A secret team of Ford engineers has been working for two years on a new platform for affordable electric cars<\/a>, company CEO Jim Farley has revealed.<\/p>\n

Speaking as the company released its fourth-quarter financial results for 2023, Farley said the company is \u201cadjusting our capital [investment], switching more focus onto smaller EV products\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThis is important because we made a bet in silence two years ago. We developed a super-talented skunkworks team to create a low-cost EV platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a small group, small team, some of the best EV engineers in the world, and it was separate from the Ford mothership. It was a start-up.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they’ve developed a flexible platform that will not only deploy to several types of vehicles but will be a large installed base for software and services that we’re now seeing at [Ford] Pro.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ford Pro is the company\u2019s stand-alone commercial vehicle division, responsible for models such as the Transit<\/a> and F-150<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Investment in higher-volume, lower-cost electric cars \u2013 likely destined to serve as indirect successors to the Fiesta<\/a> and Focus<\/a> \u2013 comes in response to Ford\u2019s finding that most buyers are unwilling to pay over the odds to go electric.<\/p>\n

Farley added that the availability of cheap credit pre-Covid and the pent-up demand for cars amid the semiconductor chip crisis, as well as the rapid rise in early adopters of EVs, \u201cgave us too optimistic\u00a0a demand signal\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This drove a \u201ctemporary spike in supply\u201d and Ford struggled to find buyers for the cars it had built\u00a0as it realised that \u2013 after the early EV adopters were on board \u2013 mainstream buyers were not prepared to pay a premium to go electric.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Covid shock retreated, we learned that as you scale EVs to 5000-7000 units a month and you move into the [majority of customers], they are not willing to pay a significant premium for EVs,\u201d said Farley.<\/p>\n

He hailed an impending \u201chuge moment\u201d, pointing to the rate at which prices of hybrids and electric cars are aligning in the US, once EV subsidies are factored into the equation.<\/p>\n

US president Joe Biden\u2019s Inflation Reduction Act last year introduced a $7500 (\u00a36000) tax credit toward the purchase of an electric car. From this year, qualifying cars\u2019 batteries must not use components sourced from \u2018a foreign entity of concern\u2019, which includes China and Russia.<\/p>\n

The Ford Mustang Mach-E<\/a> has become ineligible, owing to its use of a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack<\/a> from China\u2019s CATL. But\u00a0were it eligible, it would start from $35,495 (\u00a328,000) in the US \u2013 less than the combustion-engined Explorer (unrelated to the electric Explorer<\/a> arriving in the UK later this year), Edge<\/a> or Bronco<\/a> SUVs.<\/p>\n

Farley noted that Tesla \u201cfound this out first\u201d, nodding to the immense popularity of the Model 3<\/a> and Model Y<\/a>. The Model Y was the world\u2019s best-selling car in 2023<\/a>, according to figures published by industry analyst Jato Dynamics. It starts from $32,890 (\u00a326,000), including the Inflation Reduction Act credit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learned very quickly, and I want to say that no one will be immune to this reality,\u201d said Farley.<\/p>\n

In the UK, Ford currently sells only one electric car \u2013 the Mach-E. However, it will soon follow that with the new Explorer, as well as a new Capri<\/a> and the electric Puma (now confirmed to be called Gen-E<\/a>).<\/p>\n
