Hello folks, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time. Today we\u2019re returning to BanG Dream! It\u2019s MyGO!!!!!, for the very simple reason that I cannot wait another moment to find out what happens to these goddamn teenagers. MyGO was riveting enough as a richly characterized drama about pulling a mismatched group of musicians together, but now that Soyo is threatening to destroy the group, it has become a truly un-put-downable page-turner. Tomori is in despair, Anon is blaming herself, Taki is ready to throw hands, and Raana is\u2026 well, probably enjoying a parfait somewhere, blissfully unaware of the maelstrom spinning overhead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Raana aside, Sakiko\u2019s unambiguous denial of any CRYCHIC reunion has laid bare the insecurities and deceptions undergirding our group\u2019s sunny surface. Anon finds herself facing the precise combination of disconnects that prompted her to flee home from England: an inability to keep up with the group\u2019s technical ability and a failure to parse the \u201clanguage,\u201d here articulated as the unspoken bond of the former CRYCHIC members. Tomori has discovered that Soyo is just like all the others, smiling to her face while secretly engineering ways to avoid her discomforting presence. Taki is once again grasping at straws, seeking a closeness with Tomori that she can only articulate as misdirected anger and redoubled physical commitment. And Soyo might be unhappiest of all, having resigned herself to the superficial high school experience and false smiles that Anon once saw as her only future. It\u2019s an absolute mess at the moment, but such frictions often force us to be our best; when we cannot abide our current circumstances, we have nothing to lose, allowing us to fling ourselves bravely towards a better future. Let\u2019s see how our band fares!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Episode 10<\/b><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Saturated sunlight and extreme closeups provide the perfect aesthetic compliment to a day that feels too bright, too close, too intense and immediate to bear. The shots echo Taki\u2019s feelings, as she tells Umiri that the band is finished. The one who was most dedicated, most invested in this group has given up – what else is left for them now?<\/span><\/p>\n

Over at the academy, Mutsumi observes as Soyo continues to engage lightly with her superficial school friends. All Soyo is doing is mirroring and validating – she just echoes what the other girls say back to them, sometimes complemented by an \u201coh, is that so?\u201d She\u2019s even better than Anon at directing the conversations and relationships of proximity that often define high school, wherein you simply make nice with the classmates around you rather than developing any deeper, genuinely vulnerable bonds<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlways Lost\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Tomori is wandering the streets in a stupor while muttering to herself. Things are going great!<\/span><\/p>\n

The compositions emphasize corner mirrors and power lines, symbols that are often used to evoke a sense of anonymity and dislocation within a world of secret symbols. This worked quite well for a story like Serial Experiments Lain, and also fits for Tomori\u2019s perception of the world, wherein everyone else seems to be sharing a common language<\/span><\/p>\n

Her return to school is framed through the glass windows of the classroom, again emphasizing a sense of dislocation, as if the things happening around her seem muffled or far away. Right on cue, she reflects on how she can\u2019t cry, can\u2019t seem to emote like she\u2019s \u201csupposed\u201d to<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how to express these things, but I want to really talk about them.\u201d She instead returns to writing her thoughts in her journal, the potential genesis of another song, another scream from her heart<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just know I must have made a mistake somewhere. That\u2019s how it always is.\u201d Ah, it\u2019s so heartbreaking. The dissolution of this new band was in no way her fault, but of course she\u2019d internalize it as a repeat of her prior failed friendships – she did something wrong and made the others uncomfortable, just like with her bugs back on the playground, but she has no idea what her crime actually was. Tomori\u2019s characterization is truly wonderful – the show emphasizes how she processes things differently, but that ultimately reflects how she feels the same desire for belonging and hurt of abandonment as anyone<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And so she retreats back to her astronomy club. \u201cI couldn\u2019t become human\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet, even for all this despair, Tomori just can\u2019t help but stumble into new meet-cute scenarios with every girl in the city. At the planetarium, she ends up falling into a steamy locking of eyes with a girl whose recliner is stuck<\/span><\/p>\n

The girl catches up with her afterwards, asking why she looked like she was about to cry<\/span><\/p>\n

