Quarkus, established in 2020, claims 493bhp per tonne from its four-cylinder P3 sports car<\/p>\n

French start-up Quarkus, established in November 2020, has announced it will enter a modified version of its P3 sports car<\/a> in this year\u2019s Pikes Peak International\u00a0Hill Climb.<\/p>\n

The P3 is a mid-engined two-seater claimed by its maker to have been developed entirely in-house.<\/p>\n

It’s underpinned by a carbonfibre chassis and is powered by a mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine of indeterminate capacity, said to produce 296bhp.<\/p>\n

The entire package weighs 600kg, giving the car a power-to-weight ratio of 493bhp per tonne \u2013 higher than the\u00a0Porsche 911 GT3 RS<\/a> (357bhp per tonne) but\u00a0below the plug-in hybrid Ferrari 296 GTB<\/a> (557bhp per tonne).<\/p>\n

A multi-year testing programme began last month at Circuit des Ecuyers, located between Paris and Reims in France, and it has since completed another session at P\u00f4le M\u00e9canique Al\u00e8s C\u00e9vennes\u00a0near Montpellier.<\/p>\n

Its first real trial, however, will come in Colorado, the US,\u00a0in June. It will be piloted by test driver Bruce Jouanny, who has previously raced at Le Mans and in various touring car series.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe often hear about real-world testing, and you couldn’t dream of a better place to do that than Pikes Peak,\u201d said Jouanny. \u201cIt’s a road course\u00a0but with very specific constraints: the altitude, the bumps, the hairpin corners, along with fast sections, not to mention the drop-offs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quarkus’s goal doesn’t appear to be overall victory\u00a0but instead to accelerate the development of the P3, which is scheduled\u00a0to enter production in 2026.<\/p>\n

Founder Damien Alfano said in a statement: \u201cTo take on Pikes Peak\u00a0while the first development prototype has just been presented\u00a0is clearly not a reasonable idea. No constructor does that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said it’s instead\u00a0\u201c<\/span>an incredible\u00a0opportunity to boost the development of the Quarkus\u201d, with “<\/span>three months to complete what normally would take nine\u201d.<\/p>\n

The brand\u2019s entry will be supported by RD Limited, the motorsport outfit run by Pikes Peak regular (and fellow Frenchman)\u00a0Romain Dumas.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Dumas set the hillclimb\u2019s record time of 7min 57.148sec behind the wheel of the electric\u00a0Volkswagen ID R prototype<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
