It\u2019s a question that speaks to his growing apathy toward modern films and concerns over the \u201cwoke\u201d-ification of Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>The scribe behind \u201cBustin\u2019 Loose,\u201d \u201cScenes from a Mall\u201d and his Oscar-nominated \u201cEnemies: A Love Story\u201d told the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.chtbl.com\/B_eXGtZK\"  rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood in Toto Podcast<\/a> what he thinks of the year\u2019s biggest hits;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/barbie-movie-review-woke\/\">Barbie<\/a>\u201d \u2013 \u201cCute, but too long\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/oppenheimer-movie-communism\/\">Oppenheimer<\/a>\u201d \u2013 \u201cA very impressive piece of work \u2026 but what was it, really?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The film that grabbed him more than any other last year? \u201cIt Ain\u2019t Over,\u201d the heartfelt documentary on Yankees legend Yogi Berra, executive produced by the slugger&#8217;s granddaughter, Lindsay Berra.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/roger-l-simon-whats-missing-in-movies-interview\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FXGvXOjD6zQ8%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Video\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What \u201cOppenheimer\u201d lacked, says Simon, is something too many movies today don\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the \u201cWhy.<\/p>\n<p>The Berra documentary? That&#8217;s a different story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember this man as one of the icons of my youth,&#8221; Simon said. &#8220;But I didn&#8217;t realize what a stupendous person he was. And this documentary that was made by his granddaughter, this had emotional heft, because it was made by a young woman who loved and adored her grandfather and wished us to get that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon remains one of the rare, openly conservative storytellers in the entertainment field. His resume packs a punch, starting with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0800363\/?ref_=tt_ov_wr\"  rel=\"noopener\">Hollywood credits<\/a> and expanding through his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/series\/86198-moses-wine\"  rel=\"noopener\">Moses Wine detective series<\/a>. He also co-founded PJ Media (formerly Pajamas Media) and served on the faculties for The Sundance Institute and the American Film Institute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His writings have appeared in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and, now, The Epoch Times. You want the human spirit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire vowed to deliver just that with movies like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/terror-on-the-prairie-montana-shoot\/\">Terror on the Prairie<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/shut-in-review-daily-wire\/\">Shut In<\/a>.\u201d The company\u2019s most recent film, the comedic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/lady-ballers-review-boreing-daily-wire\/\">Lady Ballers<\/a>,\u201d is a salvo in the ongoing culture wars, but it\u2019s not technically political.<\/p>\n<p>How would Simon advise a company like The Daily Wire or The Blaze as they steer resources into original stories?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s all about the script. It&#8217;s always all about the script.