She breaks the ice by reflecting on the north star, a common interest that prompts Tomori to point out the visible constellations<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you sing, it feels like it reaches people, huh?\u201d Who <\/span>is<\/span><\/i> this mysterious woman, and why does she seem to already know Tomori\u2019s whole deal?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope your feelings get through.\u201d Having imparted this fateful advice, she wanders away, presumably walking into the sky\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tomori asks Anon to perform her new song live with her, but Anon asks \u201cwhat about Soyo\u201d and leaves, clearly still feeling burned by her realization that everyone else was essentially using her<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And so Tomori decides to perform alone at RiNG, having accept that the stage is the only place she can express her feelings honestly, by shepherding her loose thoughts into the shape of a song<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh my god Raana. She is of course off by the snack table, staring down a particularly tantalizing pastry. Also very cat-like in this aspect, saying \u201cI won\u2019t eat it\u201d and then immediately chomping it. Cats are not very convincing or patient liars<\/span><\/p>\n

Tomori faces the crowd alone in a darkened room. It seems like it might be uniquely unnerving, but this is really how performance has always been for Tomori – every time she\u2019s been expressing her deepest emotions with total sincerity, and every time she\u2019s been unsure how they\u2019ll be received until the performance is over, by either the audience or her own bandmates. At least this time, with no one beside her, there\u2019s no one to abandon her<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce, there were people who sang with me. I destroyed it all.\u201d Aw, Tomori<\/span><\/p>\n

Of all people, it\u2019s Raana who\u2019s the first bandmate to hear her, her mouth still stuffed from the craft table<\/span><\/p>\n

And with Tomori once again proving herself an Interesting Woman, Raana plugs in and offers her a backing melody, again turning Tomori\u2019s confessional segues into songs of their own<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven if this voice grows hoarse and thin, until the moment this song reaches you I\u2019m determined to keep singing it.\u201d Tomori! What an act of strength and bravery for her – the one who was hit hardest by the breakup of each band, the one who most relied on that sanctuary of understanding. Even so, she\u2019s determined to stay strong for the others, to hold a beacon until they return<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cTomori\u2019s been performing live. Sometimes there\u2019s a girl on guitar.\u201d Of course Raana would just wander on stage whenever she happens to be in the venue already<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI guess she really doesn\u2019t need me after all.\u201d Anon takes this as further confirmation she was only ever an accessory, never an essential part of the band. She stares down at her fingers as she says this, the camera emphasizing all the work she put into the band through the bandaids covering her fingers – a symbol of both her genuine dedication to guitar and her initial, bandaid-initiated friendship with Tomori<\/span><\/p>\n

Nice guitar riff playing behind this process of reconciliation – it\u2019s very close to the melody of \u201cToday\u201d by the Smashing Pumpkins, with both riffs evoking a sense of optimism and wide-open potential<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Raana grabs Taki in the middle of her shift, demanding she play drums. Funny how the one with the least emotional commitment to the band is the one dragging them back together – she has no emotional hangups regarding reuniting with this group, so she\u2019s just gonna carry them into the same room by force<\/span><\/p>\n

Nice smirk from Raana as she gestures towards the drums, a clear \u201cyou know you want to\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As far as band reunion tours go, this is a very dramatic concept<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Obviously plenty of precedent for this band plus spoken word arrangement, as well. That\u2019s basically what Craig Finn does with The Hold Steady, and of course, Slint\u2019s seminal Spiderland basically helped birth post-rock, along with being a stunning expression of musical emotion in its own right. The climax of Good Morning, Captain is one of the most raw expressions of longing through music I\u2019ve ever experienced – I feel very privileged that I got to see them perform it live, back at the first Pitchfork festival in Chicago<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter hearing your song, I understand.\u201d Taki confesses her understanding to Tomori on the rooftop where Soyo once urged her to, now with the specter of CRYCHIC at last behind them<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And then Mutsumi appears, asking what they\u2019ll do about Soyo<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow is Soyo?\u201d \u201cSoyo\u2026 doesn\u2019t know anymore.\u201d A very sharp way to put it. Soyo has relinquished her own desires entirely, and now exists only as a mirror of the superficial social experiences she\u2019s embraced. The only honest desire Soyo ever embraced was her desire to play with Sakiko, and with that possibility denied to her, she\u2019s back to echoing the desires of her mother, her peers, anyone who will give her some form of direction<\/span><\/p>\n

