Audi<\/a> is in an \u201cintense concept phase\u201d for the electric successor to the TT<\/a>, experimenting with different silhouettes and soundtracks as it plots a replacement for the popular sports coup\u00e9, which retired last year.<\/p>\n

Set to be introduced \u201cwithin five or 10 years\u201d, the new electric car\u00a0<\/a>will take a different name from the TT but occupy a similar position in the German firm\u2019s range.<\/p>\n

Audi\u2019s spokesperson for technical development, Daniel Schuster, told Autocar: \u201cWe are taking a blank sheet of paper to see what is the right \u2018icon\u2019. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about looking at what we have now and saying \u2018it\u2019d be cool to make it electric\u2019. It\u2019s really about what would be a great addition to the range.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schuster said it is important for Audi to continue to differentiate between regular and RS cars but added there has to be an \u201cicon on top\u201d. Rolf Michl, Audi Sport\u2019s managing director, said developing the successor is a \u201chuge job\u201d for the company because it \u201cdidn\u2019t want to lose existing customers\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t just orientate myself on sizes, concepts, designs. You have to have a base portfolio that has to be sorted out very well. And then the car has to fit to this portfolio and to the Audi brand. This is quite a unique job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schuster stopped short of describing what the new car could look like but promised that it \u201cwould not just be a replacement\u201d for the TT. He said Audi\u2019s approach will not be to \u201ctake the engine out, put an electric motor in and you have a TT with an electric engine\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt will be different, but emotional.\u201d While Audi will work to strengthen and highlight the \u201cemotional\u201d appeal of such a car, Michl confirmed it will not try to emulate the five-cylinder soundtrack of the top-drawer TT RS flagship.<\/p>\n

Michl said: \u201cWe won\u2019t use the five-cylinder sound for it because the TT was a unique concept that fitted perfectly in that time. Therefore, we have to find another thing for the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, we had some prototypes where we reproduced the fivecylinder sound and it didn\u2019t fit at all. So it has to be an orientation to the customer but it has really to be specific. Silent is the new loud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Head of technical development Steffen Bamberger said it is \u201ctoo complicated\u201d to recreate the nuances of a combustion engine for an EV. Instead, the firm has invested \u201ca lot of money\u201d in alternative interior and exterior sounds.<\/p>\n

The new EV will also be differentiated from the TT by a \u201cmuch wider\u201d spread of driving behaviours, said Michl, but dynamic agility will remain key: \u201cYou will be surprised. For us, the RS DNA has to be reflected. It is not better or worse. It is just different.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
