His backstory explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\" class=\"type:primaryImage\" src=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Design-sem-nome-2024-01-23T110938.797.png\"><\/div>\n<p>At the beginning of the year countless people across the world saw the shocking courtroom recording of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tag\/deobra-redden\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deobra Redden<\/a><\/strong> throwing himself over Judge Mary Kay Holthus\u2019 podium and attacking her.<\/p>\n<p>Redden launched himself over the bench when Judge Holthus refused his plea for probation. Claiming she couldn\u2019t \u201cwith that history,\u201d the Judge began reading <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/news\/how-many-years-in-prison-was-deobra-redden-the-man-who-attacked-a-las-vegas-judge-sentenced-to\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his sentence<\/a>, and Redden pounced. This viral moment got Redden dubbed on the media and internet as the \u201cflying felon.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A judge has been attacked by a defendant in a &#39;felony battery&#39; case who jumped across the bench when she was sentencing him to prison.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant, Deobra Delone Redden, was wrestled to the floor behind the bench by several court and jail officials <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/14.0.0\/72x72\/1f517.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd17\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XE7WYkAKAE\">https:\/\/t.co\/XE7WYkAKAE<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tatH8sIZ9D\">pic.twitter.com\/tatH8sIZ9D<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sky News (@SkyNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkyNews\/status\/1742805534787375453?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 4, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But some questions remain for a lot of people: Who is Deobra Redden? Is he just a violent and irrational person by nature who should remain locked up for a long time for the public\u2019s safety? Before his most recent and notorious offense, he already had a few felonies on his record \u2014 one of his prior charges being Domestic Battery in the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> degree.<\/p>\n<p>But most of what we know of his actual background comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_XVe1-4f3Mw&amp;t=140s\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the interview with his sister and foster mother<\/a>. Both believe that the system has failed Redden, and that\u2019s what he himself feels.<\/p>\n<p>His sister explained the conditions Redden was born into were not the best, as he was born with crack cocaine in his system. His foster mother got him, along with his siblings, from the foster care system at 12 years old. Even then, his foster mother was told that he was \u201cseverely emotionally disturbed.\u201d On top of that, Redden has a schizophrenia and bipolar disorder diagnosis, for which he\u2019s now taking medication in jail.<\/p>\n<p>When he was 18, he left the house and \u201cbranched out on his own.\u201d He\u2019d been released from prison about 6 weeks before the attack on Judge Holthus. According to his foster mother, he\u2019d got an apartment, was in contact with parole and probation officers, and was, overall, \u201cdoing everything right.\u201d She also said that Redden, \u201cin his mind,\u201d was counting on showing up to work the following day, not going back to prison. With this, Redden\u2019s foster mom corroborates what he was telling Judge Holthus about being \u201cin a better place\u201d right before the attack.<\/p>\n<p>His mother also explained that he had not slept well the night before seeing Judge Holthus, and was \u201chearing voices\u201d that day. Both family members believe that he \u201csnapped.\u201d The two defend that he\u2019s a good and kind person at heart and that, ideally, he should be in a mental facility getting help for his illnesses and not in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Redden&#8217;s preliminary hearing on the new charges is scheduled for Feb. 14.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in the mood for more true crime, check out <a
