New EV equivalent to the Audi A6 Avant sheds much of its disguise; will get up to 435 miles of range<\/p>\n

The long-awaited electric version of the Audi A6<\/a> is nearly ready to be revealed, with prototypes shedding almost\u00a0all their camouflage during the final stages of development.<\/p>\n

A prototype of\u00a0the new A6 Avant E-tron has been spotted testing on roads around Germany, revealing its bold new design language\u00a0as it gears up to take on the\u00a0upcoming\u00a0<\/span>BMW i5<\/a>\u00a0Touring.<\/p>\n

Its profile\u00a0has been heavily\u00a0influenced by\u00a0last year’s acclaimed A6 Avant E-tron concept, gaining\u00a0with slim daytime running lights sitting above the main headlights, a large front grille, cameras to replace its rear-view mirrors\u00a0and completely redesigned rear lights with a (still obscured)\u00a0light bar.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also has door handles also\u00a0sit regressed into the bodywork \u2013\u00a0something not shown on the\u00a0concept \u2013\u00a0and new, aerodynamically optimised alloys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When it’s launched later this year, the\u00a0<\/span>electric car<\/a>\u00a0will become one of the first models to showcase the\u00a0<\/span>Audi<\/a>‘s refreshed design image\u00a0and one of the first electric executive\u00a0<\/span>estate cars<\/a>\u00a0on sale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Audi hasn’t yet given full details of the drivetrain, but\u00a0it’s expected to sit\u00a0on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE),\u00a0which Audi has developed in partnership with Porsche<\/a> and will\u00a0be deployed first in the new\u00a0<\/span>Porsche Macan EV<\/a>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0Audi Q6 E-tron<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The new A6’s specifications will likely mirror those of the PPE-based Q6 E-tron, which offers<\/span>\u00a0a 396bhp 100kWh battery in\u00a0’55’ trim, and is\u00a0<\/span>equipped with 800V charging architecture, which means\u00a0faster charging and a less\u00a0weight.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the range, there will be a choice of more performance-oriented dual-motor set-ups and efficiency-minded, rear-driven variants\u00a0offering 0-62mph times ranging from \u201cwell under\u201d 4sec to 7sec.<\/p>\n

A promised electric\u00a0Audi RS6 Avant<\/a>\u00a0successor could pack more than 600bhp, as previewed by the technically similar Porsche Macan EV<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In this application, the PPE platform accommodates a circa-100kWh floor-mounted battery that gives\u00a0a claimed 435 miles of range and can charge at a rate of 270kW to gain 186 miles of range from a 10-minute top-up.<\/p>\n

Because the battery is sited flat and arranged across the chassis, the earlier\u00a0concept version of the A6 Avant E-tron is said to offer broadly comparable interior dimensions and load capacity to the current A6 –\u00a0 a trait that will likely carry over to the production car.<\/p>\n

However, product marketing boss Niko Martens said EV platforms will ultimately \u201cgive more leeway and flexibility,\u00a0not just in the trunk [boot] but also up the front for a potential frunk\u201d.<\/p>\n

Importantly, the electric concept shows how the longer wheelbase afforded by an EV platform allows for more leg room in the front and rear.<\/p>\n

The A6 Avant E-tron measures 4960mm long, 1960mm wide and 1440mm tall, which makes it roughly the same size as its ICE\u00a0forebear.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Autocar,\u00a0Audi\u00a0design boss Marc Lichte said:<\/span>\u00a0“The A6 E-tron [will launch]\u00a0exactly three years after we launched the E-tron GT<\/a>, and on the A6 E-tron \u2013\u00a0as you could see on the concept car, which is very, very, very, very, very close to the production car \u2013\u00a0you can see that we will go\u00a0sleeker and simpler.”<\/p>\n

Following on from the A6, the new\u00a0A8, also launching this year,\u00a0will be “very close” to 2021’s Grandsphere concept<\/a>,\u00a0according to\u00a0Audi\u00a0design boss Marc Lichte.<\/p>\n

He also\u00a0strongly hinted to Autocar that the new\u00a0Audi Activesphere concept<\/a>\u00a0could become an ‘Allroad 2.0’ version of the next\u00a0Audi A7<\/a>\u00a0in 2027.<\/p>\n

The unveiling\u00a0of the A6 E-tron came just\u00a0a few months after Mercedes-Benz <\/a>product boss Markus Sch\u00e4fer told reporters that traditional estates faced an \u201cuncertain\u201d future in light of waning demand for low-riding family cars.<\/p>\n

Audi designer Phillipp R\u00f6mers\u00a0said: \u201cWe\u2019ve got a long tradition with very sporty, very emotional Avants. It\u2019s a tradition that really is in our roots and we want to continue it, so for us as designers, it\u2019s always fantastic to work on that bodystyle, because it\u2019s the perfect combination of usability and expressive, sporty design.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martens\u00a0concurred: \u201cWe still can see a buoyant demand for the car. It\u2019s not a concept that works globally, true, but it’s hugely successful and hotly in demand.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Grand plans for PPE platform<\/strong><\/p>\n

Audi has confirmed that the PPE will also be deployed in the segments immediately below and above the A6, which means the best-selling Audi A4<\/a> and range-topping Audi A8<\/a> will also be succeeded by PPE-based EVs.<\/p>\n

The company has already previewed the electric Audi A8<\/a> successor with the outlandish Grandsphere concept, but details of an electric A4 equivalent have yet to be given.<\/p>\n

It will no doubt tout performance specifications to match those of the larger A6 and also be offered in saloon and estate bodystyles, but it has yet to be given a release date.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Audi says the PPE can be used by both SUVs and the lower-slung traditional models, which means \u201celectric vehicles will now also be attractive to customers who prefer automobile concepts beyond the SUV segment\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, there\u2019s still no word on whether it could be used as the basis for a dedicated sports EV to succeed the Audi TT<\/a>,\u00a0or indeed the Audi R8<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
