For all four CASE systems (Connected,<br \/>\nAutomated, Shared, and Electrified), 2023 showed cracks in the<br \/>\nexpansion rates and long-term outlooks of these development focus<br \/>\nareas. But where does battery raw materials acquisition by OEMs and<br \/>\nsuppliers fit into the picture?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >As market level indicators such as interest rates, loan to<br \/>\nvalue, loan delinquency, and return to market all show headwinds &#8211;<br \/>\nOEM messaging has changed from confident expansion toward one of<br \/>\nvalue proposition. Suppliers with excessive debt coming to term<br \/>\nwill need to rebalance their near-term strategy toward making<br \/>\npayments on increased interest rates instead of long-term<br \/>\ninvestments.<\/p>\n<p >Underpinning all OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers are material supply<br \/>\nchains that directly determine which efforts will succeed by<br \/>\nchanging the economic feasibility, market reach, and technical<br \/>\nprowess of their investments.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>EV Battery Raw Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >For example, Rare Earth Elements underpin the magnets in many<br \/>\nelectrical motors, improve the material characteristics of legacy<br \/>\nmaterials, and enable ubiquitous technology such as touch sensitive<br \/>\ndisplays. This one category of minerals development feeds many of<br \/>\nthe advanced technology packages seen as luxurious or even simply<br \/>\ncompetitive by consumers.<\/p>\n<p >But also under scrutiny is a relatively mundane mineral: copper.<br \/>\nThe mining of copper is currently underinvested and pivotal within<br \/>\nenergy transition efforts, but we&#39;re already seeing tier 1<br \/>\nsuppliers and OEMs looking to replace this material in electrified<br \/>\nvehicles. Battery bus bars and charging cables are moving toward<br \/>\naluminum in a cycle long known to the infrastructure-based use<br \/>\ncases. In those applications, a 4:1 price ratio will drive material<br \/>\nchanges to infrastructure builds, and vehicle-based applications<br \/>\nmay see a similar tipping point. Teardown services are identifying<br \/>\nimprovements in assembly and cost which come from this material<br \/>\nchange.<\/p>\n<p >The materials supply chain currently stands as the second major<br \/>\nblockade to mainstream battery electric vehicle adoption rates. The<br \/>\nmining sector faces a struggle to convince a widening ethical<br \/>\ninvestor base of its ESG credentials.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Investments and crossing the chasm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >Due to some investors holding back commitment to the mining<br \/>\nsector it has not yet garnered the investment required in mineral<br \/>\nexploration and extraction to support a mainstream transition to<br \/>\nelectric vehicles. For every voice proclaiming the future of<br \/>\nautomotive to be electric, there remains a chasm in investment<br \/>\nwhich bolsters the validity of Main Street hesitancy toward EV<br \/>\nadoption. While industry experts, business leaders and marketers<br \/>\nall point toward battery electric vehicles, mainstream consumers<br \/>\nhave yet to find the problem that electric vehicles solve in their<br \/>\ndaily lives.<\/p>\n<p >The timidity of institutional investors may come from the<br \/>\nrealities of EV adoption rates in the market &#8211; especially in North<br \/>\nAmerica. Or it may point to the difficulties in getting raw<br \/>\nmaterial markets to move forward &#8211; a task that takes decades of<br \/>\napprovals and remains highly sensitive to market demand.<\/p>\n<p >For instance, the chart below shows North American demand for<br \/>\naluminum &#8211; a standard ingredient for the battery to live on, but<br \/>\nalso a supply pinch point. Propulsion demand across multiple<br \/>\ncomponents shifts from the lower value castings of traditional<br \/>\nsystems towards extrusions, high-quality castings, and even foil<br \/>\nsheets. All these forms require aluminum with fewer impurities,<br \/>\nwhich influences scrap costs and may require dilution with<br \/>\nadditional primary aluminum.<\/p>\n<p >In 2023, the Platt&#39;s Aluminum Symposium noted that high-quality<br \/>\nsources of aluminum recycling such as beverage cans would not be<br \/>\nable to bridge the demand gaps for North America, and the latest<br \/>\ntrade deficit numbers reflect the accuracy of this prediction.