina and Virginia Tech. <\/p>\n<p id=\"lfVyY1\">Approximately two weeks into conference play and things are starting to get a bit wild in women\u2019s college basketball, with upsets rocking the standings and raising questions. Here\u2019s a look back on the action and accomplishments from Monday, Jan. 8 to Sunday, Jan. 14.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"p-entry-hr\" id=\"jKp7Kf\">\n<h2 id=\"JWqyhS\"><strong>The Seminoles are on a roll<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"jZlQid\">If you\u2019re an ACC team fresh off an upset and feeling pretty good about yourself, you don\u2019t want to see No. 21 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomahawknation.com\/\">Florida State<\/a> (14-4, 5-1) on your schedule. Both No. 20 North Carolina (11-5, 3-1), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swishappeal.com\/ncaa\/2024\/1\/9\/24031202\/ncaa-acc-north-carolina-nivar-notre-dame-hidalgo-virginia-tech-kitley-amoore-nc-state-duke-virginia\">coming off a big win over then-No. 16 Notre Dame<\/a> in South Bend, and No. 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobblercountry.com\/\">Virginia Tech<\/a> (13-3, 4-1), riding high after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swishappeal.com\/ncaa\/2024\/1\/8\/24022938\/ncaa-women-bball-virginia-tech-nc-state-elizabeth-kitley-georgia-amoore-saniya-rivers-grambling-win\">handing then-No. 3 NC State their first loss<\/a> of the season, discovered as much this past week. <\/p>\n<div id=\"9yzFRe\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Another ranked dub at  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NoleFAM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NoleFAM<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Rd5KPkymtk\">pic.twitter.com\/Rd5KPkymtk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 FSU Women&#8217;s Basketball (@fsuwbb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fsuwbb\/status\/1745891612574761286?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 12, 2024<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"TcggiV\">In both contests, fifth-year senior guard Sara Bejedi\u2019s prowess from behind the arc propelled the \u2018Noles, as she was 5-for-9 from 3 against the Tar Heels and Hokies. She finished with 23 points in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/boxscores\/2024-01-11-18-florida-state_w.html\">70-62<\/a> home win over UNC on Thursday; in Sunday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401603962\">89-80<\/a> upset of Virginia Tech, she totaled a career-high 31 points. Junior forward Makayla Timpson was solid in both contests, stepping up with an 11-point and 11-rebound double-double against UNC followed by 18 points, five boards and four blocks against Virginia Tech. They\u2019re currently among a mass of ACC teams sitting with one loss in conference, but, because the Seminoles have played six conference games, they\u2019re currently tied atop the standings. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"kzBSpG\"><strong>A peek at the Power Five standings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"cUeOxe\">The ACC\u2019s log jam, along with the number of notable in-conference upsets that rolled across women\u2019s college over the past week, makes it an interesting moment to take an early look at the Power Five\u2014ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC\u2014conference standings. <\/p>\n<h4 id=\"77UC0N\"><strong>ACC<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"O0oshj\">As mentioned above, Florida State claims a share of first place in the ACC. The other team at the top? No. 15 Louisville (15-2, 4-0). The Cardinals scored breezy wins over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401603954\">Pitt<\/a> (6-12, 0-5) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401603963\">Wake Forest<\/a> (4-13, 0-5) last week. Both certified their status on Saturday, as Iowa State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401603300\">handed No. 4 Baylor<\/a> (14-2, 3-2) a second-straight loss and K-State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401603304\">toppled No. 10 Texas<\/a> (16-2, 3-2) for the first time in nine tries. And that\u2019s despite another attack from the injury bug. <\/p>\n<p id=\"6p8JC3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/39279970\/uconn-aubrey-griffin-season-torn-acl\">On Wednesday<\/a>, the team announced that fifth-year senior forward Aubrey Griffin will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL in her left knee. Griffin suffered the injury in the Huskies\u2019 Jan. 3 win over Creighton. <\/p>\n<p id=\"AOvU8O\">When head coach Geno Auriemma settled on a reshuffled rotation after junior guard Azzi Fudd\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/38959108\/azzi-fudd-uconn-huskies-injury-season-acl-bueckers\">season-ending ACL injury<\/a>, Griffin flourished as a super sub, injecting games with energy, effort and activity from off the bench. Although her per game averages were modest\u20149.5 points and 6.0 rebounds\u2014her impact was eye-catching, oftentimes turning a defensive takeaway into an effortless transition score. <\/p>\n<div id=\"nvQnDM\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6zgb6NNqMu4?rel=0\" style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"dFzAow\">Griffin is the fourth Husky to see her season end prematurely because of a serious injury. Along with the aforementioned Fudd, sophomore forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/39119804\/uconn-forward-ayanna-patterson-year-knee-surgery\">Ayanna Patterson<\/a> (knee) and freshman forward Jana El Alfy (Achilles) are sidelined. Junior guard Caroline Ducharme also remains out indefinitely with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/39021325\/uconn-caroline-ducharme-sidelined-neck-spasms\">head and neck spasms<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"9h3KBb\">Since getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/boxscores\/2023-12-03-15-texas_w.html\">thumped by Texas<\/a> on Dec. 3, UConn has won 10-straight games, appearing to rediscover that classic Husky dominance. Thrust into larger roles, freshman guards KK Arnold and Ashlynn Shade have responded with reliable play, forming a solid starting group alongside senior big Aaliyah Edwards, senior guard Nika M\u00fchl and redshirt junior guard Paige Bueckers. While Shade has a sweet jumper and is unafraid to fire away, Arnold is an aggressive defender who pushes the pace. As a reserve, freshman guard Qadence Samuels has succeeded in approximating Griffin\u2019s energy, running the floor, crashing the glass and more willingly shooting as she has played at least 15 minutes over the past six games.<\/p>\n<div id=\"iWS9hs\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">KK Arnold with the steal<\/p>\n<p>Qadence Samuels with the tough finish <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/M0qPCspivi\">pic.twitter.com\/M0qPCspivi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 UConn Women\u2019s Basketball (@UConnWBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UConnWBB\/status\/1746266562435105001?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 13, 2024<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"qLpnaG\">Now, the Huskies need freshman forward Ice Brady similarly to step up. Her performance against St. John\u2019s was uneven; while she scored an efficient 17 points, she also had six turnovers and only four rebounds. If Brady cannot provide positive impact, UConn is severely undersized and overly dependent on Edwards. Although likely able to win the Big East with this current mix, it\u2019s hard to imagine the Huskies surviving, much less thriving, in March without some sort of boost. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Va7ypX\"><strong>Big-time stat lines, milestone-making plays and more<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"YyxIVd\">Let\u2019s look back at some of the best performances from the past week, beginning with a career night from fifth-year senior center <strong>Taiyanna Jackson<\/strong> in Kansas\u2019 upset of previously undefeated Baylor. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"hDkpDz\">The 6-foot-6 Jackson led the Jayhawks in their runaway win over the No. 4 Bears on Wednesday night with a dominant double-double of 27 points and 19 rebounds. The Jayhawks, who entered the game winless in the Big 12, reeled off a 16-0 run across the second and third quarters to take control of the game and cruise to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/boxscores\/2024-01-10-01-kansas_w.html\">87-66<\/a> victory. It was Kansas\u2019 first win over a team ranked in the top five since 2009. Jackson, who also scored her 1,000th-career point in the game, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/womens-college-basketball\/recap\/_\/gameId\/401603293\">said afterwards<\/a>, \u201cWe just wanted it. We had so much fun playing. We played as a team. We stayed connected, even when they went on their little runs.
