Italy January 2024: Dacia hits record 2nd place, Jeep Avenger at #4

Dacia is only outsold by Fiat in January.

The Italian new car market is up 10.6% year-on-year in January to 141,946 units according to UNRAE. Private sales are up 10.2% to 88,083 and 61.1% share vs. 61.5% a year ago, self registrations are down -5% to 11,357 and 7.9% share vs. 9.2%, long term leases edge up 4.8% to 30,406 and 21.1% share vs. 22.3% and short term rentals surge a whopping 306.7% to 6,170 and 4.3% share vs. 1.2% in January 2023. The segmentation by powertrain shows a surprising decline of rechargeable segments: BEVs are down -10.8% to 2,984 and just 2.1% share vs. 2.6% a year ago, PHEVs sink -33.1% to 4.105 and 2.8% share vs. 4.7%. Meanwhile HEVs are up 14.8% to 54,752 and 38% share vs. 36.7% including 15,184 full hybrids (+20.4%) and 39,568 mild hybrids (+12.7%). Petrol is up 27.2% to 43,681 and 30.3% share vs. 26.4%, diesel is down -8% to 22,755 and 15.8% share vs. 19% and LPG is up 16.5% to 15,598 and 10.8% share vs. 10.3%.

In the brands ranking, after a shock 2nd place in December below Volkswagen, Fiat (-11.4%) reclaims the top spot with 11.2% share, at the same level as over the Full Year 2023. Dacia (+19%) is up 9 spots on December to hit a record 2nd place with 7.3% share, its previous best being #3 reached in September 2021 and July 2023. Toyota (+9.6%) is up one rank to #3 while Volkswagen (-14.7%) drops to #4. Peugeot (+59%), Audi (+41.3%), BMW (+41.2%) and Citroen (+40.2%) also impress whereas Ford (-4%) is down five spots to #10 and Renault (-15.6%) down eight to #11. Below, notice MG (+103.9%), DR Motor (+96.3%), Nissan (+59.5%), Opel (+52.4%) and Suzuki (+43.6%).

Model-wise, the Fiat Panda (+4.4%) is faithful to its pole position with a strong 7.9% share vs. 6.6% over the Full Year 2023. The Dacia Sandero (+61.5%) returns to the 2nd place with 4.7% of the market vs. 3.1% over FY2023, its is followed by the Citroen C3 (+133.8%) and the new Jeep Avenger is up to a record #4, also hit last October and November. The Lancia Ypsilon (+9.2%) is pushed down to #5 ahead of the Toyota Yaris Cross (+30%) and Peugeot 2008 (+111.2%). The Peugeot 208 (+132.1%) and Ford Puma (+57%) also make themselves noticed below.