<\/p>\n<p ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ihsmarkit.com\/www\/images\/0124\/ev-materials.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p >In primary markets there are still significant hurdles to<br \/>\novercome in popularizing the re-processing of bauxite residue, also<br \/>\nknown as red mud, and other mining waste to provide additional<br \/>\nmarket value with improved environmental impact. Low profit<br \/>\nmargins, long duration payback, high planning risk, and high<br \/>\nsensitivity to operational excellence may be why investors have not<br \/>\nsupported the minerals extraction market as much as may be<br \/>\nrequired. But it could also be baking in consumer-adoption<br \/>\nheadwinds. Research conducted by S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility in in 2023<br \/>\nfound expressed interest in refining tailings to extract high value<br \/>\nminerals while improving environmental <a id=\"_Int_sk69S0B0\" name=\"_Int_sk69S0B0\" style=\"position:absolute;visibility:hidden;\">&amp;lt;span\/&amp;gt;<\/a>stewardship, but voiced the difficulty in<br \/>\nfinding investors.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Country Risk Assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >In the last few years, several supply chain disruptions to major<br \/>\nmaterial sources have fundamentally changed the way OEMs evaluate<br \/>\nthe risk of accepting a new material within vehicles. And sometimes<br \/>\nthe causes of supply chain snarls are unusual. As an example,<br \/>\npreparations for the winter Olympics in Beijing, mainland China<br \/>\nresulted in shortages in Magnesium (due to power plants being<br \/>\nforced to close around the event to comply with tougher clean air<br \/>\nrules which caused a reduction in smelting capacity). This<br \/>\nillustrated how the reliance on a single city for 80% of the global<br \/>\nsupply of a commodity could result in shortfalls &#8211; causing<br \/>\nsuppliers to frantically hunt for recycled materials.<\/p>\n<p >Regional sourcing of materials such as Nickel, Manganese and<br \/>\nCobalt have become more sensitized within OEMs. Some companies have<br \/>\nsigned <a id=\"_Int_D2xAwxz5\" name=\"_Int_D2xAwxz5\" style=\"position:absolute;visibility:hidden;\">&amp;lt;span\/&amp;gt;<\/a>ESG<br \/>\ndeclarations regarding the origin of their material sourcing, to<br \/>\navoid the brand-damaging effects of societal risks associated with<br \/>\ncertain regions of production. Best-in-class materials may be<br \/>\nreplaced by &#8220;best in risk aversion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p >Despite the sometimes cumbersome decision-making processes at<br \/>\nOEMs, alignment of cost and risk reduction can move quickly. With<br \/>\nthe recent graphite shortfall of the battery industry, supply chain<br \/>\nlocalization efforts are looking further into the raw material<br \/>\nsourcing strategies to ensure risk is minimized.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>ESG and Sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >For most people in business, &#8220;sustainability&#8221; usually concerns<br \/>\nthe longevity of financials, product performance, and the reduction<br \/>\nof waste within systems. Messaging around sustainability has, in<br \/>\nsome circles, become equivalent to carbon accounting.<\/p>\n<p >Performance of materials in real-world conditions will be<br \/>\ncontrasted with marketing messages and idealistic scenarios. For<br \/>\nengineers being asked to improve recycled material content in<br \/>\ncomponents, reduce carbon footprint, or integrate biomaterials into<br \/>\ntheir components, the task is typically associated with cost<br \/>\nneutrality. But with the current macroeconomic conditions,<br \/>\nautomotive product portfolios, and changing optics of high-level<br \/>\ninitiatives, sustainability may evolve toward its initial<br \/>\ndefinition of overall environmental responsibility.<\/p>\n<p >OEMs in Europe are currently working to meet recycled material<br \/>\ncontent regulatory requirements prior to formal approval. However,<br \/>\nthere are major problems with the incumbent regulations from the<br \/>\nperspective of OEMs and material suppliers.