These Two Unrestored Corvettes are Absolute Time Capsules

Whatever the manufacturer and model of choice is, every hardcore vintage car enthusiast appreciates an unrestored example and many strongly prefer well-cared for originals, complete with all of their imperfections, to perfectly restored ones. MCACN traditionally attracts some of the best unrestored cars in existence and this year is no exception. We picked out a couple of our favorite Corvettes to share with you.

1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

\u200b1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

This Marina Blue 1967 coupe is, by any measure one of the best unrestored C2s in existence. It is equipped with a number of highly desirable options, including L71 427/435 horsepower engine, M21 close-ratio 4-speed, 4.11:1 Positraction axle, F41 suspension, N36 telescopic steering column, U15 speed warning, N11 off road exhaust, K66 transistor ignition,Q81 red stripe tires, and U69 AM/FM radio. It was bought new by Keith Litavsky, who while serving with distinguished valor in Vietnam sent money home with instructions to save it for the Corvette he’d buy when he returned home. It would be his reward for surviving the horrors of that war. True to plan, upon returning to the US he went straight to Jack Douglas Chevrolet in Hinsdale, Illinois and bought the car he’d been dreaming about. In the ensuing years he cared for his cherished Corvette with meticulous precision and kept it in essentially new condition.

In April 1993 Mr. Litavsky passed away and two years later his Corvette went to the home of one of his sons. In honor of his father’s memory, the son continued to preserve the car with an incredible level of care. In 2017 the Litavsky family sold the car to its next caretaker. At the time it had travelled a total of 8,533 miles and retained every part it was born with except for the battery and mufflers. It also is still accompanied by its original paperwork, including the window sticker, Protect-O-Plate and car shipper. It’s original tank sticker is still on the tank. Today it is as close to a new as a 57 year old car can be, a virtual window back through time that is an absolute joy to experience.

Original radiator cap looks nearly new. The paint finishes on the radiator, radiator support, fan shroud and other nearby components show the subtle variations in gloss that these originally had.

Unrestored steering box retains its original finish and yellow inspection mark.

In 1967 Chevrolet produced 3,754 Corvettes with the L71 tri-power 427/435 horsepower option and this is almost the best unrestored example in existence.Chrome-plated triangular air cleaner was used on all tri-power big blocks in 1967. The only component in this engine compartment that is not original to the car is the battery.

Original door panels almost always have cracks and some separation or bubbling in the vinyl around the armrests but this car’s panels still look new.

Every part under the hood is original to this car, including the hoses and belts.

The indicated mileage – 8,555 – is accurate. Note the speedometers yellow needle and knob just below the center, both of which are part of “Speed Warning Indicator”, a $10.55 option that went into 2,108 Corvettes in 1967.

Blue vinyl interior is completely original and in remarkably good condition. Original vinyl seat upholstery still looks new but is exhibiting some looseness in areas, likely due to deterioration of the underlying foam cushions.

Switches beneath the shift pattern plate are for optional power windows. Carpeting and trim items are all original and still look fantastic.

This unrestored engine compartment offers a wealth of information to those interested in factory originality. Note the heavy texture in the upper radiator hose, remnants of orange paint remaining on the exhaust manifold, and roughness of the fiberglass inner wheel housings.

1970 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

This Donnybrooke Green 1970 coupe was bought new by Maryland resident Robert Ryan from Sherwood Chevrolet in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. It was built in March 1970 at the Chevrolet St. Louis assembly plant and came equipped with an LS5 454/390 horsepower engine, M21 close-ratio 4-speed, GV3 3.08:1 Positraction axle, PU9 white letter tires, and U69 AM/FM radio. Mr. Ryan drove the car sparingly and extremely carefully with the goal of keeping it in pristine condition indefinitely.

The second owner bought this Corvette in 1976 and rarely drove it, taking care to store it properly and starting the engine regularly to keep it in good operating condition. The third owner purchased the car in 2018 and went to great lengths to preserve its originality. Today the odometer reads 8,950 miles and the car still retains its original paint and interior, as well as original chassis and underhood components. Its originality and condition earned the car notable honors this year, including an NCRS Top Flight award, NCRS 4-Star Bowtie Award, Bloomington Gold Certification, and Bloomington Gold Survivor Certification. The combination of Gold and Survivor Certification also earned a Bloomington Gold Benchmark Award.

Engine data plate at the bottom of the shifter console reminds the driver that he’s got 390 horsepower under the hood from a 454 cid engine. Owing primarily to reduced compression to accommodate the coming switch to unleaded gas, horsepower figures for the big block dropped steadily after 1970.

This 1970 coupe, one of 10,668 produced that year, has travelled only 8,950 miles and remains almost completely original. The 1970 LS5 454 engine was equipped with hydraulic lifters and got a modest 5,600 rpm redline. The indicated mileage of 8,950 breaks down to only about 165.7 miles per year.

This unrestored coupe came with very few options but like 16,990 other 1970 Corvettes it did get an AM/FM radio, which cost a stout $172.75. For another $105.35 buyers could have an AM/FM stereo.

4,473 of the 17,316 Corvettes assembled in 1970 were fitted with an LS5 454 cid engine, which was a $289.65 option.

Though cosmetically deteriorated in places, this unrestored engine compartment ably illustrates the many different paint and plating finishes utilized in 1970.

This car’s original standard vinyl covered door panels, which were dressed up with basket-weave center insert surrounded by stitching and bright trim and hardware, remain in excellent condition.

Standard black vinyl interior is completely original and in remarkable condition.