Tomori now tries a new tactic with Anon: pouring out her heart, and admitting she absolutely needs her to play guitar. Anon was being stubborn to avoid being hurt again, but it\u2019s hard to say no to Tomori when she\u2019s like this<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Like most people, Anon also sees others as fundamentally pretty much like herself, meaning she assumes Tomori is simply telling her what she wants to hear – after all, that\u2019s what Anon does most of the time. But Tomori has a famously terrible ability to tell others what they want to hear – she tells them the truth, whether that truth will bind them together or split them apart. Anon needs to realize that when Tomori says she\u2019s relying on her, she really, really means it<\/span><\/p>\n

Confronted by this raw display of emotion, Anon performs her signature trick and books it the fuck out of there<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not like I actually wanted to do it.\u201d Caught vulnerable and ashamed, Anon reverts back to her original motivation, her early desire to simply look good among her band-obsessed schoolmates. Anon found a genuine sense of community and belonging with Tomori, but having been informed that her bandmates were actually faking their friendship, she\u2019d rather push back or lash out than risk further rejection and embarrassment. The Soyo reveal seems to have hit her particularly hard – she really thought the two of them had become meaningful friends<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnon-chan, you were struggling with all your might. So was Soyo. So was I. Because we\u2019re all lost.\u201d Tomori won\u2019t let go of the sincere fear Anon shared with her<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s be lost together.\u201d Damn, what a line<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, man.\u201d I love how Anon always accompanies moments of massive emotional transformation with these fatigued asides. Her \u201chuh\u201d when Soyo broke her heart was a similarly understated expression of her whole world changing<\/span><\/p>\n

And so it is Anon who actually goes to recruit Soyo, determined to prove their bond was real<\/span><\/p>\n

Soyo even lives on the top floor of her apartment, high in a tower separated from all her fellow students<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s zero signs that anyone lives here at all.\u201d Soyo at home is undefined, a mirror with nothing to reflect<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cThis aroma\u2026 this is what we both drank the first time we met.\u201d And yet Anon knows Soyo has preferences, even if it\u2019s just the tea she drinks<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI heard everything. It made me angry, but it also made me think \u2018I guess Soyo-san is human, too.\u2019\u201d In an odd way, Soyo\u2019s betrayal of Anon actually brought them closer, as it at least demonstrated Soyo\u2019s true, selfish feelings<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re different from how you appear. You tell tons of lies. And there\u2019s a part of you that\u2019s kind of malicious, right?\u201d Anon actually likes the real Soyo<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally able to speak honestly, Anon almost immediately instigates a fight with Soyo<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

At Tomori\u2019s next concert, Anon is ready on guitar. Seeing Soyo in the audience, Tomori rushes to her and physically drags her on-stage. If Soyo isn\u2019t capable of defining herself, her bandmates are perfectly happy to assure her that this is who she is<\/span><\/p>\n

Anon helps her with her bass strap, giving her a gentle caress as she does so. She truly understands Soyo, and sympathizes entirely with her desire to flee from this pain<\/span><\/p>\n

Aw jeez, this performance. Everyone charges forward with tears in their eyes, Tomori singing not to an external audience, but right towards the bandmates she treasures. Like a painful reprise of the opening song, with the same spinning camerawork, but this time focused on the band sharing their pain through music, each gathering strength from the tears of the others<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to sing together. I want to laugh together. Even if our paths only run parallel.\u201d A wonderful articulation of the adjacent but never-touching closeness their group embodied<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And Done<\/b><\/p>\n

My god, what a performance, what an episode! MyGO just casually tosses off another all-timer, a scream of longing shared by every member of this ramshackle band. It was wonderful to see each of Tomori\u2019s bandmates return and affirm their bonds in their own ways: Raana seeing the spark recaptured, Taki swift to apologize for misunderstanding Tomori, Anon reaffirming her status as a fellow lost soul, and Soyo dragged kicking and screaming into emotional vulnerability. Anon and Soyo already seem like far stronger friends now that they\u2019ve each dispensed with the niceties, though of course it took Tomori\u2019s cry of the heart to make them truly admit their feelings. What a passionate mess of a band they\u2019ve made!<\/span><\/p>\n
