Look at the Orlando Magic. It’s beginning to feel like they have too many talented young point guards. This team extended Cole Anthony over the summer.
Markelle Fultz has been injured recently, and Anthony Black has played well in his absence. Meanwhile, Jalen Suggs has been starting out of position just to find a place in the rotation.
In all likelihood, the Magic will have to move one of them eventually. This team needs to diversify its roster. Could they start by sending Fultz to the San Antonio Spurs?

After all, it’s not typical to net a clearcut franchise player right away. Often, it takes a few drafts. Players bust. Other times, they aren’t on that level. Finding a franchise player is exceedingly difficult. It took the Magic some time to finally land on Paolo Banchero.

With that in mind, the Spurs got tremendously lucky this summer. They barely started rebuilding before they netted Victor Wembanyama. This is an exceedingly rare stroke of fortune.
Should the Spurs follow up by acquiring another former number-one pick in Fultz?
Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
The Spurs need a point guard. That much is obvious. Trae Jones is a solid rotation player, but he’s not a long-term starter. Eventually,, the Spurs will need to upgrade at that position.
Why not Fultz? He’s a dynamic playmaker with solid floor vision. Fultz can generate rim pressure in half-court sets. This could be exactly the type of point guard that the Spurs want alongside Victor Wembanyama. Meanwhile, at 254, Fultz has room to grow with San Antonio’s franchise player.
This deal may not make San Antonio better now – they’ll miss McDermott’s elite shooting. That’s fine. The Spurs can play the odds in the lottery next summer and potentially replace McDermott.

More broadly, they’re landing a key player to move forward with at the expense of a player who will be easier to replace. Should the Magic give that player up?
Why The Orlando Magic Do The Deal
The Spurs just started their rebuild. By contrast, the Magic are nearing the end of theirs. This team is looking to take a step forward this season. What do they need in order to do that?
Shooting. So, that’s what we’ve got them landing here. This isn’t complicated. The Magic have too many point guards, and they don’t have enough shooting. Flipping Fultz for McDermott makes enough sense with those factors in mind.

Of course, Fultz is much younger. He’s got more trade value than McDermott. That’s why Orlando is also landing an unprotected first-rounder here. That should be enough for them to move on from Fultz – after all, they’ll be solving a problem in the process.
