What I suspected was the case with the\u00a0Toyota GR Yaris<\/a>\u00a0has turned out to be about right.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no wonder I\u2019ve had correspondence from people with big car collections who drive a Yaris every day,\u201d I wrote in 2021 after spending a few months living with one and finding that it offered a driving experience so special that it would please people who could afford rather more than the \u00a329,995 the hot hatchback cost.<\/p>\n

And last month,\u00a0Toyota<\/a>\u00a0presented me with some data backing that up: 48% of GR Yaris owners own one as an \u2018additional car\u2019, when the class average is only around 10%.<\/p>\n

Many have a GR Yaris \u201cnext to a supercar\u201d, said a delighted chief engineer Naohiko Saito. \u201cThis is something we\u2019ve never seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given this, and that Toyota has sold 100% more GRs than it had expected to by now, it\u2019s little wonder that it has felt emboldened not only to put the car through a facelift but to suggest that it will make it a permanent fixture in the range \u2013 for as long as it\u2019s still able to sell it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t the end of development,\u201d said Saito at the event where I drove a pre-production example of the facelifted car.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmells and noise are something we don\u2019t want to give up. We want to make sports cars for the next 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the end of this decade, though, 80% of new cars sold in the UK must be zero-emissions, and while it has only a 1.6-litre engine, the GR Yaris isn\u2019t one of those.<\/p>\n

Still, I live in hope of a long existence \u2013 and that Toyota resists the temptation to hike the price too much, now that it knows the wherewithal of many buyers.<\/p>\n

More excitable quotes, although less happy ones, come from ABC News in Canberra. The Street Machine Summernats car event has come to town, and with it has come \u201cmoron tourism\u201d, according to Mark Richardson, Australian Capital Territory\u2019s acting inspector of road policing.<\/p>\n

Australia has some strict anti-hooning laws \u2013 hooning being the word for \u201cany antisocial behaviour in a motor car\u201d, according to the authorities \u2013 but they don\u2019t dissuade semi-organised burnout events.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe real car enthusiasts aren\u2019t the problem,\u201d said Richardson. (I\u2019d like to think those are people like me and you.) \u201cIf we set up an IQ [testing] station at the [state] border instead of a vehicle testing station, we\u2019d probably halve our problem. They literally come down here to see \u2018how big of a pest can I be this week?\u2019.<\/p>\n

“They were all over Canberra [this week] and we were just playing whack-a-mole.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery jurisdiction in Australia has been through this. It\u2019s not unique to us and it\u2019s not unique to the Summernats; it happens all year round. [Hooners] just haven\u2019t evolved very far; they\u2019ve just plateaued as a sub-species of the human race. I don\u2019t know what goes through their minds.\u201d<\/p>\n

I know, Mark, I know. And yet\u2026 As somebody who is partial to a burnout or a drift, I wonder: is a hoon still a hoon if nobody\u2019s around to see it?<\/p>\n

Is it antisocial if you\u2019re sufficiently antisocial as to want to hide away from society anyway?<\/p>\n

Visible hoonage gets my goat like it does Richardson\u2019s. It\u2019s why I dislike most noisy, showoff-ish supercar events, where bad, loud, obnoxious driving (and owners) are prevalent.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s why I think most recreational driving (or motorbike riding) is best done alone and why it\u2019s better to assume that anybody who might see you also has a camera aimed at you.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy enough to find appropriate space, even in England, where there are 1124 people per square mile. In Australia, there are just 9.1. Hooners there literally have to go looking for bystanders. Personally, I think it\u2019s much better to drive where people are not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