<\/p>\n<p >The EU mandate of recycled content is not a fine-based system,<br \/>\nbut rather a compliance-based metric which will determine whether a<br \/>\nvehicle can be sold in the region. In cases of fine-based systems,<br \/>\nOEMs can tolerate a blended changeover plan whereby they may inch<br \/>\ntoward compliance within a regulatory framework while accepting the<br \/>\nincreased cost of doing business in the short term. However, in<br \/>\nthis case, any vehicle with less than 25% recycled plastic will not<br \/>\nbe permitted for sale in the EU market.<\/p>\n<p >Component engineers are looking to their suppliers for recycled<br \/>\ncontent which can be quickly integrated into existing vehicles &#8211;<br \/>\nand this is a main friction point in the materials industry.<br \/>\nChemical companies have existing recycled content compounds<br \/>\navailable for commercial use, but they have not made it through<br \/>\nvalidation processes.<\/p>\n<p >It&#39;s possible the OEMs have not allocated enough budget for<br \/>\nthese extensive and costly recertification processes, based on<br \/>\nS&amp;amp;P Global Mobility research within the supply base. One<br \/>\ncomponent redesign researched was in the budget range of $50-80<br \/>\nMillion, and these activities have slowed due to budgets being<br \/>\nreallocated to battery system development, according to the<br \/>\nsupplier. Additionally, S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility has learned that<br \/>\nthese material suppliers are highly reluctant to invest in new<br \/>\nprocessing systems that allow for integration of post-consumer<br \/>\nwaste into the feedstock. Although it is a state-of-the-art<br \/>\nprocess, many of these publicly-traded suppliers are risking<br \/>\nprofitability in the process.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Fully loaded or decontented?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >While materials can be a geopolitical and regulatory risk, there<br \/>\nare unsung benefits of proper material selection when evaluated<br \/>\nfrom a bottom-up perspective.<\/p>\n<p >Some groups view material selection as infrastructure: If it<br \/>\nworks, a company will only invest the amount needed to keep the<br \/>\nwheels rolling. For others, material selection is the tip of the<br \/>\ninnovation spear affecting customers directly. Use cases of<br \/>\nvehicles are the ultimate group of demographics, intersectionality,<br \/>\nand practicality.<\/p>\n<p >Automakers make big investments in tactile surfaces, but<br \/>\ndecontenting a vehicle with the removal of items such as carpet, or<br \/>\nusing cloth or exposed non-woven surfaces, may produce a vehicle<br \/>\nthat gives the impression of rugged luxury. For another consumer,<br \/>\nseeing a vehicle with an eco-conscious pledge of zero landfill<br \/>\nwaste, biopolymer use, or metrics reflecting the amount of recycled<br \/>\ncontent, may align with their core values and emotional sentiment<br \/>\nof why they purchase the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Materials priorities in the supply chain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p >So, are materials considered as infrastructure or innovation?<br \/>\nBoth definitions are correct. Raw materials support the systems<br \/>\ngroups formally labeled as infrastructure, possibly putting<br \/>\nminerals as the grandparents to these systems.<\/p>\n<p >OEMs have attempted to secure the expansion portfolios in<br \/>\nlithium, foreseeing an undersupply of this mineral in comparison<br \/>\nwith their product plans. However, this is not the only at-risk<br \/>\nmaterial for OEMs, as geopolitical, compliance, and market<br \/>\nsentiment are dictating different terms. OEMs need to bring raw<br \/>\nmaterial supply chains back toward assembly plants, improve the<br \/>\nmaterial&#39;s internal visibility, and keep inflationary pricing in<br \/>\ncheck.<\/p>\n<p >The automotive industry is no stranger to complex systems,<br \/>\nlogistical sensitivities, or even vertical integration. Many of the<br \/>\nstated goals for OEMs are currently competing for budget, talent,<br \/>\nand marketing attention.<\/p>\n<p >2024 may show the priorities of OEMs in a competitive goals<br \/>\nenvironment, whereby single-metric grading scales are no longer<br \/>\nappropriate methods of gauging their market performance. Some<br \/>\nstretch goals of corporate performance may focus on core value<br \/>\npropositions, consumer needs, and profitability.
