The UConn men’s basketball season is now less than four weeks away, and the excitement is palpable both in Storrs and on social media.
The Huskies will enter the season as defending national champs for the first time since the 2014-15 season, and expectations are high for a group that returns such key players as Tristen Newton, Donovan Clingan and Alex Karaban, and brings in prized freshman recruit Stephon Castle as well as Rutgers transfer Cam Spencer.
It’s likely that UConn will enter the season as a top-10 team, and although the first Top 25 rankings aren’t out yet, ESPN’s Bracketology has laid out its preseason prediction for the Huskies.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has UConn in as a No. 2 seed in the East Region, facing off with 15th-seeded Colgate in Brooklyn in the first round.
This year’s East Regional Semifinals and Final will be played in Boston, so if Joey Brackets proves to be prophetic with his preseason prediction, a lot of UConn fans will be happy. Huskies fans would have the chance to turn TD Garden into Storrs North for a weekend.
Lunardi tabbed Michigan State as the No. 1 seed in the region, and has UConn potentially matching up with No. 3 Gonzaga for a second straight year, this time in the Sweet 16. Duke, Kansas and Purdue are the other 1-seeds.
There’s still a long way to go, but you’ve got to start somewhere. If this group feels snubbed by the fact that it didn’t land a No. 1 seed, that could serve as some preseason motivation. UConn hasn’t earned a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
UConn will officially kick off the season at First Night on Friday. The Huskies’ first game is Nov. 6, against Northern Arizona at Gampel Pavilion.
