Hyundai’s Tucson is about to undergo the Bharat NCAP crash tests, marking a significant step in the company’s commitment to safety. In October, Hyundai voluntarily sent three of its models for crash testing to Bharat NCAP, with the Tucson being the first in line. This news comes amid the growing emphasis on car safety in India.
The Tucson is a flagship SUV from Hyundai, and it’s expected to set the safety standards high. It’s equipped with six airbags as standard and features Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on its top-spec variant. These safety features are crucial for achieving high crash test ratings.

Hyundai has a reputation for producing cars with good safety features, and the Tucson is no exception. The Euro NCAP and Latin NCAP crash tests conducted in 2021 and 2022 respectively have already demonstrated the vehicle’s safety prowess. It received a 5-star rating in Euro NCAP and 3 stars in Latin NCAP, showcasing its robust safety performance.
While the two NCAP organizations have slightly different testing protocols and scoring systems, both recognized the stability of the Tucson’s body shell and footwell area, thanks to the standard six airbags. Additionally, the Tucson has excelled in side pole impact tests and offers advanced safety assist systems, including lane assist and autonomous emergency braking.
For the India-spec Tucson, which includes six airbags, ABS, ESC, three-point seat belts, and seatbelt reminders as standard, Hyundai is determined to achieve a full 5-star rating from Bharat NCAP. This is a significant move by Hyundai, given that their models have previously not secured more than 3 stars under Global NCAP protocols, until the Verna achieved a 5-star rating.
The Tucson’s crash test will be followed by the Exter, another Hyundai model. The Exter also comes with all the essential safety features as standard, except for Electronic Stability Control (ESC). These comprehensive safety features are a testament to Hyundai’s commitment to enhancing safety standards in their cars.
The Bharat NCAP protocol was initially scheduled to begin on October 1, but it faced a slight delay due to challenges in securing units for crash testing amid supply constraints. Reports suggest that the crash testing is expected to start around mid-December, and the first test results can be anticipated by the end of the year or early next year. Hyundai’s proactive approach to safety testing, coupled with its commitment to equipping its vehicles with advanced safety features, aligns with the increasing awareness and importance of car safety in India. This move ensures that Hyundai’s vehicles continue to meet the evolving safety standards and expectations of Indian customers.
