Aptiv's decision to discontinue capital support for
\nMotional further accentuates the industry concerns around the
\nreturn on investment related to the commercialization of Level 4\/5
\nrobo-taxi business model.<\/em><\/h3>\n

Aptiv's CEO, Kevin Clark, stated during the company's
\nfourth-quarter earnings call that although Motional, its robo-taxi
\nventure with Hyundai Motor, continues to progress on its technology
\nroadmap, Aptiv is exploring alternatives to reduce its ownership
\ninterest. “The costs related to delivering the tech principally, in
\nand around hardware, really makes it challenging from an adoption
\nstandpoint in the mobility on-demand market,” Clark said.<\/p>\n

Motional was established in 2020 as a 50:50 joint venture (JV)
\nfocused on autonomous driving technology with each partner
\ninvesting $2 billion. Its roots trace back to nuTonomy, founded in
\n2013 by Karl Iagnemma and Emilio Frazzoli in Boston. NuTonomy
\nrapidly gained recognition for successfully testing autonomous
\nvehicle technology on public roads.<\/p>\n

In 2017, Delphi acquired nuTonomy for a substantial $450
\nmillion. As Delphi later underwent a strategic split, its focus on
\nadvanced electronic systems, safety technology, and autonomous
\nvehicle hardware and software crystallized into Aptiv. NuTonomy
\nseamlessly integrated into Aptiv.<\/p>\n

Collaborating with Hyundai Motor, Motional unveiled plans to
\nco-develop production-ready autonomous versions of the Hyundai
\nIoniq 5, earmarked for deployment in a robo-taxi service slated for
\nlaunch this year. The Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in
\nSingapore emerged as a pivotal hub for advancing this
\ninitiative.<\/p>\n

Motional's geographical footprint extends across key cities
\nworldwide, including Boston, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and
\nSingapore, where rigorous testing regimes validate the robustness
\nand safety of its technology. Notably, Motional established
\nautonomous delivery services in partnership with Uber Eats in Los
\nAngeles. Motional also announced its plans during CES 2024 to
\ncollaborate with Kia on developing next-generation vehicles primed
\nfor commercial deployment later this decade.<\/p>\n

Motional's robo-taxi service ambition now depends on
\nHyundai<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aptiv's decision was positioned as a strategic maneuver rather
\nthan a sign of skepticism toward Level 4 mobility-as-a-service
\n(MaaS) technologies, but it is impossible to fully separate the two
\nsentiments. From this perspective, Aptiv will be reallocating
\nresources to support its impressive near-term growth in advanced
\ndriver assistance systems and automated driving of which it is a
\nconventional technology supplier. This shift bolsters the company's
\nrevenues while allowing Aptiv to mitigate the risk associated with
\ncontinued investment in a technology with uncertain
\nreturn-on-investment (ROI) timelines.<\/p>\n

Another perspective speculates that Hyundai may choose to
\ncontinue funding and developing autonomous technologies, without
\nthe involvement of Aptiv. One aspect supporting Hyundai's potential
\nindependent funding and development is the significant role of
\noriginal equipment manufacturers (OEM) in the mobility landscape.
\nOEMs serve as the primary point of contact and engagement with
\ncustomers, whether in traditional vehicle ownership or the emerging
\nmarket of autonomous MaaS similar to Uber or Didi. Given their
\nclose relationship with consumers, OEMs have a vested interest in
\nadvancing autonomous technologies to meet evolving consumer demands
\nfor mobility solutions \u2014 and Hyundai has shown its desire to be
\nviewed as a high-tech brand active in new technologies.<\/p>\n

Is there new competition within Hyundai Motor Group in
\nits 42dot acquisition?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Either way, with Aptiv stepping back, Hyundai-Kia Motor Group
\nwill be considering the future of the Motional JV. It may choose to
\nshut down the JV entirely, which would imply a lack of certainty
\nsurrounding the viability of Level 4 MaaS technologies \u2014 or at
\nleast a markedly similar interpretation to Aptiv on ROI timelines.
\nThe potential decision to close the JV could stem from various
\nfactors, including bolstering its financial strength or realigning
\nits strategic priorities; however, it may simply need to focus on
\nother nearer-term challenges (such as the late-2023 delayed launch
\nof its Level 3 features).<\/p>\n

However, the Level 3 delay brings another interesting angle.
\nJust three years after Aptiv acquired nuTonomy, Hyundai acquired
\n42dot in 2023 for $328 million with Hyundai and Kia holding stakes.
\nIn November 2023, Hyundai postponed its launch of the Level 3
\nHighway Driving Pilot. Just a month later, Hyundai consolidated its
\nelectronics, infotainment and autonomous driving efforts under
\n42dot in a push to advance its software-defined vehicle initiatives
\nin a software-focused reorganization.<\/p>\n

The influence of startup 42dot will play a larger role within
\nHyundai's core business, starting with advancements in
\nelectrical\/electronic architectures, crucial for the redevelopment
\nof its Level 3 technology. This raises a question \u2014 will
\nMotional continue to influence Hyundai's Level 4 ambitions, or will
\n42dot take on this responsibility? This does not necessarily
\nsignify the end for Motional, as it could potentially be retained
\nas a US subsidiary (given the relatively high prospects for
\nrobo-taxis) or as the consumer-facing mobility brand in the US
\nmarket. However, if Hyundai maintains its Level 4 ambitions, it
\ncould lead to a significant shift in the organizational structure
\nand positioning of its product\/expertise.<\/p>\n

These alternative viewpoints highlight the complexity and
\ndynamism of the autonomous vehicle industry and the uncertainty of
\nthe robo-taxi business model to operate sustainably and profitably.
\nThis is causing stakeholders to weigh their long-term ambitions
\nagainst competing priorities, including short-term profitability as
\nwell as midterm growth of core business units that should make
\ntheir future positions even stronger \u2014 presumably to be ready
\nif and when Level 4 MaaS is ready for prime time, provided there is
\nstill market share to be captured.<\/p>\n
