When we last saw 2B, evolved super-MLs Adam and Eve had been defeated, and while she had to kill an virus-infected 9S, his consciousness was trasferred to the ML network. Additionally, we saw 9S get all up into some top-secret stuff in the Bunker. Now 2B and a humanoid 9S are back to their routine scouting missions … or are they?
Things are a little off in subtle ways. 2B calls 9S “Nines” suggesting time has passed and their relationship has grown, yet 9S doesn’t remember visiting the city ruins, suggesting a flashback. We then have a red-haired and red-hooded “resistance” member who asks the pair to find her lost friend, but she has limited info due to memory faults.
Turns out she’s actually a “Type E”—an YoRHa execution model, designed to take out android deserters and moles—and she killed her own “friend” but forgot she did it. Wracked by guilt, she throws herself off the high-rise building, and 9S isn’t able to save her. A couple more seemingly innocuous missions take place, but with the added weirdness of 2B suddenly attacking 9S, though notably not being that happy about having to do it.
We learn back up at the Bunker that 2B has always been 2E, and apparently her mission was to follow 9S on missions and execute him if he learns too much. And he always learns too much, so while he befriends 2E again and again and she grows more fond of him, she’s had to kill what amounts to her best and only friend countless times due to YoRHa orders.
But Commander White suggests this cycle is about to end, and that a final battle is about to take place that will end the centuries-long stalemate between the androids humanity left behind and the alien MLs. It appears that battle will be fought with less-human-looking android soldiers.
The bleakness of the fallen earth (along with the knowledge there’s nothing left of actual humanity except for the androids) is still tinged with lighthearted comic relief from 9S, along with the usual awe-inspiring vistas and atmospheric soundtrack. And yes, the puppet omake are back and as silly as ever. NieR doesn’t make it easy for a non-game player like me to understand what’s going on, but at least it looks and sounds great doing it.
