According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN<\/mark><\/a>, Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid will undergo surgery on his left knee to address a meniscus injury.<\/p>\n

Embiid is expected to miss an extended period of time, but the reigning MVP could play again this season. <\/p>\n

“Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid — the reigning league MVP — will undergo a procedure to address a left meniscus injury in the coming days, the team announced on Sunday night, and the ‘door isn’t closed’ on a return this season, sources told ESPN,” Woj wrote. “Embiid is expected to miss an extended period of time, but a more precise timeline isn’t expected until doctors complete the procedure, sources said.”<\/p>\n

Embiid is averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.8 blocks this season while shooting 53.3% from the field, 36.6% from beyond the arc and 88.3% from the free-throw line. He leads the NBA in points per game. <\/p>\n

Embiid will not win his second MVP this season since he will fall short of the NBA’s 65-game minimum to earn postseason awards. The future Hall of Famer has been dealing with left knee soreness all season, according to NBA insider Sam Amick of The Athletic<\/mark><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Embiid missed the first two years of his career with foot issues. He’s had several knee injuries in his career before this latest injury. <\/p>\n

The Sixers are 30-18. They are in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. If Embiid doesn’t return for the 2024 playoffs, Philadelphia will not compete for a title. <\/p>\n
