Memphis Grizzlies point guard Derrick Rose told Ja Morant that he is not on the team to babysit him. Morant was suspended by the NBA for the first 25 games of this season for showing a gun on an IG Live video.
Even though the Grizzlies signed Rose and acquired Marcus Smart from the Boston Celtics to help mentor Morant, Rose doesn’t believe Morant needs to be micro-managed.
Rose reached out to Morant and Tee Morant about possibly joining the Grizzlies. Rose, who played his college basketball at Memphis, signed a two-year, $6.5 million deal with the Grizzlies.

Morant can learn a thing or two from Rose, who was the most athletic point guard in the NBA before tearing his ACL in the 2012 playoffs. During the 2010-11 season, Rose became the youngest MVP in NBA history with his hometown Chicago Bulls. He averaged 25.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists and led Chicago to the best record in the league.
Rose has career averages of 17.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists with the Bulls, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons. He has undergone four knee surgeries and two ankle surgeries since winning the MVP Award in 2011.
Morant averaged 26.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 8.1 assists last season for the Grizzlies, who lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2023 playoffs in six games. Memphis hasn’t gotten past the second round of the playoffs in the Morant era, which began in 2019-20.

It’s unknown if Rose will start for the Grizzlies while Morant is out. Rose appeared in 26 games in 2021-22 before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery and only 27 games last season. He was removed from the Knicks’ playing rotation in early December. Rose, who turns 35 in October, averaged a career-low 5.6 points in 2022-23, but the former MVP believes he still has a lot left in the tank.
