It was a small, meaningless decision that all of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/\">Boston Celtics<\/a> Nation noticed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8WJD6h\">\u201cJT said he wanted to wear a headband, so I said, \u2018I\u2019ll ride with you,\u2019\u201d White told Abby Chin of NBC Sports Boston at halftime.<\/p>\n<p id=\"IU6yXd\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/\">Celtics<\/a> absolutely clobbered the Nets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2024\/2\/14\/24073445\/celtics-propel-into-the-break-with-biggest-blowout-of-season-over-nets-136-86-boston-brooklyn\">earning a 136-86 victory<\/a> and heading into the All-Star break on a high note. Boston was having fun.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Ijmqcg\">But it\u2019s easy to have fun during a blowout.<\/p>\n<p id=\"owlnve\">At 43-12, the Celtics own the best record in the league with a 4.5-game cushion between them and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canishoopus.com\/\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a>. They\u2019ve been the top dogs in the NBA, but that\u2019s expected of them. Greatness comes with the territory in Boston, and anything less is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8v9cQ7\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2024\/1\/31\/24056597\/boston-celtics-joe-mazzulla-mentality-mindset-pacers-pelicans-kristaps-porzingis-derrick-white\">Mentality has been at the forefront<\/a> of Boston\u2019s success. Focusing on the day-to-day rather than the season at large has helped the Celtics maintain their focus. But having fun is just as crucial.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fhD1p0\">\u201cI think that it\u2019s a concept that I think is important,\u201d Joe Mazzulla said on Wednesday night. \u201cSometimes fun can be looked at as a distraction, but I think the ability to have fun and build togetherness and compete at a high, high level is important for the guys.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9ZEgrP\">\u201cAnd so, it builds a level of connection. The Wizards have won nine games this season.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yeQYxT\">Washington was running in transition as Boston lagged behind, clearly out of sorts just a few games prior to the All-Star break. With no rhythm and no defensive pressure, Mazzulla took it upon himself to ignite a spark.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0skVVg\">He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/2024\/2\/10\/24068292\/boston-celtics-washington-wizards-133-129-all-star-break-joe-mazzulla-jaylen-brown-jayson-tatum\">did his best stand-up routine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"gE164i\">\u201cI told a couple of jokes in the third quarter,\u201d Mazzulla said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"iLh0FI\">Down by eight points to one of the bottom-feeders of the East, Mazzulla tried to make his team laugh. By the end of the third quarter, the Celtics flipped an eight-point deficit into a 13-point lead, coasting through the fourth quarter despite a late Wizards run.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7Y1bAj\">They won a game that could have gone sideways in the blink of an eye, and it all stemmed from their ability to play freely. Rather than focusing on the score and pressure that comes with being the Celtics, they tried to have fun.<\/p>\n<p id=\"z1AAXc\">\u201cWhenever we\u2019re not maybe like just running through the other team, we\u2019re almost like, \u2018Ugh, like, this is closed, like, this is a game.\u2019 We\u2019re kind of like, our energy is a little bit down,\u201d Kristaps Porzingis said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mix8nf\">\u201cI think, in that moment, it made sense for us to be like, \u2018Yo, this is basketball. We\u2019re not going to be perfect every game. From toddlers playing on baby Nerf hoops to shooting around in your backyard pretending to hit a buzzer-beater (and magically resetting the shot clock when you miss).<\/p>\n<p id=\"tZbi99\">Even in the NBA, where people are paid millions to don an organization\u2019s colors and help them compete for a title, it\u2019s all just a game. And it\u2019s meant to be fun.<\/p>\n<p id=\"XWrOul\">\u201cYeah, I mean, obviously we\u2019re all locked in, and we know what the big goal is, but I mean, it is a game,\u201d Derrick White explained. \u201cSomething that we\u2019ve done since we were little kids. And I think, for most people, you play better when you\u2019re having fun. Competing, but having fun with it. So, that\u2019s always a good reminder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"Sk5lTr\">Boston fans are some of the most critical in sports, and it\u2019s because they care. They want nothing more than to see their favorite team succeed. But at the end of the day, players are human. Perfection is an impossibility, and happiness should not be exclusive to blowouts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"LkRQnd\">\u201cI mean, 82 games is a lot of games,\u201d White said. \u201cThat\u2019s not even including the playoffs, especially if you go deep. So, if you don\u2019t have fun with it, you\u2019re not enjoying it, you\u2019re not bringing that joy to the game, it\u2019s going to be a long season for you. <\/p>\n<p id=\"CeXX9X\">\u201cSo, obviously, there are going to be ups and downs. You\u2019re playing well, you\u2019re making shots, and that\u2019s easy to have fun [with].
