President Ronald Reagan took his second oath of office in 1985, the same year Coke changed its formula and Bruce Springsteen sang, \u201cBorn in the U.S.A.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The year also delivered an embarrassment of pop-culture riches.<\/p>\n

Hit after hit. Franchise starter after franchise starter. And the movie that turned a \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d alum into Hollywood\u2019s most bankable comedian.<\/p>\n

Here, in no particular order, are the top movies from 1985.<\/p>\n

Back to the Future<\/h2>\n

Few films flirt with pop culture perfection quite like this time-travel romp. Marty McFly\u2019s trip to his parent\u2019s teen years inspired a hugely popular trilogy, made Michael J. Fox a superstar and remains a film no sane soul seriously wants to reboot.<\/p>\n

Phew.<\/p>\n

Director Robert Zemeckis recalled in 2013 that \u201ceverybody rejected\u201d the original film’s screenplay, but he instinctively knew how special it was at the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery line of dialogue, every beat, every cut, every shot is doing what movies are supposed to do, which is propelling the plot or establishing character.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mask<\/h2>\n

This tender tale often gets overlooked in our chronic \u201880s nostalgia. That\u2019s a mistake given the work of both Cher and Eric Stolz as the lad with the curious \u201cmask.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stolz stars as \u201cRocky,\u201d a teen suffering from a rare, disfiguring disorder that can\u2019t camouflage his lust for life. Cher plays his intense Mama, a woman surrounded by gruff but caring bikers (including Sam Elliott).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a beautiful story that demands a delicate touch, something director Peter Bogdanovich said happened despite his leading lady<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can\u2019t act \u2026 she won Best Actress at Cannes because I shot her very well. And she can\u2019t sustain a scene. She couldn\u2019t do what Tatum [O\u2019Neal] did in Paper Moon. She\u2019d start off in the right direction, but she\u2019d go off wrong somehow, very quickly. So I shot a lot of close-ups of her because she\u2019s very good in close-ups. Her eyes have the sadness of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lost in America<\/h2>\n

Nest. egg.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all you need to hear and suddenly you\u2019re on the road with Albert Brooks<\/a> and Julie Hagerty in this comedy classic. They play a couple eager to live off the grid when Hagerty\u2019s character blows their life savings in one ill-advised gambling jaunt.<\/p>\n

Brooks\u2019s subsequent meltdown, like the film itself, remains a classic movie moment. The comedy giant said 1968\u2019s \u201cEasy Rider\u201d inadvertently inspired his comedy. He wanted to show the pragmatic side of checking out of society and living on your own terms.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought it would be funny to have a story about dropping out and dropping in two weeks later,\u201d he said in grand spoiler-alert fashion.<\/p>\n

Fletch<\/h2>\n

He\u2019s Chevy Chase, and we\u2019re not.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s no comedy that captured Chase\u2019s confidence than this Michael Ritchie romp. The first screen iteration of Gregory Mcdonald\u2019s \u201cFletch\u201d book series hit the bullseye, and it proved darn near impossible to replicate.<\/p>\n

The 1990 sequel \u201cFletch Lives\u201d is now “problematic” to the core, but even then it lacked the spark of the source material. Jon Hamm\u2019s take on Irwin Fletcher proved better than anyone expected<\/a>, and it took a box office swan dive in 2022.<\/p>\n

Chase jokingly admitted the character proved the closest to the real actor<\/a>, and there\u2019s some truth to it given his deadpan interviews and inscrutable off-screen image.<\/p>\n

Rocky IV<\/h2>\n

The fourth \u201cRocky\u201d film may be the most unabashedly patriotic movie of the decade, and that includes 1984\u2019s \u201cRed Dawn.\u201d Sylvester Stallone<\/a> wrote, directed and starred as the Italian Stallion, this time taking on the pride of the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War.<\/p>\n

Would any star attempt anything like that today? Cue the neon light screaming, \u201cthat\u2019s rhetorical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stallone\u2019s love for his country remains pure, but in this 1985 sequel he proved he could marry it with yet another underdog saga. How could anyone stand up to Ivan Drago, who was both mountain and machine as played by Dolph Lundgren?<\/p>\n

One particularly brutal fight sequence sent Stallone to the hospital<\/a>, and he spent four days in intensive care before he resumed filming.<\/p>\n

The Sure Thing<\/h2>\n

Rob Reiner\u2019s directorial hot streak may never be duplicated. \u201cThis Is Spinal Tap.\u201d \u201cStand By Me.\u201d \u201cThe Princess Bride.\u201d \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally…\u201d \u201cMisery.\u201d \u201cA Few Good Men.\u201d Few people talk about his 1985 comedy starring John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga as the unlikeliest couple around.<\/p>\n

This sweet rom-com pairs the squabbling pair on a road trip to California where Cusack\u2019s Walter \u201cGib\u201d Gibson hopes to meet a sexual \u201csure thing,\u201d played by Nicollette Sheridan.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s bittersweet, funny and brimming with memorable moments. The film\u2019s finale, set in an English classroom, is perfection.<\/p>\n

Cusack later praised Reiner\u2019s intimate direction, but it came with a well-meaning caveat<\/a> about their \u201cSure Thing\u201d collaboration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe great thing about Rob was that he was an actor. So he knew exactly what actors need \u2014 they need momentum, they need to concentrate, they need to feel safe. He zealously guards actors. So as a 17-year-old kid, I was like, \u2018Oh wow, this is how it\u2019s going to be on all movies.\u2019 Rob ruined me for other directors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Better Off Dead<\/h2>\n

\u201cI want my two dollars…\u201d<\/p>\n

This black comedy follows a hapless teen (Cusack, again) dead set on suicide after his vapid girlfriend ditches him for a skiing champion. \u201cSavage\u201d Steve Holland\u2019s blend of \u201880s schmaltz, irreverent animation and wacky side characters is as infectious today as it was in 1985.<\/p>\n

Holland said he was told the movie tested through the roof<\/a>, but the film\u2019s box office returns were modest at best.<\/p>\n

No matter. Time has only been kind to the film, with its iconic scenes and catch phrases cemented in pop culture lore.<\/p>\n

Fright Night<\/h2>\n

The love director Tom Holland shows for vampire movies, from the film itself to the films within a film starring the great Peter Vincent, is all you need to know about this \u201880s gem.<\/p>\n

A solid William Ragsdale plays Charlie, an Everyteen who suspects his new neighbor is a bloodsucker. Good instincts. The horror-comedy elixir is near-perfect, as are Roddy McDowall as the washed-up movie star and Chris Sarandon’s fiendish neighbor.<\/p>\n

The practical effects can be clunky, but everything else runs like clockwork.<\/p>\n

Holland\u2019s success writing the shockingly good sequel to \u201cPsycho\u201d<\/a> gave him the industry clout to get \u201cFright Night\u201d made.<\/p>\n

The writer\/director says the personal approach he brought to the material<\/a> made all the difference.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was writing about the movies that I loved when I was 15, 16, 17, and they were the AIP and Hammer Horror films, which starred Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Vincent Price… that\u2019s how you get Peter Vincent, the horror movie host.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Breakfast Club<\/h2>\n

John Hughes didn\u2019t own the \u201880s. He just made the decade better, funnier and wiser.<\/p>\n

This ode to high school detention gathered five \u201ctypes\u201d for an afternoon they\u2019d never forget. What works? Well, everything:<\/p>\n
