In past seasons TenSura has overindulged in “standing around talking” episodes that serve exclusively as setup. Here we get perhaps the most egregious one yet, and to be honest, it’s a bit of a slog to sit through. We start with the gaudy Clown crew, Yuuki, and Kagali agreeing to mostly sit tight in the fact of the threat from Rimuru, though Yuuki does want to at least say something to stir things up.
We have Sakaguchi Hinata meeting with her boss Luminous Valentine in Ruberios, and they too ultimately land on not openly opposing Rimuru, who is after all a Demon Lord with Storm Dragon Veldora on his side. Even though Hinata is sore about losing to him and wants a rematch, Luminous urges caution.
I wish I better understood why exactly they have to regard Rimuru as an adversary rather than a friend. I guess they simply fear him gaining too much power and stepping on their own plans for world domination. At least they seem to understand that Rimuru isn’t one to be trifled with.
Finally we have the king of Fulmuth announcing to his council that he’ll be signing an armistice with Tempest, abdicating his throne, and allowing his brother Edward to succeed him. While Edward feigns distress, he hides a smirk that suggests he always wanted the big chair, and now it’s fallen into his lap. That said, if he thinks the kingdom can afford to try any funny business with Tempest, he’s got another thing coming.
While I understand the need to establish all of the various geopolitical dynamics in a post Demon Lord Rimuru world, I can’t help but feel like it could have been done more elegantly than an episode consisting entirely of exposition. I also think that even fifty episodes in, this show would be better off with at least 50% fewer characters!
