T<\/span><\/span>o cap off Utah State Ath<\/span><\/span>letics\u2019 recognition of the <\/span><\/span>50th anniversary of Title <\/span><\/span>IX, USU will feature a \u201cCelebration <\/span><\/span>of Women In Sport\u201d gala and the <\/span><\/span>annual Hall of Fame induction <\/span><\/span>ceremony as part of the 2023 Hall <\/span><\/span>of Fame Weekend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s an important weekend for us to make <\/span><\/span>sure we’re recognizing and educating folks <\/span><\/span>on women’s athletics,\u201d said Ryan McLane, <\/span><\/span>an associate athletics director and devel<\/span><\/span>opment officer for USU Athletics. \u201cIt was a <\/span><\/span>much different path for women.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The gala, held on April 14 at 5:30 p.m. in <\/span><\/span>the Riverwoods Conference Center, will fea<\/span><\/span>ture dinner, a silent auction, speakers and <\/span><\/span>two panels. USU President Noelle Cockett <\/span><\/span>and interim athletics director Jerry Bovee <\/span><\/span>will address the audience along with guest <\/span><\/span>speaker Tessa White, a member of the USU <\/span><\/span>Board of Trustees who is married to former Aggie <\/span><\/span>quarterback Kevin White.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A historic panel will feature former Aggie athletes <\/span><\/span>Emily Call Williams, Marilyn Weiss, Cindy Stuart <\/span><\/span>and Diann Darnall.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There will also be a modern panel with current <\/span><\/span>female USU student-athletes. <\/span><\/span>USU Athletics hopes to establish the Women\u2019s <\/span><\/span>Excellence Endowment for women\u2019s sports at Utah <\/span><\/span>State with proceeds from the event. Currently, only <\/span><\/span>USU Gymnastics has an endowment for the team\u2019s <\/span><\/span>budget. That\u2019s a gap USU Athletics is trying to close.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don’t have just a general women’s athletic <\/span><\/span>program endowment set up at this point,\u201d McLane <\/span><\/span>said. \u201cWe felt like this was a great opportunity to <\/span><\/span>get that established and to grow it and our women’s <\/span><\/span>programs and that in that manner.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They need to make at least $25,000 to establish <\/span><\/span>the fund. McLane said endowments are important <\/span><\/span>for the Aggies because they establish future funds in <\/span><\/span>perpetuity as USU Athletics distributes money made <\/span><\/span>on interest from the original fund.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s a huge investment we have that we have <\/span><\/span>those funds forever moving forward, and then they <\/span><\/span>can continue to grow,\u201d McLane said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

USU women\u2019s teams would be able to utilize the <\/span><\/span>money to help with everything from in-season travel <\/span><\/span>expenses to team bonding outings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take <\/span><\/span>place on April 15 at 7 p.m. The event will be held in <\/span><\/span>the Russell\/Wanlass Performance Hall, which houses <\/span><\/span>421 seats, instead of the Daines Concert Hall, where <\/span><\/span>the ceremony was held last year, which can hold <\/span><\/span>more than 1,700.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s induction will feature the first all-fe<\/span><\/span>male class in Utah State history, consisting of Tana <\/span><\/span>Call Davis (Gymnastics 1987-1990), Shantel Flanary <\/span><\/span>(Soccer 2008-2011), Krista Larson Du Plessis (Track <\/span><\/span>and Field 2006-2009), Jerrie McGahan (Women\u2019s <\/span><\/span>Basketball 1977-1980), Denae Mohlman Pruden <\/span><\/span>(Volleyball 1997-2000), Christine Thomsen (Softball <\/span><\/span>2012-2013) and Weiss, who was director of wom<\/span><\/span>en\u2019s athletics while also coaching women\u2019s basket<\/span><\/span>ball, volleyball and track and field from 1975-1981.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are excited to celebrate and memorialize the <\/span><\/span>successes of this group of inductees,” Bovee said in <\/span><\/span>a statement. \u201cThese women are pioneers and role <\/span><\/span>models, and they have helped pave the way for the <\/span><\/span>opportunities afforded our current student-athletes. <\/span><\/span>We salute and honor the legacy these women have <\/span><\/span>left at Utah State and beyond.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This will be the 20th class to enter the Utah State <\/span><\/span>Athletics Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
